NC Film Incentives – Vendors Speak Out on the Impact of Film

keepncI would like to give major kudos to Gary McNair for his take on the film incentives.  His latest “My Turn” editorial was exactly what most of us think when it comes to the incentives.  As always he ends his schpeel with, “That’s my turn. Now it’s your turn.”  Well, thank you Gary, don’t mind if I do!  Let’s add something to his little piece.  We have a few friends in the industry that have went out of their way to speak with some local business owners and get their thoughts about the film industry and the impact it has on our economy.  One of which is our friend Beth who turned the camera to Gwenyfar Rohler, managing partner of Old Books on Front St.

(If you are getting an error message, click the title and watch it directly on YouTube) I completely feel the urge go drive down there right now and buy something. Gwenyfar is one of many local business owners who have a story to tell.  We encourage other vendors and local businesses to follow suit. Let your voices be heard.

Now, back to Gary.  His title, “My Turn: film incentives create jobs, tourism” was a perfect follow up to his previous editorial about “uncertainty” hurting our economy in Wilmywood.

Gary writes, “Now, I’m not in favor of incentives for every industry, but none makes more sense to me than incentives for the film industry.  For me it’s about jobs.  It’s about tourism. It’s about the other businesses it brings to the area.  And it’s about the good things that industry brings to the cultural aspects of our community.

Thanks for letting us chime in Gary!  And thank you to WECT for letting the man speak his mind!  NC Film lovers, please send him an email and give him some love – >READ ‘MY TURN’ NOW

So What the Hell Does a Grip Do Anyway?

Mark Vargo

Mark Vargo

This video from Mark Vargo pretty much sums up the question, “So what the hell does a Grip do anyway?”  On his Vimeo page, he says, “Part tutorial, part love letter – this video represents my take on the importance of the grip department. No grips, no Oscar nomination. Film schools don’t spend enough time on the essentials of gripping and for the life of me I don’t know why! Grips provide literally 1/2 of the lighting on stage and sometimes 100% of the lighting outdoors! You cannot learn how to shoot without some knowledge of “cutting” light. Hopefully this video will help you approach your lighting plan differently in the future.” Excellent job, Mark! Great video!  MARK VARGO IMDb

Casting Directors Named for ABC’s Secrets & Lies

secretsLiesAnd the news is in!  Tara and Chase are gonna be quite busy in the first quarter of 2014.  Not only does Feldstein/Paris Casting have Max Steel, they also got the local Principal Casting gig for Secrets & Lies.  So, congrats my loves!

Also, congratulations to Ashli Bogart as she was named the Extras Casting Director for our ABC pilot.  I know a lot of local folks will be curious about this casting choice, however, it does make sense.

With Barbara D’Alessandro working on this project, both have worked on projects together in South Carolina.  Ashli was Extras Casting Director for all seven seasons of Lifetime’s Army Wives as well as the ECD for Reckless which is expected to air on CBS this summer. But she has worked on quite a few projects here in Wilmington, so she is no stranger to our town.  (SEE CREDITS)

Ashli is “excited to work in Wilmington and excited to meet some new talent!”  Welcome back Ashli! We are glad to have you!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 01/20/2014 Brothers Olson set release date, Under the Dome, Jackie Burch, Sleepy Hollow

Happy Monday my Wilmywood peeps! Hope you had a great weekend! If you missed it over the weekend, we posted two production heads stance on incentives!  It’s a total MUST READ.

Buzz, buzz, ohhh the buzz about tonight’s epic 2 hour finale of Sleepy Hollow tonight! Don’t forget, it’s starts one hour early. 8pm EST on FOX!

In tonight’s episode, Ichabod and Abbie uncover a secret in George Washington’s Bible; Irving makes a decision that alters his future; the battle between good and evil comes to a head, changing Sleepy Hollow forever.

Can’t wait!  Now let’s move on to our other hot show, Under the Dome!

UTDJim_LindaAt the TCA’s last week, a teaser trailer was played and interestingly enough, some weird things are happening, including Big Jim (Dean Norris) kissing Linda Esquivel (Natalie Martinez).  Ahhh!

According to EP Brian K. Vaughn,  “The second season is going to take us places the book never got to go, he’s bringing his own twists and turns. Stephen King gave us ideas we’ve never imagined. What’s outside [the dome] comes inside.”

UTDSet062013_0102It seems that a little more has come out about the new characters we talked about last month.  Like Sam, the crazy man in the woods, is actually Junior’s uncle.  He will be makin’ trouble for Barbie.    But that’s not the worst!  Neal Baer revealed that not one, but two of our favorite characters won’t live to see the second episode!   Ahhhhh! Noooo!!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – Week In Review, January 18, 2014 (VIDEO)

Lawd! Technical Difficulties, one day late!  Yikes! Sheila Brothers gives you the scoop about the hottest shows and movies filming in Wilmington, NC. Here is a Week in Review from Jan 13 – Jan 18, 2014.

Why do productions come to NC? Ask FX Network Chief or CFO Noble House Entertainment

Why do productions come to North Carolina?  Ask FX chief John Landgraf:

John Landgraf

“Without the incentive, we wouldn’t be there. With it, then it essentially becomes a conversation about geography and topography. And then the location competes and wins on the merits.”  ~ FX Chief John Landgraf

Jeff Hidek from the Star News  grabbed that quote from Landgraf during the TCAs.  Here’s is the complete article that Hunter Ingram put together from the event.  It includes many other quotes you will want to read.

Nick Goundry of The Location Guide writes, “Confirmation of the pilot shoot is clearly good news, but North Carolina’s filming incentive is still set to expire at the end of 2014. If it is not renewed soon, the state’s production industry runs the risk of losing a full season of How & Why to a competitor, should the show get a season order from the network.” READ ARTICLE FROM THE LOCATION GUIDE NOW!

NOBLE

How about we ask Noble House Entertainment.  Is it the locations, the nice people?  What drives them to film in North Carolina?  Donald Driftmeier, chief financial officer for Noble House Entertainment Pictures, a movie production company based in Ontario, brings his projects to NC because…

Every investment is risky,” said Donald Driftmeier. “Each one of our films is a separate business. Not only do you have a theatrical release, but the film can end up on an airline, and it goes on DVD. It’s about mitigating the risk for investors. We find a location like North Carolina that fits and works and is going to be ok for us and still make a profit.”

Now his investor for his latest film, Becker’s Farm. that is in the final phase of pre-production wants not only this movie, but three more as well.  That would be 4 productions that North Carolina can take in from one company.

“For North Carolina, movie and television production means jobs,” Roemmich said.
