Television Series Fuel Strong Year for Film Industry in North Carolina

5,700 production days, $254 million in spending and 25,000 job opportunities in 2013

DECEMBER 17, 2013 • JOBS AND THE ECONOMY

PRESS RELEASE:  Raleigh, N.C. — Popular television productions fueled one of the strongest years experienced by the film industry in North Carolina.

More than 60 productions registered with the N.C. Film Office and filmed in North Carolina in 2013. Those productions amassed a record-high of more than 5,700 production days with filming taking place in more than 30 of the state’s 100 counties.

“In addition to our state’s beauty, we’ve developed the workforce and artists that make North Carolina an ideal place to produce quality projects efficiently,” said Governor McCrory.

Year-end projections show television and film productions had a direct in-state spend in excess of $254 million and created more than 4,000 well-paying crew positions for the state’s highly skilled workforce. These productions created nearly 25,000 job opportunities (full time equivalent and temporary jobs), including talent and background extra positions, for North Carolinians. These numbers are the second highest in the industry’s history for in-state spending by productions as well as total job opportunities created.

Television series headlined production in North Carolina in 2013. Five major series—the summer’s top show “Under The Dome,” this fall’s breakout series “Sleepy Hollow,” the second season of Cinemax’s top series “Banshee,” the third season of the award winning Showtime series “Homeland” and the final season of HBO’s “Eastbound and Down”—all filmed in the state.

Production on the feature films “Tammy,” “Careful What You Wish For,” “The Ultimate Life,” “The World Made Straight,” “Grass Stains,” “The Squeeze,” “Captive” and “Tusk” also took place in North Carolina. Made-for-television movies also had a strong presence as “Christmas In Conway,” Norman Rockwell’s “Shuffleton Barbershop” and “The Perfect Summer” all were filmed and aired in 2013. National commercials for Mountain Dew, ESPN, NASCAR, Planters, Audi and Fiat also shot in the state.

“The film industry continues to have a major impact on the state’s economy and provide job opportunities for thousands of North Carolinians,” said Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker. “It is great to see our state continue its success in the industry.”

Beyond the more than $254 million in direct spending, additional spending and job creation has taken place on numerous lower budget projects and commercials.

“The past three years have produced unheralded numbers in direct in-state spending and job opportunities,” said NC Film Office Director Aaron Syrett.

Established in 1980, the North Carolina Film Office is part of the N.C. Division of Tourism, Film and Sports Development in the N.C. Department of Commerce. Its primary responsibilities are to recruit productions to the state by marketing the many assets—including the resources, crew base, established infrastructure and locations statewide—North Carolina has to offer. In addition, the film office assists productions with permitting and other logistics and works hand-in-hand with regional film commissions in the Wilmington, Research Triangle, Piedmont Triad, Charlotte and Western regions of the state. Since its creation, 400+ projects have filmed in the state, directly spending over $1 billion and creating more than 100,000 job opportunities for crew, talent and extras.

Hank and Jed Movie Pictures Featured in Battlefield 4

EADICEThe day before the launch of the highly anticipated Battlefield 4, EA Games released the Multiplayer Trailer for the video game created by DICE.  Right around the one minute mark, a guy sounding awfully like the Noob (Brent Triplett), a character in the popular animated web series, Battlefield Friends, drives an ATV off a skyscraper, screaming, “LEVOLUTION” as he crashes into a helicopter.  If you look at the more than 7,500 comments, the fans instantly recognized the voice. After all, that high-pitched energy is unmistakable.  Haven’t seen it yet? Check it out!

Not even a day after the launch of BF4, youtube videos began popping up. People would swear up and down they heard the voices of the Medic (Nate Panning) and the Engineer (Jon Etheridge) from Battlefield Friends in the game.  Like this video for example.

After 1,000s of comments and multiple videos like these, the secret is out. Wilmington, NC’s own Hank and Jed Movie Pictures has FINALLY admitted it. “Yes, we’re in Battlefield 4.”  Okay, it might not be a secret as so many have posted about it, but at least it is official now.

Tony Schnur (Sniper)

Tony Schnur (Sniper)

So, how did this come about? I caught up with DICE’s Voice Over Designer, Viktor Israelsson, all the way in Stockholm, Sweden.  There’s actually no crazy story to attach.  He simply emailed the guys and asked them.

“Being a big BFF (Battlefield Friends) fan myself and also being a fan of underground animation culture (such as Newgrounds.com and similar), I simply thought it would be cool to have the BFF crew in the game,” said Isreaelsson. “Working with Voice Over, it was largely up to me and my colleague, Ludvig Kullberg, to find and pick characters for the multi-player and some small part single-player characters.”

Brent Triplett (The Noob)

Brent Triplett (The Noob)

Brent Triplett, Jon Etheridge, Tony Schnur and Nate Panning recorded at Post 1200, a post-production facility in Wilmington, NC. They all agreed on what an amazing experience it was to work with Viktor.

Jon Etheridge (Engineer)

Jon Etheridge (Engineer)

“When we first started making BFFs we thought it would be great if the developers would someday be aware of our show,” the Hank and Jed team stated. “Now years later being invited to be a voice in the game was an honor for all of us. Working with Viktor was great, he doesn’t know it yet, but we are all moving in with him next summer.”

Nate Panning (Medic)

Nate Panning (Medic)

Israelsson concurs. “Working with the BFFs was an awesome experience. All of them are really talented voice actors in the first place, and not just the humorous parts. They are all very professional, and in between they’re as fun as you’d expect them to be. The BFF recording sessions were a blast!”

Now if you are wondering about any other surprises the DICE team has in store for you, well you will just have to play the game.  If you ask the Noob about any BF4 secrets, you know exactly what he will say. See below.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/17/2013 – NC Film Critic’s Choice Nominees, Sleepy Hollow Misnomer, PCA’s and more.

sleepy-hollow1

Goooood Mornin’ Wilmywood!  Let’s kick off the blog this morning with a Sleepy Hollow concern from one of the entertainment bloggers out there in the world.  HW Hill was a little confused about Sleepy Hollow missing an episode, saying, “I guess it didn’t get a full episode order, or it was just meant to be that short.”

No worries, HWHills!  I got your back.  My sources over at Fox set the record straight.

“Fox decided to air them differently.  The Season One order is 13.  It’s always been 13 and they are shooting 13.  We just decided to combine episode 12 and 13 into a 2-hour finale.  In fact, the finale is gonna be epic.  It’s gonna be huge.”

Episode 11 will air January 13th, 2014, 9pm EST and the big finale (Episode 12/13 combo) will air Monday, January 20th beginning at 8pm EST on Fox!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/16/2013 Wilmywood Holiday flicks, PCAs, Nicolas Sparks and more.

Wilmywood Shot Christmas Movie of the Day

We’ve had a few holiday movies pass through this fabulous city, so I thought I would share a few with you this week!  Today, we feature The Angel Doll:  Shot in 2000 in Wilmington, NC as well as Memphis, TN (at St. Jude), this holiday movie stars our beloved Pat Hingle, Betsy Brantley, Beatrice Bush and Nick Searcy.  It’s the story of two small town boys from different sides of the tracks: 1950’s childhood and self-redemption. Young “Whitey” Black (so called because of a tuft of blanched hair on the left side of his head) lives in poverty with his single mother and ailing, four-year old sister, Sandy. Just across town, young Jerry Barlow lives the advantages of a middle class lifestyle with both parents and his younger brother. When mischief casts Whitey and Jerry into a shared paper route, Jerry quickly learns of Whitey’s desire to buy his sister an angel doll for Christmas. Even though no such dolls exist in their hometown, Whitey, Jerry and a host of colorful characters set out in search of Sandy’s gift. Along the way, reversals of fortune, theft, prejudice and, ultimately, the boy’s friendship opens their eyes to the vastness of the small town around them.

201110-the-best-of-meLate Friday morning, I broke the news that DiNovi Pictures along with Nicolas Sparks is taking “The Best of Me” to New Orleans. Even though just 2 months ago they were still keeping Wilmington in mind, as Nicolas Sparks is a North Carolina native, they made the switch to Louisiana soon after.  No word about the possibility of any footage being shot here at all. The Production Weekly states they begin production in March. If anything changes, I will let you know.

BREAKING: Nicolas Sparks Flick Heads to the Crescent City

201110-the-best-of-me

After all the waiting and checking in with department heads, it looks like DiNovi Pictures along with Nicolas Sparks is taking “The Best of Me” to New Orleans.  No word about the possibility of any footage being shot here at all.  The Production Weekly states they begin production in March.   If anything changes, I will let you know.

Nothing has been said as to why this film is heading to the deep South, but I can think of a few reasons.  If you are thinking film incentives, let me shed some light on what Louisiana has to offer.  According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Lousisiana  has a 30 percent transferable credit for qualified applicants for total in-state expenditures related to the production of a motion picture.  An additional 5 percent labor tax credit can be earned on the payroll of Louisiana residents who are employed by a state-certified motion picture production. The tax credits are fully transferable and the state has no limit to the amount of tax credits that can be earned by a single production.

A sad day for North Carolina indeed.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/13/2013 – 3 Wilmywood Shot Flicks Make Success List, Casting call for Top Model and Holiday Parties

Box Office Mojo’s Ray Subers reveals the Top 10 Box Office Success Stories in 2013 as part on IMDb’s Year in Review.  Three Wilmywood shot movies made that list which discusses over-performing blockbusters along with surprise hits:

IM3#1 of course is Iron Man 3 – Ray says, “While Iron Man 3 was the top movie of the year at the domestic box office (over $409 million), the real upside was overseas, where its $806 million haul was more than double that of its predecessor. Worldwide, the movie’s $1.2 billion total ranks fifth all-time. ”

werethemillers#6 We’re the Millers – Ray writes,  “Benefiting from good scheduling and a strong premise, road trip comedy. We’re the Millers got off to a solid start in early August. The movie then held well thanks to strong word-of-mouth, and ultimately became the highest-grossing movie of August 2013. To date, it has earned over $150 million at the domestic box office. ”

ConjuringComing in right behind one of the best comedies of the year is The Conjuring at #7.  This is definitely on the surprise list, surpassing all expectations.  “The Conjuring wrapped up its domestic run with $137.4 million, which made it the top supernatural horror movie in over a decade. ”

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/11/2013 Max Steel Tests For Lead Roles, Times Like Dying, A Holiday Party and more!

Let the testing begin!  We’ve got a few choice actors and actresses fighting for two top notch roles in the upcoming flick, Max Steel, soon to be shot here in Wilmywood.  Of course, the top spot is Max himself.  And as for the female role, The Tracking Board reports it is currently listed as “undisclosed.”

MaxSteel Test

Anyhow, from left to right, here are the contenders ladies and gentleman!  (“Prisoners”, “Lost”),   (“Necessary Roughness”), and Noah Silver (“The Borgias”) are testing to play Max. For the undisclosed female role both  (“Parenthood”, “Ironside”) and  (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”, “The Gates”) are in the running.  Who do you think will be heading to Wilmywood?

An Indiegogo campaign had begun for the short film Times Like Dying.  Lemme just say, they had me at Evan Vetter, who is in my personal top 5 favorite filmmakers in Wilmington.  Of course he’s is teaming up with some other very loved filmmakers as well: Shon Blotzer, Anthony Reynolds and Parrish Stikeleather.  You’re money will be very well spent with these guys involved.  So, spot them a 5 or so.  You will be glad you did! Times Like Dying is a 20-minute narrative short film set in the Post-Civil War South involving a man named Percy Dixon and his brothers who are stuck with no good options. They are facing the loss of their family farm and backed into a corner. They decide the only way to save their livelihood is to rob a bank. After the robbery, the Dixon clan become separated, but rendezvous at a small farm where they have a chance encounter with a lawman who has seen better days. Over the course of the night, the truth of their actions is discovered. Loyalties are tested. Hostages are taken. Surviving the night begins to outweigh saving the farm. tscc3 E_EtcThe Eclectic Etc. is having their Grand Opening/Holiday Party this Saturday night from 6:00pm-9:00pm. SLEEPY HOLLOW RATINGS: How many viewers did the Golem Gobble?

sleepy-hollow1

Last night’s episode was the last new Sleepy Hollow to air before the new year,  but hey in return they did bring us the Monster of the Week!  Let’s find out if the numbers were just as deliciously monstrous.  The overnight numbers are in.  Last week, Sanctuary (Episode 9)  held on to 6.6 viewers after adjustments. This week, The Golem (Episode 10) numbers are a tick down from last week, averaging a 2.1 (A18-49) with 6.5 million viewers.  Not bad after taking a week off.  As always, we still need to see if the Sleepyheads will adjust up or down later in the day.

Joe Adalian – “ALMOST HUMAN hanging in there, up a tick to 1.8. But SLEEPY misses BONES: Last night’s ep down to a 2.1”

.
Gaude Paez Morose ‏–  “#SleepyHollow came back pretty steady in Adults 18-49 (2.1 vs 2.2) and Total Viewers (6.5 Mil vs 6.6 Mil) after a week off. #thegolem
