DOR releases their report for 2014 direct film spending in NC.

The Department of Revenue released their report for direct spending. Productions spent $241,372,169 in North Carolina on goods, supplies, wages and employee benefits in 2014, receiving $60,343,039 (25%) in rebates.

Just a quick clarification from the NC Film Office: the numbers released by the NCDOR reflect what productions SUBMITTED on their required forms–which they can file at any time the production is ready– and does not necessarily mean that is what was spent or jobs created that specific year. For example, the NCDOR report does not have the full season of “Secrets and Lies” and its “Sleepy Hollow” numbers are for a previous year (not 2014’s S2); thus the total number is not ALL of what was spent in 2014. There are also productions listed that filmed prior to 2014, like “Well Wishes” and “Los Jets.”

Now, that being said, taking the top spot was who we expected. Sleepy Hollow spent a hefty $43,648,743. The Fox production also took the top spot when it comes to hires. Sleepy Hollow employed 1593 folks (Season One).

Our CBS show, Under the Dome spent $35,158,244 and employed 500.

The Cinemax series Banshee brought us $35,051,297. (no employment # listed)

Homeland was not far behind, spending $31,029,540. (no employment # listed) Submitted from 2013.

Other productions of note include The Longest Ride which spent $23,345,745 and hired close to 600 people. Another big job giver was the family film Max which hits theaters in July.  They spent $18,630,757 and employed 1082 people.

Further breaking down the report, productions spent $136 million in New Hanover County and just over $95 million in Mecklenberg County.

In total, $241,372,169 was spent in North Carolina by film and TV productions last year with 8381 jobs created. Check out the links below to see what’s film has spent in North Carolina over the last 9 years.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 09/25/2014 Banshee, Homeland, Under the Dome, South of Hell, Paper Towns

Howdy!  As you can tell, I have not been posting everyday.  Why?  Well, with the NC film incentives coming to an end in December, there are no new productions that are making announcements, no new offices setting up.  It is simply bone dry.  So, yes, NC Film obviously affects my little small business I call a blog.  I do have some tidbits to share however. So, let’s get right to it.

Sadly this week, Banshee (pictured above) and Homeland in Charlotte are tearing down their sets down and relocating them to other states due to the film incentives expiring at the end of the year. Banshee will relocate to Louisiana while Homeland won’t return to Charlotte next season. The location for Homeland is yet to be determined.

Thank God, Producer Marty Bowen (who was just here for The Longest Ride) has returned to Charlotte to set up offices for one of the last films to come to North Carolina this year. It’s called Paper Towns and stars Nat Wolff.  Nan Morales has been named Line Producer. Production begins in November. There is not a an email set up yet, but you can send your crew resume via fax: 855.593.5484.  (Fax?  Who does that anymore?)

Battlecreek decided not to head to North Carolina. They will be filming in Mississippi after all.

Under the Dome extras casting director Vanessa Neimeyer will relocate to South Carolina for the project South of Hell for WEtv. Also headed that way are many of the crew members, office staff and a producer from Under the Dome as well. No word yet on where Under the Dome will be shooting for season 3. GET MORE DETAILS NOW

Sleepy Hollow is on hiatus this week and will return to a shoot schedule next week. Secrets and Lies stayed in their Porter’s Neck Location and the sound stages most of the week. But they did sneak out one day this week off Brandon Road.

Banshee’s Director Greg Yaitanes’ wrap speech

Last week, Cinemax’s Banshee wrapped it’s third season in Charlotte, North Carolina. Director Greg Yaitanes gathered the cast and crew.  In a heartfelt speech of gratitude and sadness, he ended his talk with a farewell.

“The hardest thing I want to touch on is I want to thank this gang, North Carolina as our home. We’ve all talked to you individually, but…

It’s a very sad time when you look at what we built, both in the community, in relationships, what we physically built on stage to be pushed out essentially by state politics, not by our own doing, or our own failures.

bansheeWe’ve built up something great here and it’s sad for so many reasons, but yet I wanna look at the these years we have had here, the incredible show that we built, and the work we’ve done together is hard, I know, I work everybody here hard, I know it’s a tough show, I know we rolled with a lot of punched this year. But the work that has resulted that we will see in January is phenomenal and this crew and this gang which is a mix of people I have worked with on House and beyond…it’s exciting to see new and old everybody came together in a way that it’s been a time in my life I will always remember in my career, I will always cherish it. Thank you so much for everything.”

Just a couple of days ago, Governor Pat McCrory just wasn’t exactly sure if the film incentives expiring was the reason for Banshee‘s move to Louisiana.

Are we clear now, Governor?

Cinemax’s Banshee to leave North Carolina.

bansheeMy sources are telling me that crew members were already told that Cinemax’s Banshee would not return to Charlotte, North Carolina for the next two seasons.  Now today, other sources have confirmed that and new information is coming our way, saying they will relocate to Louisiana for Season 4 & 5. I am hearing Baton Rouge. I was also told there was another show that they planned on shooting in between seasons and that will be moving to Louisiana as well.   These last two notes, however, have yet to be confirmed. I will keep you posted.

In 2013, Banshee spent more than $67 million in North Carolina.

What? Did you think the folks from the film industry were exaggerating when they said productions would leave without the current incentives in place?

Banshee ‘Call to Action’ for NC film

‘Being Human’s Meaghan Rath joins ABC’s ‘Secrets & Lies!’

Meaghan Rath (SyFy’s Being Human)who has been working on Cinemax’s Banshee over in Charlotte made her way to Wilmywood, for our latest television series, Secrets & Lies.  She will be playing Nicole, the younger but more mature sister of Natalie Martinez’s character, Jess. I’m super stoked about this!  She is my favorite character on Being Human! Sally!  Welcome to Wilmywood, Meaghan!

A message to Speaker Tillis and members of the NC House.

Speaker Tillis (and members of NC House),

We represent over 10,000 registered voters who are either film workers, or are their families and friends. The decisions you make in the days ahead will determine if we can continue to work, pay taxes and raise families here.

We will all be voting in the November election, and you can be absolutely certain that we will be motivated to get others to do so as well. We love our communities, we love working here, and we do not want to see our livelihood pushed out of state. You have the power to help keep good, clean jobs here.

The fact is, North Carolina has built a clean, multi-billion dollar industry for over 30 years that employs thousands in life-long careers, and generates needed revenue for thousands of small businesses.

Film tourism brings unprecedented numbers of visitors and their vacation dollars here, making another dramatic and positive impact on our economy.

Georgia and South Carolina are most eager for you to do the wrong thing for North Carolina, and send our jobs and revenue their way. Just the rumor of losing our incentives has already sent several television series, their production dollars and jobs we need to other states.

We are asking you to do the right thing for our state, and extend the existing incentive as it is. We have a good thing going for all of North Carolina. Please, don’t destroy it. And you can count on the fact that we will remember, in large and active numbers, what you do to support the film incentive, or to destroy it.

Please see short video below from the NC Film Crew Members (Runtime 1:14).
