‘Check Point’ brings William Forsythe and others to Wilmywood

A lot of folks have assumed lately that anytime they see a production crew out and about in our tri-county area, it’s Under the Dome. Because well…that’s all we’ve had.  Until last week, that is.  We’ve got an indie flick that started production last week here in Wilmywood.  It’s called Check Point.

The premise is fun.  During a routine camp out, a local vagrant discovers plans for an invasion in America. When he tries to notify the local Sheriff about his discovery, the Sheriff dismisses his claims and has him locked up for loitering. But we all know what’s really going down, right?  Questions and tempers begin to rise. Why this little beach community with it’s Norman Rockwell way of life? A town where everyone knows one another… or so they thought. Dun, Dun Dun!!   War is Hell, they say, and Hell comes home at the Check Point.

The cast is full of familiar faces.  William Forsythe takes on the lead as the sheriff of the small town. Joining Forsythe is former pro-wrestler Bill Goldberg. If you remember, he battled Jean-Claude Van Damme in Universal Soldier: The Return.  Other cast members include Kenny Johnson, Fred Williamson, Tyler Mane, and Michelle Lee. SEE FULL CAST AND CREW LIST

The majority of the production will be in Pender County, mainly downtown Burgaw. However, Rocky Point will get some love as some big battle scenes will take place July 7th-9th. New Hanover County will also witness an epic raid on our iconic NC Battleship on July 16th.

Writer/Director Thomas Churchill used to live in Wilmington years ago and tried to get a film off the ground, but to no avail.  All you indie filmmakers know just how difficult that truly is. Since then he moved to Los Angeles, but he never forgot Wilmington and he kept his promise to shoot here. And that he did! Now that’s perseverance!

Producer Tony Perez has enjoyed his time here so far. “It’s been a pleasurable experience here in Wilmington. The people are awesome, the food is great and it’s not super expensive,” Perez said.  “We’ve rounded out our production team with local help–from ADs to Props to APs.  We are looking forward to the next 3 weeks here as there’s much to do.”

Check Point wraps in Wilmywood July 19th.  They then head back to Los Angeles to complete filming.  They plan on releasing the film in 2016.

Other Wilmington peeps who are working on the flick include David Schifter (Associate Producer), local caterer Gailyn Gagliardi of Burgaw and even some film students from Cape Fear Community College are getting some real film experience on this flick.

HB2: We. Are. Not. This.

First, please let me apologize for taking so long to blog about this. I’ve tried to wrap my head around this whole HB2 thing. People have been flying off the handle about this. Some with facts and some with fiction. Trying to decipher which is which has been a bitch.

There are so many thoughts running through my head. First off, if you don’t know me, I am an unaffiliated female who believes in equality for all.  So, with that being said, I am sure you know how I feel about HB2. So instead of explaining it piece by piece (my brain would explode), let’s look at the effects it has had on our state so far.

Just when things start rolling again, our legislators and governor had go and throw away not only $42,000 for an emergency session but also more job creation here in North Carolina.

As an ambassador to the City of Wilmington,  it is become very difficult to welcome visitors here when folks are asking if it’s safe to be here. Seriously, lemme quote the last conversation I got about visiting North Carolina.

KATE: In light of the recent news story about NC, my wife and I will be visiting. We’re lesbian couple, will we have an issue with discrimination? Just Wondering

ME: No! There will not be any issues. Our legislators in North Carolina do NOT reflect the citizens who live here.

KATE: Thank you! That’s what I thought, but ya know I still has to check for peace of mind.

To those of us who live here, it seems like a ridiculous question because we live here and WE KNOW how welcoming this city is, but thanks to those who “represent us” we look like a bunch of haters and backward individuals.

So how is HB2 working out for us so far?

Let’s see, PayPal, Dow Chemical, the NBA, BioGen, American Airlines, Citi, Lowe’s, Wells Fargo, Apple, the NCAA, Google (just to name a few) are VERY disappointed in our leadership’s decision.

This week, large corporations like Bank of America, Cisco, Miramax and Uber signed onto a letter protesting the new law and demanding its repeal. Small businesses are also taking HB2 to task. [SOURCE]

Just today more than 15 large companies ie Reddit, eBay, Starbucks…joined the fight against North Carolina’s anti-LGBT law. [SOURCE]

HB2 is also creating uncertainty with companies as well.

Leaders from across the country have banned non-essential travel to North Carolina. San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, Seattle, West Palm Beach, and New York, with more pending.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed an executive order banning all non-essential state travel to North Carolina. The order requires all New York State agencies, departments, boards and commissions to immediately review all requests for state funded or state sponsored travel to the state of North Carolina, and bar any such publicly funded travel that is not essential to the enforcement of state law or public health and safety. [SOURCE]

As far as film is concerned in our state, we have a little backlash, but what we don’t know is how is will affect our future.

The Hulu/Lionsgate production Crushed had one casting call the day before the emergency session took place. Rumor has it, based on a couple of crew members who were hired for the production…HB2 was the reason they packed their bags. I cannot confirm that however.

My sources in Western NC have told me that Dirty Dancing ONLY stayed because they were already too vested with locations and talent timelines and had made a commitment to film there. Otherwise they would have hit the road as well. Again, however, I cannot confirm it.

As you probably have seen Producer/Director Rob Reiner stated immediately after HB2 passed, he will never bring a production to North Carolina as long as this bill is in place. He encouraged his peers in the film industry to do the same. [SOURCE]

Meanwhile not all in the General Assembly are backing the bill. Senator Jeff Jackson has taken to social media.

And our favorite red head Rep. Susi Hamilton is just as upset about the outcome of HB2.

And this…good Lord:  “The people of North Carolina want to talk about roads and economic development and jobs and that’s where I’m going to focus my attention, not on ridiculous restroom and locker room policies that some people are trying to force onto the private sector,” McCrory said. [SOURCE]

I can’t help but think of a school yard taunt: “Quit talking about yourself!” Hate to tell you this, McCrory, but the people of North Carolina are just getting started.  The Gov’na certainly made his bed, but he doesn’t want to lie in it any longer…

And it is also apparent, McCrory has no idea what’s in the bill they passed in a 12 hour period.

NC Attorney General Roy Cooper, who is running against McCrory, is asking all those who are ashamed of HB2 to sign a petition on ShameonMcCrory.com

Every hour, there are more companies, cities and states standing up against HB2.

In conclusion, I cannot stress to those who don’t live here that we in North Carolina want you to know our legislators DO NOT reflect who we are as citizens of North Carolina. We are welcoming. We are warm.  We. Are. Not. This.

Thanks for giving us all the headlines leaders of North Carolina…

Okay, now on to Wilmywood…first things first. Leo is NOT moving to Wilmington. I repeat Leonardo DiCaprio is NOT Buying Home in Wilmington. I can’t believe so many people actually fell for this one. If you missed this one Leonardo-DiCaprio-777x437over the weekend, THIS was posted just about everywhere via Facebook.  It only takes a moment to go to their ABOUT US section to know that “MBY News is a fantasy news site.  All news articles on mbynews.com are satire or pure fantasy.” So, now you know, sorry to disappoint.

While we may not have Leo, we do have the fabulous cast of SIX, that should make you feel a whole lot better 🙂 So where are these fabulous cast members?

Bolden is filming at St. Mary’s Church today.

Vacationland begins tomorrow. They head to Reggies 42nd Street Tavern  tomorrow.

Sleepy Hollow shoots at the sound stages today.

RumorslogoSo, over the past few months we’ve known it’s not a matter of IF Sleepy Hollow will leave North Carolina for season 3. The question has always been WHERE? With the new film grant in place for the first 6 months of 2015, and half of it already allocated to Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow spends way too much money to stay. There has been talk about Vancouver (which was top of the list for a while), also Philly, Louisiana, New York and Atlanta. Now the latest rumors are that Atlanta on the top of the list. Now with that being said, there has been no official announcement about a season 3. So, we shall see in the coming weeks if the rumors have any validity.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 11/17/2014 The Choice’s Wrap Party, Day one for Blue Mountain State and more.

Blue Mountain State: The Rise Of Thadland kicks off production today in Currie.  And will actually spend a lot of time there.  Good vibes going out to the cast and crew today!

Bolden is back on the stages in Rock Point. They swing into Wilmington tomorrow.

Even though The Choice has a few more days of shooting, the production had their wrap party yesterday afternoon at the local favorite Satellite Bar and Lounge. In attendance was Benjamin Walker, Teresa Palmer, Jesse Boyd, Tom Wilkinson to name a few.

Director Ross Katz got up and wished North Carolina well on our troubles we are facing with our fading film incentives saying, “I hope you guys have lots and lots of more movies down here in spite of the tax incentives situation, but I am sure I will see you on other films, I hope. I also wanna thank those folks who have given us their homes to shoot in. Thank you. The movie was beautiful thanks to your generosity.” He went on to give major kudos of course to the cast and the office staff who never gets enough love.” Great speech Ross!

The Choice is shooting in Whiteville today. Jesse Boyd should be happy about that.  It’s his hometown!  And yes, FINALLY, Tom Welling is back on set today!

Sleepy Hollow is filming on Stage 6 at Screen Gems today. And of course it’s another Sleepy night tonight!

Well, it looks like it just might happen, HOWEVER, I was told not to get to excited because they will probably bring up everything BUT film. We shall see. It’s shame because we will lose Sleepy Hollow if they order a complete 3rd season. Canada is the latest rumor.
