THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/16/2013 Wilmywood Holiday flicks, PCAs, Nicolas Sparks and more.

Wilmywood Shot Christmas Movie of the Day

We’ve had a few holiday movies pass through this fabulous city, so I thought I would share a few with you this week!  Today, we feature The Angel Doll:  Shot in 2000 in Wilmington, NC as well as Memphis, TN (at St. Jude), this holiday movie stars our beloved Pat Hingle, Betsy Brantley, Beatrice Bush and Nick Searcy.  It’s the story of two small town boys from different sides of the tracks: 1950’s childhood and self-redemption. Young “Whitey” Black (so called because of a tuft of blanched hair on the left side of his head) lives in poverty with his single mother and ailing, four-year old sister, Sandy. Just across town, young Jerry Barlow lives the advantages of a middle class lifestyle with both parents and his younger brother. When mischief casts Whitey and Jerry into a shared paper route, Jerry quickly learns of Whitey’s desire to buy his sister an angel doll for Christmas. Even though no such dolls exist in their hometown, Whitey, Jerry and a host of colorful characters set out in search of Sandy’s gift. Along the way, reversals of fortune, theft, prejudice and, ultimately, the boy’s friendship opens their eyes to the vastness of the small town around them.

201110-the-best-of-meLate Friday morning, I broke the news that DiNovi Pictures along with Nicolas Sparks is taking “The Best of Me” to New Orleans. Even though just 2 months ago they were still keeping Wilmington in mind, as Nicolas Sparks is a North Carolina native, they made the switch to Louisiana soon after.  No word about the possibility of any footage being shot here at all. The Production Weekly states they begin production in March. If anything changes, I will let you know.

BREAKING: Nicolas Sparks Flick Heads to the Crescent City

After all the waiting and checking in with department heads, it looks like DiNovi Pictures along with Nicolas Sparks is taking “The Best of Me” to New Orleans.  No word about the possibility of any footage being shot here at all.  The Production Weekly states they begin production in March.   If anything changes, I will let you know.

Nothing has been said as to why this film is heading to the deep South, but I can think of a few reasons.  If you are thinking film incentives, let me shed some light on what Louisiana has to offer.  According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Lousisiana  has a 30 percent transferable credit for qualified applicants for total in-state expenditures related to the production of a motion picture.  An additional 5 percent labor tax credit can be earned on the payroll of Louisiana residents who are employed by a state-certified motion picture production. The tax credits are fully transferable and the state has no limit to the amount of tax credits that can be earned by a single production.

A sad day for North Carolina indeed.
