The Wilmywood Daily – 05/09/2014 The Upfronts, Firestarter, The Crow, Locations today and more.

We made it to the weekend! Woo Hoo!!  First, let me remind you of the excitement that is to come next week.  The Upfronts!  In case you don’t know, the Upfronts are scheduled presentations from all the networks.  Normally, it is during this time (8 weeks), we find out about shows that will get picked up, special sneak peeks of shows currently in production and they also give out premiere dates.

UPFRONTS The major networks will be presenting next week.  What will we find out?  Well, probably the fate of ABC’s Secrets and Lies (READ DEADLINE’S TAKE ON ABC PILOTS) that shot here back in February as well as Red Zone, now called Field of Play (although I heard they will probably head back to LA if it gets picked up).  We are also waiting on a premiere date for Sleepy Hollow.  So get ready!  It’s gonna be fun!  We won’t know anything about How and Why for at least another month, but it looks very promising!

I wanted to thank Edward Martin for writing an incredible article in Business NC Magazine!  He fairly wrote about both sides of the issue of NC Film Incentives and it was beautifully written.  If you find a copy, pick up a few!

Now, where will our productions be shooting around town today?

Under the Dome will be playing around at Greenfield Lake Park and on Wellesley Place and Max Steel will be off Middle Sound Loop Rd. Sleepy Hollow will be shooting later today in Castle Hayne again and The Sin Seer is at an undisclosed location.

Max-SteelMax Steel stole the hearts of many and closed some pre-sales throughout most of Europe as well as Asia! We’re talkin’ Germany, France, Italy, Russia and all over Southeast Asia, they all want some of the Steel action!  Congrats already to the Wilmywood folks working so hard on this fun superhero flick!

Oh and guess what I heard!  Our awesome Brett Cullen who was here last year for Riverguard, is back in town!  Now rumor has it he will be making an appearance on Under the Dome!  We will see if the trades pick that up or if I can do some some digging, I will tell more as soon as I know! If this is true, I can’t wait to hug him!  LOVE this guy!

Never fear, Sleepyheads- whatever’s ahead, @NikkieBehari says Lt. Mills is ready to fight in Season 2:

imageSunday is a very special day in Wilmywood movie history. On May 11, 1984 a very important film was released. That movie was Stephen King’s Firestarter. The film starred a young Drew Barrymore, David Keith and Heather Locklear. It’s a story of a young couple who undergo testing as part of a paid medical experiment. The experiment leaves the couple with telekinetic powers and the child the convince together is born with a “pyro kinetic” ability meaning the child can start fires with her mind. With that power, the government seeks her out and her family helps to keep her safe as she learns that fear and anger control the environment around her.

This movie is monumental in Wilmywood’s history as it is often referred to as the movie that “put us on the map” as a studio town 30 years ago. It all started with Frank Capra, Jr. spotting Orton Plantation on the cover of Southern Accents Magazine while he was searching for the ultimate location for the horror flick.  So, we happened to luck out because where ever that home was, that’s where they were gonna shoot it.  Crew members actually built a replica of the exterior of the plantation about one mile down the road.  Why?  So they could set it on fire and blow it up, of course. Other locations include the Pender County Courthouse, Isabel Holmes Bridge,  and Wilmington’s 1st Presbyterian Church.  This movie was when Wilmywood fell in love with Mr. Stephen King and (seemingly) he with us.

We also have another NC film which is reaching its 20 year mark.. The same day only ten years after Firestarter was released, The Crow was released as well. The Crow made it’s way from the sound stages of LA to NC and stars Brandon Lee, son of martial arts legend, Bruce Lee. The film is a story of a man who returns from death to seek revenge for the death of his would-be bride and himself. Some of the film’s most memorable scenes were done at the I deal Cement plant (where Max Steel and Under the Dome is shooting now) as well as downtown Wilmington.  But most of it was filmed at Carolco Studios, which we know now to be EUE/Screen Gems.  Sadly, we lost Brandon during the course of filming, but we in Wilmywood are forever grateful for the art he brought into out town twenty years ago.

Happy anniversary to two Wilmywood movies that mean very much to out film community.
