A Wilmywood Glance at Mattel’s Max Steel

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL – PARKING LOT – DAY

Sophia drives her blue, rag-top wagon through the packed lot as the sun barrels down.  Suddenly, Max races across her path on his bike.  She slams the brakes and watches him go flying through the bushes.  Sophia jumps out of her vehicle and runs to…

THE SIDE OF PARKING LOT

Sophia sees Max on the ground next to a tree.  She leans over him, her necklace dangling,  sparkling in the sunlight.

MAX’S POV –

Someone leans over him.  His vision blurred.

SOPHIA

“Oh my God!  Oh my God!  Are you okay?”

Still a daze, his eyes begin to focus.  It’s a girl.  A beautiful girl.

END SCENE

Ana Villafane is that beautiful girl starring as Sophia in the upcoming super-hero flick Max Steel.  But this isn’t your typical super-hero movie.  Our hero Max McGrath played by Ben Winchell isn’t coming from a dark past.  He doesn’t right wrongs based on vengeance.  He is unknowingly a superhero from birth and he is out to save his family rather than the world. Max Steel, has been an animated television series for some time now, however this will be the first time we see it come to life in live action on the big screen.

MaxSteel050314_0054

The story revolves around 16 year old Max McGrath who discovers he has a strange electric energy that radiates from him whenever his emotions get the best of him and now it’s getting out of hand. He can’t control them.  This doesn’t help as he is trying to fit in at another new school–where he finds himself attracted to the beautiful and unconventional Sofia (Ana Villafane) and develops a friendship with an old colleague of his dad’s, Dr. Miles Edwards (Andy Garcia).  Perhaps Miles can tell him what his mother Molly (Maria Bello) is unwilling to talk about– what really happened in the accident that killed his dad. As if that is not enough to have on a teenager’s shoulders, Max is most startled by the arrival of a small, crab-like alien named Steel, whose memory may be faulty but who knows one thing for certain: he’s there to protect Max, and he’s been sent by Max’s father.

MaxSteel050314_0076Producer Julia Pistor explains what made her choose Max Steel.

“I was drawn to the Max Steel story. I love super hero stories and I was really compelled by the story of Max and his father. He never knew his father and our film tells the origin of Max and how he connects with him. Not only does he (Max) learns that his father is an alien, but he really connects with him like a father and son. I’m drawn to stories that are family unification stories. I think that’s really important.”

MaxSteel050314_0235That she is.  Julia has a long history with family movies like The Spiderwick Chronicles, Charlotte’s Web and Lemony Snicket to name a few.

Producer Bill Dowd of Dolphin Films is also a fan of super hero movies and he wanted to make sure when Max’s story was told, it would be a film that the whole family would enjoy.

“I’ve been long time friends with Bill, so I know that he’s looking to make films that are a little more character driven and inspirational.” Julia says. “We loved the idea of making a movie that was a little bit outside of the system and a little more homegrown.”

Max Steel also isn’t the typical $100+ million action flick, either.  There will be more of an organic feel to this one which is quite refreshing.  And smart. They have already done quite well gaining pre-sales all over Europe and Southeast Asia, so it seems it should eliminate any financial fear and could possibly pave the way for a Max Steel 2 and who knows perhaps a Max Steel 3. That’s my own personal take on it however, nothing in confirmed along those lines.  The feature is penned by super-hero writer Christopher Yost (Thor: The MaxSteel050314_0218Dark World), directed by Stewart Hendler (H+) and the cast is top-notch. The two leads, Ben Winchell and Ana Villafane are both extremely talented up and coming young actors.  Even though they just met earlier this year, they already have an amazing connection with each other and it shows on screen.

“Ben and I actually met for the first time at the chemistry read. I guess we had chemistry, because here we are!” laughs Ana Villafane. “He is great. There is no wall that needed to break down. He is authentic and hasn’t been tainted. There was no facade or pretending to be ‘cool.’ He was himself from the beginning and we hit it off right away.”

andy_garciaBen Winchell mirrors those exact thoughts about Ana.  She too is the real deal.  The couple will be playing along side two of the most talented and prolific actors we know today.  Andy Garcia being one of them .

“Andy is perfect,” says Julia, “because he can play the warmest, most handsome father figure character, but as we all know from Ocean’s Eleven and The Godfather, he can play a cold and ruthless character. There are not a lot of actors with that range. We (the creative team) are huge Andy Garcia fans. We are excited to get him.”

image

Maria Bello is another. Her range is just as exceptional. From comedy to drama, she can do whatever comes her way.  This time, she plays off her motherly instincts as Max’s mom, Molly.

The film is being shot in Wilmington, NC which is a perfect fit as a location for their needs for such an organic, homegrown feature.

“We were planning production and all producers are drawn to places with tax incentives. We were going on a scout. We were going to go all over: Africa, Canada, Louisiana and Wilmington. Wilmington is the first place we went to on our scout. We got off the plane and went to the (Ideal) cement plant, we looked at houses for Max and we called LA and said, ‘We’re shooting it here.’ We didn’t evaluate any other place. Of course the tax incentives are fantastic! It’s so gorgeous here. The weather and the people are great. The locations are so diverse. The crew is so strong and experienced and so kind. It was just done.”

IdealCementThe Ideal Cement plant (also called the Roanoke Cement plant) has been transformed into Max Steel Headquarters and they expect a 17 day shoot for this location.  If you follow director Stewart Hendler (@stewarthendler) on Twitter, you have already seen what an incredible job the construction crew and set designers have done.  The plant closed many years ago, but it continues to be a favorite and prime location for many feature films and television shows including Iron Man 3Revolution, Under the Dome, as well as The Crow and even Super Mario Bros.

“My husband and I call each other nicknames from Mario Bros., Julia laughs.  “When I heard that Mario Bros was shot there, I thought, ‘This is fantastic!’ I tease him and call him Goomba. I feel like we should come here for our anniversary!”

Other locations include Hoggard High School, Downtown Wilmington and some private houses in Wilmington as well.

MaxSteel050314_0328Ana is definitely glad they chose Wilmington as the location and she actually fell in love with the town and she didn’t even know it. “I’ve seen Natalie Martinez’s (Under The Dome/ Secrets and Lies) photos on social media and she is paddle boarding and going to great little cafe’s. I figured she was sharing vacation photos from Puerto Rico or something. I get here and realize she was in Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach!”  There is so much space and it’s all lush and green. There is a very laid back feeling, but between the beach and the downtown nightlife it’s not boring. I’m really excited to explore.”

Expect to see Mattel’s first super hero flick in theaters in January, 2015.

Yesterday it was a mad house at not only the Fox Upfronts but at the Fox Fan Fronts! Twitter was on fandom fire especially when our Sleepy Hollow cast arrived. Then, something else caught the eyes of Ringmany fans.  Is that a ring on Tom Mison’s left hand?  Yes, indeed it is!  According to multiple sources, Tom Mison married his love Charlotte Coy in a small and private ceremony about a month ago.  So, congrats to the gorgeous couple!

Today, we have the Upfronts for ABC at 4pm EST.  Got any favorite shows on that network?  Secrets and Lies begins production in July from what I’ve been hearing, they will be a mid-season pick-up.tscc3

Under the Dome is shooting all over the place today including Winnabow as well as all of their sound stages.  Max Steel is back at a private location on Middlesound Loop Road.

MLC_EisnerBig Congrats to our local comic book shop, Memory Lane Comics!  They were just nominated for an Eisner Award – the 2014 Will Eisner “Spirit of Comics” Retailer Award. The awards will be given out during this year’s San Diego Comic Con in July.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 05/12/2014 The Upfronts, Sleepy Hollow, The Heart, Secrets and Lies, Max Steel

Goood Monday morning!  Wow, so much has been announced since Friday and lots of action from the big networks begin today.

UPFRONTSYep, it’s all about the Upfronts!  Now, they already let a few cats out of the bag as they do from time to time before their big presentations.

According to Nellie over at Deadline, Red Zone is reportedly not getting picked up by CBS.  We will know more this week, possibly today.  If you remember, the Nikki Toscano pilot was shot for CBS by NBC/Universal, so they still have the opportunity to shop it elsewhere.   Whether they do or not, is yet to be known.

sleepy hollow 2

And speaking of upfronts our Sleepyheads are in New York as we speak because today is the day for Fox as well as NBC.  Orlando Jones, Katie Winter, John Noble, Lyndie Greenwood, Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie are all in attendance.  This we already know: On Monday nights, the new Batman prequel Gotham will take over the 8pm time slot, followed by the second season of Sleepy Hollow at 9pm. Now we wait on the premiere date in September.  We do know that there will be 18 episodes of monster fun this season. Now how about a date please 🙂   Here’s the schedule:

May 12 , 2014
NBC 11am – Javits Center
Fox 4pm – Beacon Theatre

May 13, 2014
ABC – 4pm  -Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center

May 14, 2014
CBS 4pm –  Carnegie Hall

SecretsLies_CastAnd even though ABC’s Upfronts aren’t until tomorrow, the network made the announcement that Secrets and Lies has been picked up.   And Hunter over at the Star News got the scoop, they are indeed coming back to Wilmington.  So, get ready!  Offices will reopen in just a few weeks.  They begin production in July.  Months ago they said they were looking at an October premiere, now we find out if they will stick to that plan!

In sad news, it’s R.I.P. to Revolution.  After moving to Austin, TX for season 2, they got the boot.  The power will not be restored.

Kristen WiigWe’ve been waiting patiently for news to come out about The Heart starring Kristen Wiig.  If you remember they had a deadline over a week ago to lower the budget or pick up some more financiers in order to make the comedy happen.  Indian Paintbrush Pictures should be telling us something this week.   I will keep you posted.

MaxSteel050314_0218Congrats to Mattel and Dolphin Films! It looks like their sales group, IM Global has gotten Max Steel pre-sales all over most of Europe and Southeast Asia.  In fact they are so popular, I’ve heard the casting department has gotten calls from Taiwan begging to be in the movie, saying they would fly in and work for free.  Isn’t that crazy!

Under the Dome is at Greenfield Lake Park (main playground area) Union Station and N 4th.  Max Steel is off today.  Sleepy Hollow is off due to the Upfronts.

Martha De Laurentiis spent her weekend in Wrightsville Beach this weekend.  It was so nice to know she still loves this town considering what she helped build here with Dino.  I know she still has a house here, now if we can get this lovely lady to bring us Hannibal, everything will be just fine 🙂

The Wilmywood Daily – 05/09/2014 The Upfronts, Firestarter, The Crow, Locations today and more.

We made it to the weekend! Woo Hoo!!  First, let me remind you of the excitement that is to come next week.  The Upfronts!  In case you don’t know, the Upfronts are scheduled presentations from all the networks.  Normally, it is during this time (8 weeks), we find out about shows that will get picked up, special sneak peeks of shows currently in production and they also give out premiere dates.

UPFRONTS The major networks will be presenting next week.  What will we find out?  Well, probably the fate of ABC’s Secrets and Lies (READ DEADLINE’S TAKE ON ABC PILOTS) that shot here back in February as well as Red Zone, now called Field of Play (although I heard they will probably head back to LA if it gets picked up).  We are also waiting on a premiere date for Sleepy Hollow.  So get ready!  It’s gonna be fun!  We won’t know anything about How and Why for at least another month, but it looks very promising!

I wanted to thank Edward Martin for writing an incredible article in Business NC Magazine!  He fairly wrote about both sides of the issue of NC Film Incentives and it was beautifully written.  If you find a copy, pick up a few!

Now, where will our productions be shooting around town today?

Under the Dome will be playing around at Greenfield Lake Park and on Wellesley Place and Max Steel will be off Middle Sound Loop Rd. Sleepy Hollow will be shooting later today in Castle Hayne again and The Sin Seer is at an undisclosed location.

Max-SteelMax Steel stole the hearts of many and closed some pre-sales throughout most of Europe as well as Asia! We’re talkin’ Germany, France, Italy, Russia and all over Southeast Asia, they all want some of the Steel action!  Congrats already to the Wilmywood folks working so hard on this fun superhero flick!

BrettCullen

Oh and guess what I heard!  Our awesome Brett Cullen who was here last year for Riverguard, is back in town!  Now rumor has it he will be making an appearance on Under the Dome!  We will see if the trades pick that up or if I can do some some digging, I will tell more as soon as I know! If this is true, I can’t wait to hug him!  LOVE this guy!

imageSunday is a very special day in Wilmywood movie history. On May 11, 1984 a very important film was released. That movie was Stephen King’s Firestarter. The film starred a young Drew Barrymore, David Keith and Heather Locklear. It’s a story of a young couple who undergo testing as part of a paid medical experiment. The experiment leaves the couple with telekinetic powers and the child the convince together is born with a “pyro kinetic” ability meaning the child can start fires with her mind. With that power, the government seeks her out and her family helps to keep her safe as she learns that fear and anger control the environment around her.

This movie is monumental in Wilmywood’s history as it is often referred to as the movie that “put us on the map” as a studio town 30 years ago. It all started with Frank Capra, Jr. spotting Orton Plantation on the cover of Southern Accents Magazine while he was searching for the ultimate location for the horror flick.  So, we happened to luck out because where ever that home was, that’s where they were gonna shoot it.  Crew members actually built a replica of the exterior of the plantation about one mile down the road.  Why?  So they could set it on fire and blow it up, of course. Other locations include the Pender County Courthouse, Isabel Holmes Bridge,  and Wilmington’s 1st Presbyterian Church.  This movie was when Wilmywood fell in love with Mr. Stephen King and (seemingly) he with us.

tscc3

We also have another NC film which is reaching its 20 year mark.. The same day only ten years after Firestarter was released, The Crow was released as well. The Crow made it’s way from the sound stages of LA to NC and stars Brandon Lee, son of martial arts legend, Bruce Lee. The film is a story of a man who returns from death to seek revenge for the death of his would-be bride and himself. Some of the film’s most memorable scenes were done at the I deal Cement plant (where Max Steel and Under the Dome is shooting now) as well as downtown Wilmington.  But most of it was filmed at Carolco Studios, which we know now to be EUE/Screen Gems.  Sadly, we lost Brandon during the course of filming, but we in Wilmywood are forever grateful for the art he brought into out town twenty years ago.

Happy anniversary to two Wilmywood movies that mean very much to out film community.

20301 Mail Service Center
Raleigh, NC 27699-0301

Dear Governor McCrory:

My name is Dale Williams and I am a twenty-five year employee of the North Carolina film and television industry.  I am currently employed as a Production Manager on a major network television series in the Wilmington region.

Today, there are seven productions in the Wilmington area: two television series, one television pilot, and four feature films.  Additionally, other projects are shooting in the Charlotte region while more are scouting locations in other parts of the State as well.  The film and television industry in North Carolina is doing well.  However, with the film incentive set to expire in eight months, all of these current clients will not consider additional business in our State beyond December 31.  As you might imagine, this is of great concern to approximately four thousand residents of our State who are full time workers in this industry.

On behalf of the film workers in the Wilmington region, I am respectfully requesting an opportunity for the workers to meet with you in Wilmington or Raleigh to discuss their future in our State.  I look forward to your response.

Dale Williams
Unit Production Manager

Dale, you are so loved in this town!  Thank you for leading the way!  tscc3Also, I posted an article earlier this morning from a station owner in Greensboro who attended the rally.

“I was totally amazed at the outpouring of community support at the Wilmington Film Rally. I have covered rallies for over 20 years and never seen the togetherness of the film workers and the local government leaders at any event.”  READ MORE NOW

The festival ran May 1-4, 2014 here in Wilmington and the awards ceremony was held on Sunday in the Beam Room of Front Street Brewery. At said ceremony there were tons of filmmakers and indiefilm lovers from all over. Taking home one award was actor/producer/Tim Guinee. Tim’s film, ‘One Armed Man’ won Best Short. You know Wilmywood loves them some Tim Guinee. He was here before the festival to shoot for the FX pilot, How and Why but had to leave for the festival itself.

The award honors those who have an impact in the local film community. The winners (yes, there were two) were Peggy Farrell and Jeff Goodwin. Peggy is an Emmy award winning costume designer and Jeff specializes in FX and make-up. Congratulations to everyone who participated and were nominated!

HilarieLast night, I posted a letter that One Tree Hills Hilarie Burton shared with me to pass along to you. Although she no longer lives here, North Carolina and the film crew will always be in her heart.

To the North Carolina voters and legislators,
Please forgive me for not being able to attend this weekend’s film rally. I’m already signed up to attend the Olevolos2014 fundraiser for a One Tree Hill castmate – Bryan Greenberg – up in NYC. But I wanted to send along a message of support for the NC Film community as the State’s current incentive is up for discussion.  READ LETTER NOW
