THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 01/24/2014 – NC Oscar Qualifying Fest, Actors Info, Wilmywood Deemed One of the Best, Marty Siu and more!

FINALLY we made it to Friday!  Man, is it me or did this week feel like the LONGEST week ever?  Well, let’s get right to it!

riverrun-logoFILMMAKERS GET READY!  Winston-Salem’s own RiverRun International Film Festival announced this week that it has been accepted as a qualifying festival for the Oscars in the Documentary Short Subject award category. Evan Vetter, are you listening?  Tony Morin?  Rob Hill?

This is huge news for North Carolina Filmmakers.  Entering your film and trying to attend festival can get really expensive, so it’s nice to have an Oscar qualifying festival in our state.  This new change to River Run allows  documentary shorts to forgo a standard theatrical run, provided that winning films otherwise comply with Academy rules. Now in its 16th year, RiverRun will run April 4-13 in downtown Winston-Salem.

logoWe were doin’ a little touchdown dance when this news came out yesterday.  WILMYWOOD is #2 in Moviemaker Magazine’s Best Places to Live & Work as a Moviemaker in 2014

The article sited of course 3 of our flicks  were in the top grossing films of 2013.  I think our NC Film crew can take full credit for that.  That’s right!  Your welcome Iron Man!  Moviemaker also sites our North Carolina’s tax incentives, the increase of the project cap from $7.5 to $20 million.  But my favorite part was the last sentence which came from  Aaron Syrett, Director of our NC Film Office:

“If producers are not looking at North Carolina, they’re not doing their jobs!”

Haha!  Yeah, you right!  Tell ’em Aaron!  If you notice, the #1 cities are not mentioned.  You gotta buy the mag to find out. Gotta say that is pretty smart marketing plan on their part.  It hits the shelves on Tuesday.  So who is going to be #1 in the big cities?   Atlanta?  New Orleans?

nonoOkay  – Moving on.  I gotta complaint yesterday that actors were directly contacting Principal Casting Directors.   So, I said I would try to help in this department.  If you are a working actor, then you know this is a HUGE no-no.  This does not help you!  Okay, but you know what,  after giving it some thought, I know you don’t wanna hear it from me.

We should  probably get an expert to chime in on this subject.  I will let Casting Director Marty Siu give you some insight on this topic.  LISTEN NOW!

By the way, when I called Marty she was surrounded by a film crew who is shooting a Suicide Prevention Film.  She believes that this is a very important issue, so not only has she volunteered her time being part of the crew, but her son Logan Siu has volunteered his acting skills to bring this film to life! Way to give back Siu family! This little flick is written and directed by Missy Beasley and also stars Rebekah Cohen.  It is being produced by Clout Motion Pictures!

I wonder since it’s a ball this year, if I will have to get dolled up?

Why Actors Should NEVER Contact Principal Casting Directors Directly

nonoOkay  – I gotta complaint that actors were directly contacting Principal Casting Directors.   So, I said I would try to help in this department.  If you are a working actor, then you know this is a HUGE no-no.  This does not help you in your plight to be the next rising star!

Okay, but you know what?  After giving it some thought, I know you don’t wanna hear it from me.  Let’s  get an expert to chime in on this subject.  Casting Director Marty Siu explains why.

NC Film Incentives – Vendors Speak Out on the Impact of Film

keepncI would like to give major kudos to Gary McNair for his take on the film incentives.  His latest “My Turn” editorial was exactly what most of us think when it comes to the incentives.  As always he ends his schpeel with, “That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn.”  Well, thank you Gary, don’t mind if I do!  Let’s add something to his little piece.  We have a few friends in the industry that have went out of their way to speak with some local business owners and get their thoughts about the film industry and the impact it has on our economy.  One of which is our friend Beth who turned the camera to Gwenyfar Rohler, managing partner of Old Books on Front St.

(If you are getting an error message, click the title and watch it directly on YouTube) I completely feel the urge go drive down there right now and buy something. Gwenyfar is one of many local business owners who have a story to tell.  We encourage other vendors and local businesses to follow suit. Let your voices be heard.

Now, back to Gary.  His title, “My Turn: film incentives create jobs, tourism” was a perfect follow up to his previous editorial about “uncertainty” hurting our economy in Wilmywood.

Gary writes, “Now, I’m not in favor of incentives for every industry, but none makes more sense to me than incentives for the film industry.  For me it’s about jobs.  It’s about tourism. It’s about the other businesses it brings to the area.  And it’s about the good things that industry brings to the cultural aspects of our community.

Thanks for letting us chime in Gary!  And thank you to WECT for letting the man speak his mind!  NC Film lovers, please send him an email and give him some love – >READ ‘MY TURN’ NOW

So What the Hell Does a Grip Do Anyway?

Mark Vargo

Mark Vargo

This video from Mark Vargo pretty much sums up the question, “So what the hell does a Grip do anyway?”  On his Vimeo page, he says, “Part tutorial, part love letter – this video represents my take on the importance of the grip department. No grips, no Oscar nomination. Film schools don’t spend enough time on the essentials of gripping and for the life of me I don’t know why! Grips provide literally 1/2 of the lighting on stage and sometimes 100% of the lighting outdoors! You cannot learn how to shoot without some knowledge of “cutting” light. Hopefully this video will help you approach your lighting plan differently in the future.” Excellent job, Mark! Great video!  MARK VARGO IMDb
