WECT put out this story yesterday.  A sober look at what would happen to New Hanover County if the film incentives faded with the sunset:  New Hanover County could lose more than $10 million annually in tax revenue if the state’s film incentives aren’t renewed.  That’s according to Robert Handfield, an economist at NC State University. This includes $3.7 million in sales tax revenue, $2 million in direct sales tax revenue from film-industry workers, and $200,000 in room occupancy tax.

Handfield added, “The implications of the loss of the industry on local tax revenue will be substantial, and will drive further gaps in state and local tax revenues, increased unemployment, and the loss of an industry in North Carolina that is healthy and growing nationwide.”  READ THE ENTIRE STORY

ROADTOHOLLOWHappy Monday!  After a nice long weekend, I can tell you I actually woke up at 4:15am this morning without feeling like death!  Yay, go me!  Let’s see what’s going on in Wilmywood.  After talkin’ about it for months, Orlando Jones created his episodic adventure during his travels from California to Wilmington, NC.  And he named this epic journey, The Road to Hollow.  It’s a ” shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not have a head.  Orlando Jones, a young loner on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless (and occasionally the headless), the powerless, in a world of shippers who operate above the law.”  Check out episode 1 below.

Tonight, we will get a rerun of Episode 2, Blood Moon, originally aired on September 23rd where Ichabod and Abbie try to determine which witch is which.  We will have to wait until next Monday, December 9th for Episode 10, The Golem.  And as far as shooting goes, both units will be at Screen Gems today.  Heads up, they sleepy folks will be out and about the rest of the week.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 11/15/2013 State of the Slate Highlights, Cucalorus, Sleepy Hollow

The State of the Slate Panel was well received yesterday at Thalian Hall as part of Cucalorus 19.  It was a full house. If you missed it, there will be a webinar this Tuesday.  It is a free event but you must register via email.  Once you do, check your email for confirmation.  You will be able to log in when the event opens at 01:30PM EST on November 19, 2013.  The broadcast will start at 02:00PM EST on November 19, 2013.  REGISTER NOW! In the meantime, here’s the highlights from the panel yesterday:

“The industry has been good for small biz in NC. We can say to a studio: we have all that here. We don’t need to ship it.”~Dale Williams, UPM

“These incentives are absolutely crucial. If the incentives are not extended the way that they are presently, it will absolutely destroy the industry here,” said Rosin. “Without the incentive, you will be uprooting the lives of a lot of people.”  ~Jason Rosin, IATSE Local 491

“I dare anyone to find better film crews than in Wilmington and North Carolina” ~Exec. VP Screen Gems Studio, Bill Vassar

“We have a legislation sunset in a few months, creating uncertainty-producers want to see is the sunset go away.  Films and shows that are being planned 18 and 24 months out are not looking at North Carolina because they don’t know what is going to happen 18 months from now.”” ~Dale Williams, UPM

Enjoy the rest of your Cucalorus weekend!  Lots of flicks to see!  CHECK THEIR SCHEDULE NOW!

REMINDER: During Cucalorus, Post 1200 invites you to stop by their open house Thursday-Sunday.  And since our casting lady Vanessa Neimeyer just moved into her swanky office there, she is sharing in the celebration!  Her fun open house party will be today from 10am-3:30pm.  So many stars have passed through Post 1200  for some post work and it was also the production office for Hallmark’s Christmas in Conway.  They will be doing some screenings and giving a tour of the facility along with some coffee and munchies!

Just another day on Sleepy Hollow: One unit just left the Battleship NC completing episode 9 just as another unit arrived to start their day filming episode 10.  Two units are filming today, one in Burgaw and the other on the lot at Stage 10.

OJA lot of people wonder if Captain Irving is good or evil.  I think we change our minds about him episodically.  Perhaps we should just ask the man who plays him, Orlando Jones.

“If you asking my mother, I am totally good.  If you ask my wife, I am completely evil.”  Check out what we can expect this Monday as we travel “Into Darkness.”

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 11/11/2013 Jill Jones, Amandla Stenberg on set of Sleepy Hollow, A Cucalorus Must See and More.

JillJonesIn case you missed it last week, Jill Marie Jones (Girlfriends) has joined the cast of Sleepy Hollow as Cynthia, the former wife of Frank Irving (Orlando Jones) and mother to their teenage daughter, Macey played by Amandla Stenberg.  (Might I add I love the fact that Jones and Jones are playing the ex married couple.)  Jill and Amandla have been in Wilmywood since last week and their debut episode airs November 25th.  Both have recurring roles, so look forward to having these two lovely ladies in town for a few weeks.  Amandla is already having a great time on set.

Let’s back up a bit and take a look at tonight’s episode, The Midnight Ride, shall we! Abbie and Ichabod look for clues to stop the evil in town; Abbie receives an unexpected visit from Andy Brooks (John Cho).

Bad_Grandpa_USAlthough Thor: The Dark World hammered the competition at the weekend box office earning $86 million in its debut, our North Carolina shot Bad Grandpa remained strong with $11.3 million. The comedy’s three-week total stands at $78.7 million.

CUCALORUSA CUCALORUS MUST SEE: Broadcast – A Man and his Dream is the story of Ralph Epperson growing up in the 1920s and 30s the son of tobacco farmers in the hills of Southwestern Virginia/Northwestern North Carolina and daring to dream of a different life. As a boy he discovered radio and from then on was led by a desire to understand how to transmit sound through the airwaves. This love of technology was coupled with a passion for the broadcast2music native to his growing up, “it was then called old time and now we call it bluegrass,” along with a strong faith in God and community. In 1948 Ralph realized his dream with the opening of his first station, WPAQ 740 AM, Mt. Airy, NC, “the voice of the Blue Ridge” but his dream didn’t stop there. Most of his family followed him out of the tobacco fields and into radio. broadcastToday more than 150 radio stations around the nation owe their beginnings to Ralph Epperson and his dream as well as countless musicians who continued their music and passed along the tradition that still exists today of Blue Ridge style string music. In 2005 Director, Jordan Nance, dared to dream that despite his physical limitations from severe cerebral palsy he could make a film about Ralph and WPAQ. Now in 2013 Jordan’s dream is a reality.

The screening will be on Sunday, Nov 17 at 10:45AM in the studio theatre at Thalian Hall. There will be live bluegrass for those who come a little early and enjoy Jones Smith & Co.

Local Actor Nabs Opening Scene in “Last Vegas” OJ Takes You on a Set Tour, Conjuring #1 Again!

Tonight you can go see one of our local actors in the flick with some of the most legendary actors. Josh Cohen got the amazing opportunity to land a role in Last Vegas, which opens in theaters today!

josh cohenJosh says it’s a small part in the first scene of the movie, but that is HUGE if you ask me.  What actor wouldn’t love to be in the opening scene of a movie with the caliber of actors cast in this flick!  But, yes, he is being appropriately humble.  So in the opening scene we go straight to a flashback to 1950’s Brooklyn.  Josh plays Jimmy,  the head greaser.  “The young Robert De Niro, young Morgan Freeman, young Kevin Kline, and Young Michael Douglas are causing trouble in my buddy’s general store, said Josh. “My two greaser friends and I walk in to see our friend Danny, the shipowners son, on the floor. The kids then try to steal a bottle of Josh Cohen_runalcohol and run out of the store while we chase them.  I’m the first one to call the kids out for why my buddy is lying on the floor.  It was a great experience.”

Josh has some stories to tell including how he got the gig and a hilarious story with he and Kevin Kline in the make up trailer.  LISTEN NOW!

I spoke with Johnny Griffin with the Wilmington Film Commission, and he said that there was no ranking order for the Top Film Locations Worldwide, it was in alphabetical order.  Good!  I didn’t like being #9!  So hell yeah!  Love making that top ten list!  That is HUGE!

ConjuringThe Conjuring takes the top spot debuting at #1 on both DVD and Blu-Ray charts!  According to Nielsen research, of its first-week sales, 33 percent were on Blu-ray Disc.

The Squeeze is shooting downtown again today at 128 S. Front St and on the street on the 400 block of S. 2nd St.  They are going to have 5 of the cast members on set.  And say good bye to the beautiful Jillian Murray she heads back home today! (unless weather makes her stay for another day of shooting).

Haven’t had the chance to see the set of Sleepy Hollow.  No Worries.  Orlando Jones personally takes you.  Check out one of his WhoSay videos.  Pretty damn hilarious!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 10/18/2013 Danny McBride, Rachelle LeFevre, Banshee, Sleepy Hollow and more

Happy Friday!  Yesterday on the blog, I gave you a blip from Danny McBride on Jimmy Kimmel.  Well, we got some more in.  Raise your hand if you were in the skating scene at Jellybeans!  Here’s Danny as he explains what happened, including the clip from the shoot that day!

OrlandoOn the Sleepy Hollow front, Some more details are coming out about Captain Irving!  According to E! Online, it looks like Orlando’s character has not only an ex-wife named Cynthia, but a teenage daughter named Mae.  We will meet the two ladies after the baseball break and you can count on seeing them in multiple episodes.   Regardless of their failed marriage, they seem to have a good relationship, however Cynthia is concerned about Irving’s relationship with his daughter. Expect to see them stick around for a few episodes.

The rain has put a major damper on Sleepy Hollow’s schedule and now they are working even more crazy hours than usual to catch up.  They head to Brunswick County, one location will be the Brunswick Town Museum in Winnabow.  Ichabod and Abbie continue shooting throughout the weekend as they will pull an all-nighter.  First at the 2nd St. parking deck, then at the NHC Courthouse on N. 3rd St.  Man, they are working INSANE hours!  Kudos to the cast and NC film crew for pulling this off!

The North Carolina shot Banshee‘s second season has a premiere date.  The 10-episode season will kick off Friday, January 10th at 10 PM. The Cinemax show nabbed a Special Visual Effects Emmy and shares a similar success story as Sleepy Hollow, picking up a second season just after the 3rd episode aired. It also gave Cinemax the largest audience ever for an original series finale. Cast members include Ivana Milicevic, Ulrich Thomsen, Frankie Faison, Rus Blackwell, Gordon Hopewell, Ryann Shane, Ben Cross and Anthony Ruivivar.  Good news!  They will all be back in January!

Today is the first day of production for The Squeeze.  They have a few company moves, kicking off the day in downtown Burgaw.  They then head to the railroad bridge in Castle Hayne and finish the day at the 6th St Bridge near downtown Wilmington.  Yeah, this is not your typical golf movie.

The UNCW Film Studies group is shooting a flick called “Late Friendship”  they will also be downtown Saturday afternoon on the 200 block of N. Front St. in the Vance Alleyway.

Under the Dome’s Rachelle LeFevre wants you to save your wallet and the planet with her, “Don’t be an Idler” campaign.

Success continues for Under the Dome as CBS Studios International announced yesterday afternoon an exclusive multi-year licensing deal in Germany. According to the press release,  they will “stream the ground-breaking series UNDER THE DOME on the Watchever subscription video on demand service (SVOD) service starting in January 2014. The agreement will cover seasons one and two of the show, and will run after its initial presentation by the ProSiebensat.1 Group, where it has recently completed its first season and generated top ratings.”

Melissa-McCarthy-ElleOur Tammy star Melissa McCarthy appears on the cover for Elle‘s Women in Hollywood issue — and critics are slamming the magazine for covering up the full-figured actress’s body.

While her fellow cover models Reese WitherspoonShailene Woodleyand Marion Cotillard showed plenty of skin, Melissa sported an oversized coat. Several websites blasted Elle for the cover-up. Slate called her the magazine’s “token plus-size cover girl,” whose coat is “so huge…she could hide her Mike and Molly co-star Billy Gardel underneath. Perhaps photographer Thomas Whiteside only knows how to photograph the usual stick insect models, because he clearly has no clue how to highlight McCarthy’s curves.”

Elle responded to the backlash in a statement, saying, “On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover. We are thrilled to honor her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year.”   What do you think?  Post your comments below!

Congrats to Claire Danes for taking home an Emmy last night for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for our North Carolina shot, Homeland.

Offices for The Remaining are officially open and the cast will come into town tomorrow as they get ready for re-shoots.  Why the re-shoots?  Well without giving anything away, they decided to make some writing changes and decided to have a better outcome with a few of the scenes.  Now, I can tell you the crew is VERY glad the show is back.  Speaking with some crew members they said that although they will be a couple of very long shoot days this week, they had a great time shooting this movie earlier this year.  They enjoyed both the young cast and director on this flick.  “They were a great group of people to work with .”  They will be shooting Wednesday through Friday this week, although some have told me just Thursday and Friday.  I will find out more details.
