Finally, I gotta say that WECT’s Justin Smith did a great job on this story including his follow up.  It blows my minds how some of the people in the highest positions are absolutely clueless when it comes to the film industry, an industry that is one of the top 10 largest in our state.

“We must educate the state for the sake of the slate!” ~ The Wilmywood Daily

1514995_524155091025820_1845409132_nRichard Lindenmuth, who is interim CEO of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, made some comments, that A) put many NC Film supporters in a panic and B) downright pissed those supporters off.  I think the top comment that put so many in a state of bafflement, irritation, fury, anger, wrath, outrage, indignation, temper, spleen, resentment, annoyance, vexation, displeasure.  Read this statement then pick the word that best suits you!

“We have a beautiful landscape. That’s a wonderful incentive. We have friendly people,” he said. “We’ve got lots of good reasons why people should be here. And at the end of the day, if it’s only a dollar here, a dollar there for an incentive, I don’t think that’s a make or break for a reason why we would be in North Carolina.”

Yeeaaahhhhhh….

Now after the heat flushes away from your face and you take a deep breath, please know, he does NOT have the final say when it comes to incentives, our politicians do.  So, don’t panic.  We did not lose the war.  It’s just an obstacle that we will not let stand in our way.  It’s a sign that we need to do whatever we can to educate this man (and our legislators across the state). When the impact study comes out, which will be soon, it will help him understand just how much film brings to this state, for the people of this state. He made some other comments you need to read as well (I have the link below). And for the love of God, someone please explain to this man these two things.

1) Locations and nice people don’t bring filmmakers to our state.  That was so 15 years ago. Sure, it helps, but that is not the primary reason why they come anymore.  We are competing with 44 others states let alone Canada and the UK.  Prod Cos send their accountants first, not location scouts. SOMEONE EMAIL HIM THIS: So Why does North Carolina need film incentives anyway?

2) Contracted workers that work in the film industry in NC, LIVE HERE!  Only a small percentage, come and go.  And that small percentage spends money in our state.

READ THE ARTICLES FROM WECT!  Great job Justin!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 01/10/2014 C.D. Jackie Burch Moving to Atlanta, More Noms for Sleepy Hollow and more.

Good Morning and Happy Friday!  Now before I get to some fun news, if you are in the film community, especially if you are an actor, this is some breaking news.

Yesterday, Jackie Burch one of our most talented industry people here in Wilmington, announced that effective March 1st, she is moving to Atlanta, GA.  This is a woman we have been so honored to have in our film community as she has an incredible resume that dates back to the Brat Pack.  Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science.  Add at least 50 more titles til we get to the most recent Iron Man 3, The Hunger Games, Arthur Newman, 42, and let alone the films that have not been released yet: Tammy, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One and Two.

Robert Downey JrDid you know that Jackie was the one who gave Robert Downey Jr. his big break casting him in Weird Science?  And it came full circle when she cast IM3.  When Jackie relocated from Los Angeles to Wilmington, NC in 2008, we were so excited to have her here and officially call her our own.  But now, with 4 productions coming here and over 20 going to Georgia, well…

I caught up with her last night and here is what we talked about.

SHEILA:  So tell me, is it true?  Are you really moving to Atlanta?

JACKIE: Yes, however, I am still keeping an office here because I still want to work in Wilmington, but with the film incentives up in the air like they are, there is no work here for me right now.  I already have some projects that are in Atlanta at the moment. And with Pinewood Studios coming. I cannot just sit here waiting around.  I need to go where the work is available.

SHEILA: So you are not completely leaving us.  That’s at least some good news.  Just so you know, Jackie, people love you here, especially the actors in town.  You are responsible for so many of them getting the part!

JACKIE:  Oh, please tell them, I will not forget them. I always consider North Carolina talent for anything that I am casting in Georgia.  We have a lot of talented actors here.  And like I said, I will be available for any project that shoots in North Carolina, even if I am residing in Georgia.  I do that now, even though I currently live in Wilmington, I am casting projects in Atlanta.

SHEILA:  You know you are breaking  my heart right now, right?

JACKIE: (laughs) It’s so sad that I have to make this move.  I am hoping when they vote again this time,  they will do the right thing.  This incentive affects so many people, and not just the crew, but the small businesses, so many of them rely on the film industry to pay the bills.  I hope that they not only extend the incentives, but they get rid of  the expiration.  They need to make the incentives permanent.

I spoke with Jackie this morning and she asked for me to take the picture down, I laughed, cuz she never puts up a pic of herself up anywhere.  Lord, I love this woman!  But while we were chatting, she added:

I am really going to miss the theater in Wilmington.  I’ve cast many of actors right from theater, always trying to discover new talent.  I am very proud of the work they do here.

Jackie will be having a final workshop coming up before she heads out to Georgia.  It will be the weekend of February 8th.  I will keep you posted about all the details.

filmjobsBut back to the conversation.  That is the key, isn’t it? Ending the sunset. Politicians continue to make one HUGE mistake that they just simply cannot process how damaging it is.  They think it’s a good idea to just keep extending the incentive instead of permanently end the sunset once and for all!  And if you are in the industry then you know how BAD that is.  Not as bad a losing it, but, you know, production companies don’t know what to think of us.  Is there an incentive this year?  Well, I am planning my production two years from now, and NC’s incentives are up in the air.  No thank you, I will go to Georgia or Louisiana. The month of May cannot come soon enough. Look, extending the incentives is better than nothing, I agree, but it only puts a band-aid on an open wound.  Unless you stitch it up, it will never heal!  We will be back in crisis mode when we are 24 months away from “renewal” time.  So, let’s get this sunset outta here!  The sooner we do that, the more productions will make plans to film here and we can break the cycle of hesitation from production companies when they think of North Carolina.  We cannot afford to lose more amazing people in the film industry that call North Carolina their home!

Also, it wasn’t included in the live award show, but we can tell you Homeland nabbed a PCA for Favorite Premium Cable TV Show.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 01/08/2014 TV Guide Cover, Bad Grandpa Deleted Scenes, Hank and Jed, PCAs and Much More!

TV GUIDE

Howdy! Another freezing morning, but we got lots to chat about that will make us all warm and fuzzy, much like my brain before coffee.  Let’s start off with our adorable dynamic duo Ichabod and Abbie of Sleepy Hollow!  Nicole Beharie and Tom Mison look fabulous on the cover of TV Guide, don’t you think?  And let me just add how much I LOVE the opening to this TV Guide article by Aubry D’Arminio.

“The end is nigh for Sleepy Hollow‘s first season. And it looks extremely…busy. It’s a stinging-cold December morning at Wilmington, North Carolina’s EUE/Screen Gems Studios. In the nearby woods, a stuntwoman wearing a low-cut, corseted frock is being pulled through the air on a thick cord and dropped nose-first onto a safety mat. “Can she be yanked even harder?” director Ken Olin (thirtysomething) asks the crew member at the other end of the rope. Yes, she certainly can.”

Wilmington.  North Carolina.  EUE/Screen Gems.  Crew – So many of my favorite buzz words in the opening paragraph!

READ TV GUIDE’S “Inside Sleepy Hollow’s Shocking Season Finale”

“Sleepy Hollow collects the most tweets per minute of any current Fox show and is the second most popular new series on social media after The Originals, with nearly 1 million fans across Facebook and Twitter alone.”

under-the-dome-cbsNew characters are coming to Chester’s Mill.  from TVLine.com reports not one, not two, but three.   He says Season 2 will introduce three new characters, including:

Sam: a gruff kinda guy who lives in the woods.  The locals call him a “crazy drunk” which to me translates he will have answers to some dilemmas this season.  He is a relative or was once someone close to one of the characters we know well, but they aren’t saying who.

Rebecca: a 30 something teacher.  Big Jim wants her to get a Dome school going, but of course his motivation isn’t higher education.

A “new girl” in town: A very vague and ageless description, but we know that she is “in to” Joe and Norrie, so we can assume she’s a teen.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/30/2013 Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow, Wilmywood Flicks Most Lucrative 2013

Good Morning and Happy Monday to ya!  A slew of praise happening as we finish out the year.  So, let’s continue that trend!  A lot of people were talking about this over the weekend. It wasn’t the top grossing movies, but the most successful ones that got the most bang for their buck and North Carolina has 4 on the list, three of which were shot right here in Wilmywood.  Here are the top 9 most lucrative movies of 2013, according to The Wrap: TheWrap - SuccessSo congrats to the cast and crew of: The Conjuring, Bad Grandpa, We’re the Millers and IM3!  Don’t know what ROI means?  It’s Return Of Investment.  The Wrap explains it in simple terms:

To calculate ROI for a movie, you take how much it grossed, subtract how much it cost and then divide that figure by how much it cost. For example, “Insidious: Chapter 2″ cost $5 million to make. It grossed $160.4 million. So here’s how we did it: $160.4M- $5M = $155.4M. $155.4M/$5M = 31.1.

I know stories similar to this one have already come out, but when our shows get kudos, you deserve to know. The Global Dispatch reports that due to Amazon’s $700,000 per episode buy,  it made the show profitable before it even aired. (The Amazon licensing deal partnership along with international rights made “Under the Dome” an insanely profitable enterprise, again, before it even aired. ) Because of these factors, the UTD team had less stress with how they crafted the show. Rachelle LeFevre said it best:

“There wasn’t as much pressure,” The CBS execs “were able to make big, ballsy decisions as a result, and success is what comes from that.”

Of course it didn’t hurt that the show was an instant hit.  It was the most watched summer series in more than twenty years.  Nielsen tallied up the live viewing as well as the DVR numbers and estimated that the show averaged 15+million viewers.  Amazon picked up season two, 9 months before it will air, 6 months before filming begins on season two.  That Amazon will continue with the same kind of licensing deal, exclusive domain for the online streaming of the episodes four days after they air.   READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE NOW!

SHWitchesNow onto our other successful television show that has made its home here in Wilmywood. Laurel Brown (@DocBrown_TVdid a great piece as part of Zap2It‘s Year in Review.  It was definitely the Year of the Witch. Nicole Beharie also said good-bye over the weekend as well.  It looks like today just might be the last day of filming the EPIC season finale! Well, that’s the plan anyway! And sorry, I cannot reveal who is left filming.  Wouldn’t wanna spoil the finale for ya!  They never shoot in sequential order anyway, but I’d rather not accidentally give anything away.  We will just have to wait until January 20th to see who is left standing!1016242_434988879942442_1440392906_n

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY 12/26/2013 – Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow and More.

I would like to thank FanShare.com for siting my interview with Colin Ford on the set of Under the Dome in their article from December 23rd.  The article states that Colin Ford is definitely one “young actor to watch.”  We agree Fanshare!  Thanks for posting.

According to TV Canada, their “Top Draws in Canada in 2013”  include Under the Dome, putting them in the top 5, eh?

The Amazing Race Canada was the top draw, with an average audience of 3.5 million. The Big Bang Theory was second, with 3 million viewers, and The Amazing Race 22 and 23 third with 2.5 million viewers. Under the Dome (2.43 million) and Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D(2.41 million) round out the top 5.

I thought this letter from “Ichabod Crane” aka @NoFirstIShotHim that Nick Gonzalez retweeted was quite wonderful.  Another lovely letter of thanks to the cast and crew of Sleepy Hollow.

Now is the time to watch back to back episodes of Sleepy Hollow, this season’s hottest new show! Binge baby Binge!  From the pilot to episode 10, watch them all  on FOX on Demand, FOX.com & FOXNOW before it returns in January with all-new episodes.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/20/2013 Another Movie for NC, Eric Laden, Encore’s Best Of and More!

gold45revolverWriter/Producer Elliot McGucken is taking his award winning screenplay, “The Legend of McCoy Mountain & The Gold 45 Revolver” to the silver screen, and my sources tell me as it stands, they will be shooting this flick in LA, New York and North Carolina.  I am still waiting to hear back on exactly where in NC they will be filming.  Let’s hope their plans don’t change! The movie is about Mary McCoy and her boyfriend who head on up McCoy Mountain to film the ghost of Civil War abolitionist Johnny Ranger McCoy for Mary’s Sundance documentary.  They end up finding out firsthand if Johnny’s Gold 45 Revolver really does fire lightning in the hands of heroes willing to give that last, full-measure of devotion.  Look for this production to start up in the Spring.

Remember the indie flick Riverguard that shot here this past summer?  Eric Ladin, the lead in the Wilmywood shot movie has been cast as a regular in The Brink, HBO’s pilot directed by Jay Roach from a script by Roberto Benabib and Kim Benabib and exec produced by Jerry Weintraub. The Brink is an epic dark comedy focusing on a geopolitical crisis and its effect on three disparate and desperate men: U.S. Secretary of State Walter Hollander (Tim Robbins); Alex Coppins (Jack Black), a lowly Foreign Service officer; and Zeke Callahan (Pablo Schreiber), an ace Navy fighter pilot. Ladin will play Lieutenant Glenn Taylor, Callahan’s ace wingman.

donpayneSimpsonsOur buddy Jeff Hidek from the Star News picked up on this tribute.  This past Sunday’s episode of The Simpsons honored one of our legends, Don Payne, who passed away this year.   This episode was the last one written by the New Hanover High School grad and you can see his animated angelic image in the opening credits.  READ THE ARTICLE NOW.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/19/2013 Letters to the Gov’na, Sleepy Hollow Not Done Yet and More!

Hey!  Happy Thursday!  Hope you are in the Holiday spirit.  Tis the season for giving back!  I have an idea for you.  Here’s a way you can help the community, and well, the state for that matter!

euesgsThe lovely Susan Dosier who does PR for Screen Gems Studios put out a blog post yesterday asking you for a small favor that will only take 5 minutes of your time! As you know, a couple of days ago, the Gov sent out a press release and made this statement:

“In addition to our state’s beauty, we’ve developed the workforce and artists that make North Carolina an ideal place to produce quality projects efficiently.”

Now is the time to keep the support strong and thank McCrory for his actions, letting him know we agree.  Susan said in her blog, “Please ask your colleagues, friends and family to send a note of appreciation directly to Governor McCrory’s press office before the end of the year.”  SEE DETAILS NOW  Seriously, 5 minutes of your time will help greatly!

Sleepy Hollow of course is one of our favorite shows, but it’s getting kudos from more than just the locals!  WECT sites a Time Magazine writer as a fan of the show.  James Poniewozik puts Sleepy Hollow on his top 10 list.

banner-tunedinBut James isn’t alone.  The good folks at Tom-Mison.com has scoured the web to find more kudos for the show and Tom Mison himself.  Lists from TV GuideTelevision Without Pity, HitFix, Buddy TV and Newsday

For those who have a “thing” for locations, Jonathan Spiers of The Port City Daily wrote a nice little piece on what Sleepy Hollow uses as an exterior for the police station:  Our historic NHC courthouse on S 3rd St.  READ ARTICLE NOW.

sh_crewHollywood pretty much shuts down by the 2nd week of December, but not the folks of Sleepy Hollow.  They were hoping to wrap Season One by the weekend but some are saying they don’t know if they will even be done by Christmas.   The NC Film Crew along with the cast need a Christmas Bonus!  Are ya listening Fox?  The Sleepy folks are shooting on the lot today, then they “head” to the Bellevue Cemetery for the attack at the graveyard scene.  Looks like they are pullin’ an all-nighter…again.
