NC Film: So what exactly is a “sunset?”

SUNSETQUESTION:  Everyone is talking about a sunset when it comes to the film incentives.  What exactly is a “sunset?”

ANSWER:  Another very popular question.  It’s basically a metaphor for when our film incentives expire.  So, when someone says, “Our NC Film incentives will sunset January 1, 2015,” that means that they will go away on that date unless our legislators vote otherwise.  This is a very dangerous and confusing way of doing business with production companies. Currently, unlike other states, we don’t have a film incentive permanently in place, our Reps just keep extending them every couple of years.  That means every couple years they are in danger of going away.  Production companies found our method to be unstable, and so they would rather do business with states that have something permanently in place.

You see, when these production companies look at states to film their movie or TV show, they can look as far as two years in advance.  So, for example, if Warner Brothers is looking at North Carolina today, and they wanted to begin shooting a movie in the summer of 2015, they would see that currently our film incentives are at risk of expiring six months before their start up date, so they wouldn’t bother even looking at us at all.

There is a BIG vote on our incentives in May 2014, and what we are pushing for is to do away with the “sunset” for good, and keep our incentives indefinitely.  That will be a game changer and we will see a hell of a lot more business here in our state!

NC vs GA Film Incentives Made Simple

NCvsGAThere are a lot of people out there that don’t know the difference between states who offer “credits” and those who offer “rebates.”  No worries.  Sometimes things aren’t explained to us in the simplest of forms.  I know I need things to be explained to me like you are talking to a five year old to actually get it myself!  So, here ya go and lemme know if you understand it clearly enough!  Of course this is very general and a lot goes into both programs, but this is what it is, in its most simplest form.  Post your comments below!

Let’s say you are from California and you decided to go shopping at a lovely unique boutique called Georgia.  You are pleased with what they have and you spend $100 at the store.  The clerk says, “Hello there!  Here is a $30 in-store credit to our store for your next purchase.  You have up to five years to use it.  Thank you for shopping at our lovely boutique.”  Well, that is very nice, however, you are not planning to come back to Georgia any time soon, but you sure would love to have at least some of that $30, right?  So, you think of your friends and colleagues who might find their way to Georgia.  Perhaps maybe one of them would love to use that in-store credit.  You got really lucky and found someone that agreed to buy it from you for 85 cents on the dollar.  So now you’ve got about $25 in your pocket.

Now there is another fabulous boutique store called North Carolina.  Being from California, you are again pleased with this store, finding exactly what you are looking for and you pay the clerk $100.  The clerk says, “Thank you for spending $100 in my store.  Here is $25 back. We hope you come back soon.”  End of story.

The NC Film incentives are simple and easy.  No hoops to jump through.  That’s one HUGE reason why production companies love filming here.  So, let’s continue to fight to keep our 25% film incentives.  Visit KeepNCFilm.org

shane coffeyIf you remember I told you about a USA pilot that would be shooting here in NC. Well, my suspicions are now solidly confirmed.  Moving across the state, that pilot is indeed the drama The Novice.  It’s from Fox 21, who also does Homeland.  They will be filming in Charlotte and the surrounding areas.  They begin production in a couple of weeks. Shane Coffey has landed the lead. He is best known for his role as Holden Strauss in ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars.  Written by Hell On Wheels creators Joe and Tony Gayton.  According to Deadline.com:

The Novice centers on Kyle (Coffey), a charming and highly intelligent recent college graduate who is forced to move back home with his parents and siblings when his job search stalls. However, after a strange quirk of fate proves oddly fortuitous, he lands a position with a Korean crime organization.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 11/21/2013 – Max Steel, Sleepy Hollow, and more.

Max-SteelHappy Thursday beautiful peeps!  I hope you are more rested than me!  Ha!  Let’s start with more details about Max Steel.  My sources have told me that the powers that be from Mattel Entertainment along with Open Road Films and Dolphin Films have been interviewing department-heads for this live action version of the Action SciFi TV series.    It’s looking like the budget will not exceed 20 million, more likely 10-15M.  Stewart Hendler will direct.  One of the two producers really caught my eye!  Julia Pistor.  JuliaPistorShe is a perfect fit for this find of flick as she has produced films such as The Spiderwick Chronicles, Charlott’s Web, Jimmy Neutron and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, just to name a few!  I REALLY want to meet her!  They are slated to open offices in the next 40-60 days.  We should be hearing an announcement very soon! The feature revolves around teenager Maxwell McGrath and alien companion Steel who can combine special turbo-energy powers to generate superhero, Max Steel.

SH_necromancerSleepy Hollow has been going back and forth trying to figure out when indeed they will be coming back to Wilmywood for Season 2.  At one point they were discussing a start as early as January, but now they are looking at April/May.

BCLuxeThe company BaseCamp Luxe is holding their ribbon cutting ceremony TODAY at Screen Gems.    Media will receive special viewing of the stylish and luxurious vintage airstream trailers for use on film and television production sets. THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 11/20/2013 Fincannons win Artios, Pieces of Talent, Sleepy Hollow location revealed

Atkinson (NC) High SchoolGood Morning Peeps!  Let’s kick it off with a Scribble to the Scribe!

QUESTION: WE are trying to figure out what building is being shown as the Tarrytown Mental Hospital where Abbie’s sister is?  It is driving us nuts. Looks like old Topsail High School, but we’re not sure. Didn’t know who else to ask!  Thanks, from the folks at Wilmington and Beaches CVB

ANSWER: Great question and a popular one.  The exterior of the old Atkinson High School has been transformed into the Tarrytown Mental Hospital. It is located in Atkinson, NC.  As for the interior, some of the interior is the old school, some is a set on stage like Jenny’s room, and some is the old Brunswick hospital.  On a historical note, the school was used from 1924-1975 as a high school and then finally a middle school. Today, the building is used  for  auctions each second Saturday; and rented out for special occasions and  movie production.

PiecesMore congratulations for our local boy Joe Stauffer’s Pieces of Talent.  The Horror now has a total of 17 awards. The film’s most recent win was at the New York City Horror Film Festival where they took home:
Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography (all Joe Stauffer), and Best Actress ( Barbara Weetman )

Check out the Full Award List NOW!   The film stars  David Long, Kristi Ray, Barbara Weetman, Nate Panning, Jon Stafford and Taylor Kowalski.

MORE ABOUT PIECES OF TALENT:
Charlotte (Kristi Ray) is an aspiring actress struggling to find her big break, but until she does, she can look forward to a future of waitressing and living with her pushy mother. Between being harassed at work and pestered at home, salvation seems farther and farther away – until she meets David (David Long). Rescuing David from an aggressive bouncer, Charlotte finds out her new friend makes movies for a living, and she immediately forms a connection with him. David of course takes kindly to the pretty woman’s newfound friendship, and decides he’d love to work with Charlotte on his next project. Charlotte has no idea what kind of filmmaker David is though, as we find out that starring in David’s movie can really be a career killer – zing!  Pieces of Talent is now available for pre-order on DVD.

SLEEPY HOLLOW RATINGS: Did the Necromancer Conjure up Viewers?

SH_necromancer

“What Sleepy Hollow lacked in zingers it made up for in breath-baiting tension.” ~Rose Maura Lorre, Vulture.com

Man, if Sleepy Hollow doesn’t win an Emmy for VSX, it will be a sad day!  The black minions blew me away!  Let’s see who else was glued to the TV last night.  The overnight numbers are in.  Last week, The Midnight Ride took  7 million viewers on a journey garnering a 2.6 (adjusted up a 1/10 from 2.5) rating.  The Necromancer (Episode 8) managed to maintain its 7 million viewers A18-49 with a 2.5 average.  As always, we still need to see if SH will adjust up or down later in the day. All in all, I would give Ichabod a fist bump for the ratings.  I will be updating this blog as more details come in.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 11/19/2013 We’re the Millers DVD, John Leonetti, Basecamp Luxe and more!

Good Tuesday Morning!  How about a fist bump for last night’s  Sleepy Hollow!  I will have the ratings report later today after 11am for the Necromancer.  The folks are shooting downtown at St. James Church on S. 3rd St.  Not too much sightseeing as they will be doing interiors today.

Gotta give some major kudos to DP John Leonetti.  He’s been working on Sleepy Hollow, but before that he was also DP on our smash hit supernatural flick, The Conjuring.  Now my sources have told me he has made the leap to director for The Conjuring 2!  Even though we are a tad sad it is not shooting here, congrats John!  Your crew members have deemed you one of the greatest guys to work with!

RUMORS FROM THE LOT: Mattel to bring Wilmywood a feature??

Max-Steel

A lovely RUMOR from the Lot.  My sources have just told me that we may be hearing an announcement soon about a big budget movie that has been shrouded in secrecy.  My sources tell that Mattel Entertainment could indeed be bringing us Max Steel.  The feature revolves around teenager Maxwell McGrath and alien companion Steel who can combine special turbo-energy powers to generate superhero, Max Steel.

As Mattel reboots its “Max Steel” franchise with a new line of toys and an animated TV series, the company also teamed up with Open Road Films picking up the project to release in theaters late next year. Dolphin Films, a production banner of Dolphin Entertainment, will produce the film.

We can chalk this up as rumor but we will find out soon enough because they are reported to open up offices in January 2014.

More to come.  Stay Tuned.
