The Wilmywood Daily – Week In Review – January 11, 2014 (VIDEO)

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 01/10/2014 C.D. Jackie Burch Moving to Atlanta, More Noms for Sleepy Hollow and more.

Good Morning and Happy Friday!  Now before I get to some fun news, if you are in the film community, especially if you are an actor, this is some breaking news.

Yesterday, Jackie Burch one of our most talented industry people here in Wilmington, announced that effective March 1st, she is moving to Atlanta, GA.  This is a woman we have been so honored to have in our film community as she has an incredible resume that dates back to the Brat Pack.  Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science.  Add at least 50 more titles til we get to the most recent Iron Man 3, The Hunger Games, Arthur Newman, 42, and let alone the films that have not been released yet: Tammy, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One and Two.

Robert Downey JrDid you know that Jackie was the one who gave Robert Downey Jr. his big break casting him in Weird Science?  And it came full circle when she cast IM3.  When Jackie relocated from Los Angeles to Wilmington, NC in 2008, we were so excited to have her here and officially call her our own.  But now, with 4 productions coming here and over 20 going to Georgia, well…

I caught up with her last night and here is what we talked about.

SHEILA:  So tell me, is it true?  Are you really moving to Atlanta?

JACKIE: Yes, however, I am still keeping an office here because I still want to work in Wilmington, but with the film incentives up in the air like they are, there is no work here for me right now.  I already have some projects that are in Atlanta at the moment. And with Pinewood Studios coming. I cannot just sit here waiting around.  I need to go where the work is available.

SHEILA: So you are not completely leaving us.  That’s at least some good news.  Just so you know, Jackie, people love you here, especially the actors in town.  You are responsible for so many of them getting the part!

JACKIE:  Oh, please tell them, I will not forget them. I always consider North Carolina talent for anything that I am casting in Georgia.  We have a lot of talented actors here.  And like I said, I will be available for any project that shoots in North Carolina, even if I am residing in Georgia.  I do that now, even though I currently live in Wilmington, I am casting projects in Atlanta.

SHEILA:  You know you are breaking  my heart right now, right?

JACKIE: (laughs) It’s so sad that I have to make this move.  I am hoping when they vote again this time,  they will do the right thing.  This incentive affects so many people, and not just the crew, but the small businesses, so many of them rely on the film industry to pay the bills.  I hope that they not only extend the incentives, but they get rid of  the expiration.  They need to make the incentives permanent.

I spoke with Jackie this morning and she asked for me to take the picture down, I laughed, cuz she never puts up a pic of herself up anywhere.  Lord, I love this woman!  But while we were chatting, she added:

I am really going to miss the theater in Wilmington.  I’ve cast many of actors right from theater, always trying to discover new talent.  I am very proud of the work they do here.

Jackie will be having a final workshop coming up before she heads out to Georgia.  It will be the weekend of February 8th.  I will keep you posted about all the details.

filmjobsBut back to the conversation.  That is the key, isn’t it? Ending the sunset. Politicians continue to make one HUGE mistake that they just simply cannot process how damaging it is.  They think it’s a good idea to just keep extending the incentive instead of permanently end the sunset once and for all!  And if you are in the industry then you know how BAD that is.  Not as bad a losing it, but, you know, production companies don’t know what to think of us.  Is there an incentive this year?  Well, I am planning my production two years from now, and NC’s incentives are up in the air.  No thank you, I will go to Georgia or Louisiana. The month of May cannot come soon enough. Look, extending the incentives is better than nothing, I agree, but it only puts a band-aid on an open wound.  Unless you stitch it up, it will never heal!  We will be back in crisis mode when we are 24 months away from “renewal” time.  So, let’s get this sunset outta here!  The sooner we do that, the more productions will make plans to film here and we can break the cycle of hesitation from production companies when they think of North Carolina.  We cannot afford to lose more amazing people in the film industry that call North Carolina their home!

TV GUIDE

Howdy! Another freezing morning, but we got lots to chat about that will make us all warm and fuzzy, much like my brain before coffee.  Let’s start off with our adorable dynamic duo Ichabod and Abbie of Sleepy Hollow!  Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison look fabulous on the cover of TV Guide, don’t you think?  And let me just add how much I LOVE the opening to this TV Guide article by Aubry D’Arminio.

“The end is nigh for Sleepy Hollow‘s first season. And it looks extremely…busy. It’s a stinging-cold December morning at Wilmington, North Carolina’s EUE/Screen Gems Studios. In the nearby woods, a stuntwoman wearing a low-cut, corseted frock is being pulled through the air on a thick cord and dropped nose-first onto a safety mat. “Can she be yanked even harder?” director Ken Olin (thirtysomething) asks the crew member at the other end of the rope. Yes, she certainly can.”

Wilmington.  North Carolina.  EUE/Screen Gems.  Crew – So many of my favorite buzz words in the opening paragraph!

READ TV GUIDE’S “Inside Sleepy Hollow’s Shocking Season Finale”

“Sleepy Hollow collects the most tweets per minute of any current Fox show and is the second most popular new series on social media after The Originals, with nearly 1 million fans across Facebook and Twitter alone.”

under-the-dome-cbsNew characters are coming to Chester’s Mill.  from TVLine.com reports not one, not two, but three.   He says Season 2 will introduce three new characters, including:

Sam: a gruff kinda guy who lives in the woods.  The locals call him a “crazy drunk” which to me translates he will have answers to some dilemmas this season.  He is a relative or was once someone close to one of the characters we know well, but they aren’t saying who.

Rebecca: a 30 something teacher.  Big Jim wants her to get a Dome school going, but of course his motivation isn’t higher education.

A “new girl” in town: A very vague and ageless description, but we know that she is “in to” Joe and Norrie, so we can assume she’s a teen.

MTV is so kind.  Now that the North Carolina shot Bad Grandpa is officially available for digital download, they gave us a bonus!  Here’s an exclusive look at one of the film’s many deleted scenes.  A gem, MTV says,  that’s as good as the pranks that made the final cut.  “Bad Grandpa” will be available on Blu-ray and DVD on January 28.

sleepy-hollow1

Goooood Mornin’ Wilmywood!  Let’s kick off the blog this morning with a Sleepy Hollow concern from one of the entertainment bloggers out there in the world.  HW Hill was a little confused about Sleepy Hollow missing an episode, saying, “I guess it didn’t get a full episode order, or it was just meant to be that short.”

No worries, HWHills!  I got your back.  My sources over at Fox set the record straight.

“Fox decided to air them differently.  The Season One order is 13.  It’s always been 13 and they are shooting 13.  We just decided to combine episode 12 and 13 into a 2-hour finale.  In fact, the finale is gonna be epic.  It’s gonna be huge.”

Episode 11 will air January 13th, 2014, 9pm EST and the big finale (Episode 12/13 combo) will air Monday, January 20th beginning at 8pm EST on Fox!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/13/2013 – 3 Wilmywood Shot Flicks Make Success List, Casting call for Top Model and Holiday Parties

Box Office Mojo’s Ray Subers reveals the Top 10 Box Office Success Stories in 2013 as part on IMDb’s Year in Review.  Three Wilmywood shot movies made that list which discusses over-performing blockbusters along with surprise hits:

IM3#1 of course is Iron Man 3 – Ray says, “While Iron Man 3 was the top movie of the year at the domestic box office (over $409 million), the real upside was overseas, where its $806 million haul was more than double that of its predecessor. Worldwide, the movie’s $1.2 billion total ranks fifth all-time. ”

werethemillers#6 We’re the Millers – Ray writes,  “Benefiting from good scheduling and a strong premise, road trip comedy. We’re the Millers got off to a solid start in early August. The movie then held well thanks to strong word-of-mouth, and ultimately became the highest-grossing movie of August 2013. To date, it has earned over $150 million at the domestic box office. ”

ConjuringComing in right behind one of the best comedies of the year is The Conjuring at #7.  This is definitely on the surprise list, surpassing all expectations.  “The Conjuring wrapped up its domestic run with $137.4 million, which made it the top supernatural horror movie in over a decade. ”

Production of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 Responsible for $179.8 Million in Spending, Over 2,000 Jobs in North Carolina

Untitled-1

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 30, 2013

Production of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 Responsible for $179.8 Million in Spending, Over 2,000 Jobs in North Carolina

New economic analysis finds filming had significant economic impact, return on investment in the state

WASHINGTON — A new analysis released today on the economic impact of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 filming in North Carolina finds that the film is responsible for $179.8 million in spending and 2,043 jobs in the state.  The analysis was conducted by MNP LLP and assesses the economic impact of the production filming in North Carolina between December 2011 and December 2012.  The analysis also finds that the production is responsible for $104.1 million in labor income across North Carolina, and that spending associated with the film engaged 719 vendors in 84 communities across the state.

“These findings are just the latest evidence of the economic benefit that film and television production has meant for North Carolina,” said Senator Chris Dodd, Chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America.  “Thanks to a reliable and refundable production incentive, North Carolinians have been able to reap the benefits of direct spending and job creation across the state.  Marvel’s Iron Man 3, like so many productions that choose to shoot in North Carolina, generated hundreds of millions of dollars in spending for local businesses in dozens of communities and thousands of jobs for North Carolina workers.”

Iron Man 3 received $20 million in support through state tax incentives. This investment by the state resulted in the following economic benefits:

  • $8.99 in economic output for every dollar of tax credit received by the production.
  • $6.50 in Gross State Product for every dollar of tax credit received by the production.
  • 102 full-time equivalent positions for every $1 million in tax credit received by the production.
  • $5.20 in labor income for every dollar of tax credit received by the production.

In addition, several of the businesses hired directly by the production have reported the film to have had a significant effect during the filming period. For example, Master Craftsmen Services, a furniture restoration company, reported to WRAL that Iron Man 3 represented ten to fifteen percent of the company’s business the year in which filming occurred, and Tidewater Storage Trailers reported that roughly ten percent of its business was generated by the production of Iron Man 3 in the first six months of 2012.
