Normally we know who is coming into town as they are filming here for either a feature film or television show.  But sometimes we get a surprise or two.  Like Michael Phelps, for example, who is spotted in Wrightsville Beach from time to time because of his girlfriend Win McMurry‘s ties to Wilmington.  Others include Alec Baldwin, Al Gore and the most recent Michael Strahan.  He wasn’t here for a shoot unless you are talkin’ about hoops.  He was here for personal reasons this weekend; to attend a basketball game.  His twins live here.  He also spent some time at Monty’s Home’s Pet Expo last weekend.  It was great to hear him talk about Wilmington on Live! with Kelly and Michael. WATCH NOW

Now this weekend, we will see another star, not for TV or Film production but for an appearance at the Wilmington Home Show.  And if you are an HGTV/DIY fan, you know this guy.  And the ladies LOVE him. On a personal note, he hosts one of my favorite HGTV shows, “Yard Crashers.”  Now, to find out if he does indeed have any ties here to Wilmington.  Here’s the deets if you would like to meet the hotness that is Ahmed Hassan. Stolen from the Wilmington Home Show‘s web site:

Meet Ahmed Hassan — Host of HGTV & DIY Network’s “Yard Crashers” & “Blog Cabin”

Turn your outdoor oasis dreams into a reality!

You’ve seen him on HGTV & DIY Network’s “Yard Crashers” & “Blog Cabin” – Now don’t miss your chance to meet the one and only Ahmed Hassan. Ahmed’s expertise in landscaping, horticulture and soil science has made him one of the most hotly sought-after landscapers and gardening consultants by homeowners and businesses alike. That’s no surprise: Ahmed’s been digging in the dirt – and loving every minute of it – since he was ten years old.

Meet Ahmed at The Lifestyle Stage as he shares his amazing ideas for turning your outdoor oasis dreams into a reality! He will be appearing Saturday at 12:00 PM & 4:00 PM, and on Sunday at 11:00 AM & 2:00 PM at the Wilmington Home Show which will be held at the Wilmington Convention Center.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 02/18/2014 Doctors helping NC Crew Members, Orlando’s 10,000th Tweet and more.

Howdy and happy Tuesday! Boy, things are really gonna heat up this week as I am waiting on the green light to open my big old mouth! In the meantime, here’s a few things I can tell you!
Stage8DR. CRANE TO THE RESCUE!  ATTENTION NC FILM CAST/CREW MEMBERS!  I’ve been speaking to a lot of crew members and the one thing they have in common is when they are back on a show, their schedule does not allow for doctor visits because they work 12-16 hours a day.  Most doctor offices do not have expanded hours.  Soooo, I have a few friends that are some of the best physicians and specialists in town and they have responded to your needs.

adermBANNERDr. Jonathan Crane along with his fabulous specialists from Atlantic Dermatology (now DERM ONE) will be opening their doors for you and your family members on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm, beginning March 1st.  The doors are open for everyone, but I just wanted you to know they really understand your needs when it comes to your busy schedule.  YOU were on the minds when they finalized their decision. LISTEN TO DR CRANE NOW.  He says nice things about ya crew! I am still waiting on a couple more doctors to see who else is coming aboard for ya!

Steve_ProutyYesterday, we watched the Oscar Nominees roll in and two North Carolina got recognized. We expected Iron Man 3 to get a nom, and it did for Visual Effects. But our jaws dropped when we saw the next one. After all, when do you ever see a comedy EVER get a nomination at the Oscars? It’s a rare occurrence. But hey, we’ll take it! So HUGE congratulations to Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa! The Hair and Makeup department got the nomination! Very well deserved! Johnny Knoxville looked amazing! Makeup artist Steve Prouty said in a statement:

“I’m very proud of having been a part of this film,” Prouty said. “We worked very hard each day to help bring Irving Zisman to life and are eternally grateful to have worked with someone like Johnny Knoxville. He is a true talent.”

Finally, I gotta say that WECT’s Justin Smith did a great job on this story including his follow up.  It blows my minds how some of the people in the highest positions are absolutely clueless when it comes to the film industry, an industry that is one of the top 10 largest in our state.

“We must educate the state for the sake of the slate!” ~ The Wilmywood Daily

1514995_524155091025820_1845409132_nRichard Lindenmuth, who is interim CEO of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina, made some comments, that A) put many NC Film supporters in a panic and B) downright pissed those supporters off.  I think the top comment that put so many in a state of bafflement, irritation, fury, anger, wrath, outrage, indignation, temper, spleen, resentment, annoyance, vexation, displeasure.  Read this statement then pick the word that best suits you!

“We have a beautiful landscape. That’s a wonderful incentive. We have friendly people,” he said. “We’ve got lots of good reasons why people should be here. And at the end of the day, if it’s only a dollar here, a dollar there for an incentive, I don’t think that’s a make or break for a reason why we would be in North Carolina.”

Yeeaaahhhhhh….

Now after the heat flushes away from your face and you take a deep breath, please know, he does NOT have the final say when it comes to incentives, our politicians do.  So, don’t panic.  We did not lose the war.  It’s just an obstacle that we will not let stand in our way.  It’s a sign that we need to do whatever we can to educate this man (and our legislators across the state). When the impact study comes out, which will be soon, it will help him understand just how much film brings to this state, for the people of this state. He made some other comments you need to read as well (I have the link below). And for the love of God, someone please explain to this man these two things.

1) Locations and nice people don’t bring filmmakers to our state.  That was so 15 years ago. Sure, it helps, but that is not the primary reason why they come anymore.  We are competing with 44 others states let alone Canada and the UK.  Prod Cos send their accountants first, not location scouts. SOMEONE EMAIL HIM THIS: So Why does North Carolina need film incentives anyway?

2) Contracted workers that work in the film industry in NC, LIVE HERE!  Only a small percentage, come and go.  And that small percentage spends money in our state.

READ THE ARTICLES FROM WECT!  Great job Justin!

A Sleepy Hollow Christmas

Sleepy-Hollow-Title

LISTEN NOW VIA PODCAST

TO THE CAST AND CREW OF SLEEPY HOLLOW:

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the lot,
creatures still stirring, til every scene was shot.
The horsemen galloped to the cemetery with care,
in hopes that Ichobod Crane soon would be there.

The film crew wished they were all snug in their beds,
while visions of a day off danced in their heads.
And Alexis in her ‘kerchief, and Darwin in his cap,
just knew this Christmas, there’d be no long winter’s nap.

On the roof of Stage 10, the crew heard such a clatter,
Jefferson yelled out, “Hey, fly out that ladder!”
Away to the window for a set dec redo,
Sullivan opened the shutter, “Hey look, it’s unit two.”

The moon was up, the cast and crew ready,
“Let’s do this!” exclaimed DP John Leonetti.
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
but Headless himself and an ax quite near.

The shot was well done, on to wardrobe real quick,
Geneveive gets them to Screen Gems in a fast lick!
More rapid than eagles, his coursers they came,
Ken Olin whistled and shouted and called them by name:

“Now Mison! Now Beharie!
Now, Gonzalez and Cho!
On, Winter! On, Greenwood!
On, Stenberg and Jones!
To the top of the set!
To the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away!
Dash away all!”

As dry leaves that before Greens made fly,
“Too much crunching noise, Rebecca” said Michael, the sound guy.
So off to North 3rd St, all of them flew,
with trucks full of gear, Cinema Catering too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof,
it was Beavis’ effects that went BOOM and POOF!
As Iscove and Blake turned scripts out and around,
down Princess Street Tom Mison came with a bound.

He was dressed perfectly vintage, from head to toe,
and hair and make up, nailed it, ready to go!
The bundled up crew was so cold in the night,
“Action” was called, yep they got it right!

The crew, they slaved, but were all still merry,
their cheeks were like roses, their noses like cherries!
Sixteen hours in, almost done for the day,
but was the finale done?  Nope, just part way!

Back at the office, they had paperwork miles long,
Lisa and Hope made sure nothing was wrong.
Josh and Stacee had so much to do,
Karen and Shannon’s list grew and grew.

Hartley worked hard like a jolly old elf,
“Gotta stay on budget,” he sternly said to himself.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
soon gave FOX word they had nothing to dread.

Sleepy Hollow fans eager, ready for more,
waiting for January is too much to endure.
So they watched again, oh yes, they replayed,
the 13th and 20th their next special days.

“Cast and crew, we love you!” We exclaimed, we yelled.
“You deserve more kudos then we can possibly tell!”
So, with that being said, before we turn off the lights,

“Happy Christmas from Wilmywood, and to all a good night!”
