Banshee’s Director Greg Yaitanes’ wrap speech

Last week, Cinemax’s Banshee wrapped it’s third season in Charlotte, North Carolina. Director Greg Yaitanes gathered the cast and crew.  In a heartfelt speech of gratitude and sadness, he ended his talk with a farewell.

“The hardest thing I want to touch on is I want to thank this gang, North Carolina as our home. We’ve all talked to you individually, but…

It’s a very sad time when you look at what we built, both in the community, in relationships, what we physically built on stage to be pushed out essentially by state politics, not by our own doing, or our own failures.

bansheeWe’ve built up something great here and it’s sad for so many reasons, but yet I wanna look at the these years we have had here, the incredible show that we built, and the work we’ve done together is hard, I know, I work everybody here hard, I know it’s a tough show, I know we rolled with a lot of punched this year. But the work that has resulted that we will see in January is phenomenal and this crew and this gang which is a mix of people I have worked with on House and beyond…it’s exciting to see new and old everybody came together in a way that it’s been a time in my life I will always remember in my career, I will always cherish it. Thank you so much for everything.”

Just a couple of days ago, Governor Pat McCrory just wasn’t exactly sure if the film incentives expiring was the reason for Banshee‘s move to Louisiana.

Are we clear now, Governor?

Pender County leaders urge Governor to call special session for economic development including film.

The Pender County Board of Commissioners sent out a letter today to Governor Pat McCrory, Senator Phil Berger and Speaker Thom Tillis urging the Governor to call a special session of the General Assembly to reconsider a “broad range of economic development opportunities,” with film incentives being a top priority.

Board Members J. David Williams, Fred McCoy, George Brown, Jr., Jimmy Tate, Chester Ward as well as Interim county manager, Robert Murphy and county attorney Trey Thurman expressed their concern saying the loss of the current film incentives will hit their area hard.  They also stated that they have spent a lot of money developing the industrial park and the loss of a number of incentive programs could mean they will lose the tools they need in order to “effectively secure tenants.”

They have asked the Governor to please call the special session so that they can reinstate the much needed economic programs that has served North Carolina well over the years.

Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood get ‘Happy’ for Service Dogs on September 8th.

New ‘Happy’ Video Featuring Humanized Dogs to Debut 9/ 8 .

‘Happy2 – Dog Days’ to Support Nonprofit Providing Service Dogs for People with Disabilities

A press release has just been issued and we can’t wait until Monday!  Happy2 – Dog Days (, a  new video set to the Pharrell Williams song “Happy,” featuring humanized dogs on vacation at Wrightsville Beach, will be released on September 8th.

Two local photographers/videographers, Ned Leary and Will Page, aim to support Canines for Service, an Wilmington-based organization committed to providing service dogs for people with disabilities nationwide.  They are releasing the fun on September 8th.  Here’s a teaser of what’s to come.

According to the press release, the video includes four main dogs and an appearance by a Vietnamese pot bellied pig.  After winning a trip to Wrightsville Beach, the video tracks the dogs as they visit the beach, go to bars, fish and kayak, activities that highlight the unique lifestyle there.

Happy2 – Dog Days also includes guest appearances by Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood, who were just here for Nicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride. They filmed their fun scenes at the local favorite Buddy’s Crab Shack and Oyster Bar in Wrightsville Beach.

In the first local Happy  video, Leary and Page filmed local residents as they danced around Wrightsville Beach. Now they decided to do a sequel. They wanted to create something even bigger that included more dancing. After filming  some furry friends for one scene of the new video, the pair decided the entire film needed to be about dogs.

Director Ned Leary decided to kick it up a notch and use the fun to support our local non-profit, Canines for Service.

The filming duo completed the video in six weeks, without any financial backing and all on their own time. Leary, Page and the dogs’ owners/handlers were all previously unknown to one another before filming and include a waitress, a doctor, a premature infant ICU nurse and a Coast Guard instructor.

“Once we decided to shoot the entire video around the idea of dogs visiting Wrightsville Beach, we knew we wanted to highlight the work of a great service dog organization,” Leary said. “Canines for Service does such wonderful work for people with disabilities in the state, and we hope Happy2 – Dog Days will introduce people to the powerful work they do in helping people with disabilities live with greater independence.”

For nearly 20 years, Canines for Service has helped people with disabilities live with greater independence. The organization helps select and train dogs for service.

Wilmywood shot ‘Firestarter’ out on Blu-Ray today!

Back in May of this year we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Wilmywood-shot Firestarter. The Stephen King film starred a young Drew Barrymore, David Keith and Heather Locklear. It’s a story of a young couple who undergo testing as part of a paid medical experiment. The experiment leaves the couple with telekinetic powers and the child the convince together is born with a “pyro kinetic” ability meaning the child can start fires with her mind. With that power, the government seeks her out and her family helps to keep her safe as she learns that fear and anger control the environment around her.

This movie is monumental in Wilmywood’s history as it is often referred to as the movie that “put us on the map” as a studio town 30 years ago. It all started with Frank Capra, Jr. spotting Orton Plantation on the cover of Southern Accents Magazine while he was searching for the ultimate location for the horror flick.  So, we happened to luck out because where ever that home was, that’s where they were gonna shoot it.  Crew members actually built a replica of the exterior of the plantation about one mile down the road.  Why?  So they could set it on fire and blow it up, of course. Other locations include the Pender County Courthouse, Isabel Holmes Bridge,  and Wilmington’s 1st Presbyterian Church.  This movie was when Wilmywood fell in love with Mr. Stephen King and (seemingly) he with us.

Today, we can now celebrate it all over again.  It has been released on Blu-Ray!  Enjoy!
