THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 04/02/2014, HUGE Rumors From the Lot, Loomis Fargo, Secrets & Lies, Age of Miracles, Impact Study

WUIW

Good God!  An explosive amount of news came out yesterday!  I don’t know where to even begin!  Hmmm, let’s start with the fun stuff!  AND NOW IT’S TIME FOR [INSERT BILLOWING ECHO-Y VOICE] RUUUUMMOOOORS FROM THE LOT!

RumorslogoIf you remember back in the blog for Marth 17th, I reported that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke was here scouting,  but I had no idea which of the 5 projects in development she was working on next.  Well, I did some more digging and put my ear to the ground.  It looks as though she was here for AGE OF MIRACLES.  The film is based on the Karen Thompson Walker best-Catherine-hardwickeselling novel of the same name. Seth Lochhead (Hanna) has adapted the screenplay. River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad will produce. According to a press release announcing Catherine’s attachment to the project (over a year ago mind you) Age of Miracles is set amidst an advancing catastrophe after the Earth’s rotation mysteriously slows. It’s a suspenseful and romantic snapshot of one young girl’s adolescence, a poignant family drama, and a heartrending glimpse into the everyday tragedies and triumphs that define what it is to be human in a world that might just be ending.  As for details, well my sources tell me that it is indeed coming and they are looking at a June start.  That would mean offices would open fairly soon.  With all that being said, I am still going to keep this in the rumor section for now.  But if you are a fan of reading a book before you see the movie, I highly reccomend you pick up a copy.

Zach GalifianakisMore details are coming out about LOOMIS FARGO starring Owen Wilson and Zach Galifianakis.  Not long ago rumors were flying about this comedy caper heading to Winston-Salem.  However, my other sources are saying otherwise.  The latest scoop is that the name has reverted back to ARMORED CAR and that it will indeed be shot here in Wilmywood.  When?  Well, my sources say that they plan on opening offices in May with a production start in July.

secretsLiesWhat you think I am done?  Honey, I’ve been workin’ like a fiend trying to get you all the scoop.  Let’s move on to recently wrapped SECRETS & LIES. Some said S&L was moving to Charlotte.  Others said no, they are staying here.  They are both correct.  The latest Intel is that S&L would shoot here in Wilmywood to complete their 10 episode commitment, which means they could be back this summer.  Then, after those ten or if they have a season two, they would move to Charlotte.  They said have fully established locations they cannot leave behind within those first 10 episodes.

michael-cera-john-hawkesHoly Chiptole, I’ve actually got more scoop, but I am saving that for tomorrow!  So what else is going on?  Yesterday we announced FX’s HOW AND WHY has officially opened up offices at EUE/ScreenGems Studios. The pilot starring Michael Cera and John Hawkes is now accepting crew resumes. Please send resumes to howandwhypilot@gmail.com with your position in the subject line.

ncfilmEven though all that cool stuff is happening perhaps the BIGGEST news was the Impact Study that was FINALLY released yesterday!  This is HUGE!!!  The finding were exactly what we knew to be true, that Film=Jobs and NC gains from the industry being here.

“For every dollar of credit issued, the industry generated $9.11 in direct spending and contributed $1.52 in tax revenue back to North Carolina.”

$164M in business revenue to more than 1,000 small businesses across the State.”

“The incentive has allowed North Carolina to maintain a permanent crew base, providing 4,259 jobs at an average wage of $66,000, which is over a third higher than the national average for private industry ($41,750).”

WILMYWOOD_READHEARWATCH_BLOG

Howdy and Happy Hump Day!  This morning was super fun as Executive Producer/Director of UNDER THE DOME Jack Bender paid our studios a visit at Sunny 104.5.  We chatted about all things Dome and his Art Show that is coming up this Saturday. The interview is NOW posted.

JackInStudio

The Wilma W. Daniels Gallery (200 Hanover St.) is  showcasing Under the Dome’s Jack Bender’s art NOW through the 29th of this month.  Three of his pieces will be from Season One  of Under the Dome.  Think Pink Stars!  We will also get a sneak peek at some of the beautiful pieces for the upcoming season. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 12pm-5pm.  However, a special night is reserved for you to mingle with the artist that is Jack Bender this Saturday, March 22nd from 6pm-9pm.

The Under the Dome folks started out smoothly on Chestnut St, but soon had to evacuate due to a gas leak.  One crew member said, “The gas smell is so bad, you can smell it all the way to Castle Street.”  But as they say, the show must go on, so the crew is quickly rearranging their shoot day.  Missing a day of filming is something that simply just can’t happen!  Good luck, kids!

MartySiuCongratulations are in order for a few peeps!  Yesterday we spilled the beans and let the world know our beautiful Marty Siu landed the extras casting gig for MAX STEEL. IF you would like to work on that feature film, READ MORE NOW  The Red Zone folks are shooting at Indepedence Mall and weather permitting they will be shooting at Maides Park tonight!

tillmanNicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride has named their director.  Congrats to George Tillman, Jr.! Tillman, best known for ‘SOUL FOOD’ (1997) with Vanessa Williams and Vivica Fox as well as ‘MEN OF HONOR’ (2000) with Robert DeNiro and Cuba Gooding Jr. This time around, George will be bringing the love story of “Sophia” and “Luke” to life.  George also spent 3 years ensuring the film INEVITABLE DEFEAT OF MISTER AND PETE written by Michael Starrbury would be  made. It’s debut was at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

michael-cera-john-hawkesAnd finally, congrats and welcome home David Brightbill!  FX’s How & Why just nabbed him from the Charlotte area.  He’s been working on Homeland for the last couple of seasons, but he coming back home to Wilmywood.  He’s been a 1st and 2nd AD on some of shows as far back as One Tree Hill, but he quickly moved up to be a production manager as well as a co-producer.  FX’s How and Why has deemed him UPM for the pilot.  Woo Hoo!  So glad you are back David!

kevin-sizemoreThis Friday, our favorite Domie, Kevin Sizemore will join us on The Sunny Morning Show.   He will be on ABC’s Resurrection this Sunday and guess who else is popping up?  Well, when asked, he said “I think it’s this Sunday.”  LOL.  Remember Reverend Lester Coggins of Under the Dome?  It’s Ned Bellamy.  So we got some Wilmywood love on the Georgia shot show, based on the book The Returned by our Bolton, North Carolina boy Jason Mott.

Wilmywood would like to give a special anniversary shout out to a family owned business that has helps our local talent prepare for film and TV auditions. ACTORS ARSENAL was founded in 2013 by married actor couple Ron and Allie who left L.A. for the opportunities offered here in Wilmington. Ron and Allie are the owners and instructors at Actor’s Arsenal.
538215_334057263377935_963966031_nEvery actor knows that branding yourself and constantly working on craft is important and Actor’s Arsenal is a full service school to help with just that. They offer group classes for beginner and advanced students, audition taping, website design and private coaching. Both Ron and Allie have worked in the entertainment business for many years and with many well known names. Now onto Sleepy Hollow.  My sources are telling me that  offices are slowly opening over the next week as they gear up for season two.  Yesterday, our adorable Sleepy Writers tweeted a pic from the writers room.  Did you spot our new  producer/writer Albert Kim in the back!  He’s pumped to be on the show.

And can we thank Orlando Jones and Tom Mison enough for spreading some North Carolina Love!?  Stars promoting tourism.

Hold on, let me get this straight.  A show films here, brings in a ton a revenue, buys from a lot of local small businesses, create 100s of jobs, and the stars promote tourism, encouraging fans to visit?  Wow, this industry is horrible!  Shut it down immediately! Okay, I’m done. ::::wipes sarcasm from lips:::::

STATUS: Pre-Production. Offices open March 24th. Production begins at the end of April.
PRODUCER: Anthony Bregman, Charlie Kaufman
WRITER/DIRECTOR: Charlie Kaufman
CAST: John Hawkes, Michael Cera, Julia Sarah Stone

Goodman Hesselman (John Hawkes) is a long-lasting minor TV celebrity, the host of a science show for children entitled “How And Why.” He’s been explaining the wonders of the known universe to kids for the last 25 years — and he’s visibly bored with his job and his life; a guy in a rut. A skeptical rationalist who thinks the supernatural is a big load of hooey, Goodman loses his gig, gets dropped to a ratty little market in the middle of nowhere, and tries to start all over again, doing a TV show and working for a much younger boss (Michael Cera). And that’s when the supernatural world has its dark vengeance on Goodman, catching him when he’s at the lowest point in his life, and forcing his grasp of reality to curl and fray and twist and shred — first at the edges, then working in towards the bones.

FX Scouting Locations This Week!

michael-cera-john-hawkesFX will be scouting locations this week for the Michael Cera/John Hawkes pilot, How and Why.  Mark that as the 4th TV production to come into town.  Mark it the 5th if you count Sleepy Hollow since they technically never left.  But FX will be opening offices in two weeks!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – Week In Review, January 18, 2014 (VIDEO)

Lawd! Technical Difficulties, one day late!  Yikes! Sheila Brothers gives you the scoop about the hottest shows and movies filming in Wilmington, NC. Here is a Week in Review from Jan 13 – Jan 18, 2014.

Why do productions come to NC? Ask FX Network Chief or CFO Noble House Entertainment

Why do productions come to North Carolina?  Ask FX chief John Landgraf:

John Landgraf

“Without the incentive, we wouldn’t be there. With it, then it essentially becomes a conversation about geography and topography. And then the location competes and wins on the merits.”  ~ FX Chief John Landgraf

Jeff Hidek from the Star News  grabbed that quote from Landgraf during the TCAs.  Here’s is the complete article that Hunter Ingram put together from the event.  It includes many other quotes you will want to read.

Nick Goundry of The Location Guide writes, “Confirmation of the pilot shoot is clearly good news, but North Carolina’s filming incentive is still set to expire at the end of 2014. If it is not renewed soon, the state’s production industry runs the risk of losing a full season of How & Why to a competitor, should the show get a season order from the network.” READ ARTICLE FROM THE LOCATION GUIDE NOW!

NOBLE

How about we ask Noble House Entertainment.  Is it the locations, the nice people?  What drives them to film in North Carolina?  Donald Driftmeier, chief financial officer for Noble House Entertainment Pictures, a movie production company based in Ontario, brings his projects to NC because…

Every investment is risky,” said Donald Driftmeier. “Each one of our films is a separate business. Not only do you have a theatrical release, but the film can end up on an airline, and it goes on DVD. It’s about mitigating the risk for investors. We find a location like North Carolina that fits and works and is going to be ok for us and still make a profit.”

Now his investor for his latest film, Becker’s Farm. that is in the final phase of pre-production wants not only this movie, but three more as well.  That would be 4 productions that North Carolina can take in from one company.

“For North Carolina, movie and television production means jobs,” Roemmich said.
