Robert Downey Jr. accepts the People’s Choice Award

The People’s Choice Awards were live on CBS last night it look 90 minutes to get our first NC Film winner.  Robert Downey Jr. won for Favorite Action Movie Star and Iron Man 3 took the award for Favorite Action Movie.  Downey stole everyone’s attention with his lovable self.  He asked for some reverb, a spotlight, then some triumphant music.  With all three wishes granted, he proclaimed in a deep voice, “I am Iron Man.” He then raised his award and shouted, “and this is for the people!”  Awesome! Also, it wasn’t included in the live award show, but we can tell you Homeland nabbed a PCA for Favorite Premium Cable TV Show.

IM3Before the PCA’s on Wednesday, the BAFTA nominations came out.  Although ‘Gravity’ leads the British nominations with 11, NC Film is getting a little love from across the pond.  Iron Man 3 was nominated for Best Special Visual Effects.  Here is Stark’s competition:

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 01/02/2014 Max Steel, ABC Pilot, and More

Hey there!  Happy Thursday and Happy New Year!  Well, the good thing about putting out the “Rumors from the Lot,” is that it sure gets people talkin’!  Got some much better news than on Tuesday!

Max-SteelFirst let’s start with Max Steel.  Now I cannot completely confirm this, but it seems like a pretty strong bet that the Mattel animation turned live-action will be shooting in Connecticut BUT also here in Wilmywood.  In fact after I shared the latest rumors, I was told that while they might have pulled a contract with one group, another local here has been hired for the flick – the two are unrelated, different departments.

tscc3

ABCNow remember on Tuesday I told you that we had some Prod Cos sniffin’ around.  I was told that  an ABC pilot was coming with offices opening in February and production in March. Also, that Barbara D’Alessandro would be heading that up.  I was also told that Sleepy Hollow‘s UPM, David Hartley, is in talks to work on the pilot as well.  (I heard it’s a done deal).  The show is called Secrets & Lies.  A perfect gig for Hartley in between Sleepy Hollow seasons 1 and 2.  It would also be nice to have Barbara back as well.  She’s been off working on Army Wives the past few years. She’s worked on a ton of WIlmywood projects since 1990.  I cannot completely confirm this info, but it seems to be about 80% strong.  I will keep you posted.

Secrets & Lies is an adaptation of the Australian crime mystery drama. It’s described as:

“a nerve racking plunge behind the curtains of suburbia following the story of Ben, an everyday family man who finds the body of a four-year-old boy and quickly becomes the prime murder suspect.”

Last I heard, former Private Practice executive producer Barbie Kligman will serve as writer/executive producer/showrunner.  The show has a 10-episode commitment and is already exploring casting choices. If the rumors are true and they do shoot here, let’s hope they stay in Wilmywood!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/31/2013 BIG Rumors from the Lot, Upcoming Events and More

RumorslogoHappy New Year’s Eve!  The final day of the year.  Let’s get right to “Rumors from the Lot.” We’ve got three of them to discuss.  I got some good news and some bad news.  Which do you want first?  Yeah, I can never decide either, so let’s flip a coin.  Okay, tails it is.  The bad news.  Remember, these are strictly rumors and I cannot confirm at this point.

1) Max-SteelRUMOR: Max Steel.  Last week, while visions of offices opening danced through our heads, there has been a rumor going a round that they have pulled out of Wilmington and are going to shoot in another state.  I heard they already had a few contracts in place in Wilmington and withdrew in the past week. And no I didn’t hear Georgia or Louisiana.  I heard Connecticut.  Though I haven’t been told any reason for the possible move, I can tell you a little about the state’s incentives.

In Connecticut, production companies incurring expenses between $100,000 and $500,000 are eligible for a 10 percent credit, between $500,000 and $1 million are eligible for a 15 percent credit, and over $1 million are eligible for a 30 percent credit. For income years starting Jan. 1, 2010, the minimum expenditure increases to $100,000 and makes the credit amount dependent on the production’s total expenses or costs. The state also offers a tax credit for infrastructure costs, and exemptions for property, sales and hotel taxes.

Still, with all that being said, it could indeed just be a rumor and they could very well remain here. Still looking into this one.

0426bolden2mb2) RUMOR: Bolden!  We’ve heard this rumor before, but it has definitely made the rounds again.  The word is yet again, Bolden! might be headed to Atlanta.  When?  We don’t know, just as we didn’t know their definite start up date when they were still planning on shooting here.  I will keep you posted when I hear more details. Again, rumor, let’s hope they stay here.

Tv3) RUMOR: Production Companies Scouting.  While the first two rumors are major bummers, here is something that might cheer you up.  Word on the lot is we’ve had a couple of productions companies sniffing around Wilmington, looking for that ideal place to shoot some television pilots.  No word yet on exactly who, but as soon as I find out, I will let you know.

tscc3

Now, what’s missing in this blog?  Jibber jabber about Sleepy Hollow.  It feels so weird to not report who is here in town and where they are shooting. Well, we can count on Under the Dome to fill that void soon enough.  But still, I am so sad to see them officially wrap season one. The last of the cast has gone home.  😦
UPComing events:
  • JAN 2 – TV.com’s “Best Of”: Voting ends this Thursday. NC shot TV shows on the list: Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow, Homeland, Banshee and Eastbound and Down.  VOTE NOW!
  • JAN 8 – The People’s Choice Awards are next Wednesday, 9pm EST on CBS
  • JAN 13 – Sleepy Hollow Episode 11 “Vessel” is that Monday, 9pm EST on FOX

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/18/2013 – Variety Helps Spread the Message, Hank and Jed, PCAs and more…

Howdy and Happy Hump Day! Yesterday was a fun-filled crazy day for film blogging. Not, one, not two, but three were posted as so much was going on.  I will recap and add some goodies this morning!

Yesterday on the Wilmywood Daily Facebook page, I deemed these folks as the Best NC Film Family ever! Hilarious! This Raleigh, NC Family has got more than 6 million views since last week! If you haven’t seen this video yet, you will LOVE it!

ncFLAGThe Governor’s office sent out a press release yesterday.  Film and Television Production spent at least $254 Million in North Carolina this year. That’s direct in state spending folks!  It’s been one the most successful years in NC Film history. The release stated that production companies generated more than 4,000 “well-paying” crew positions and nearly 25,000 job opportunities, including talent and background extra positions. There were more than 5,700 production days in more than 30 counties this year. READ PRESS RELEASE NOW

keepncA lot of people read this press release and liked what was included, but many were more intrigued about what was not included:  the reason for such high direct in state spending. The 25% film incentive.  An interesting omission, indeed.  Perhaps they thought is was a given?   The economic impact numbers help make our case that the incentives should not end on Jan. 1, 2015.  Regardless, we will continue the push until the big vote in May.

Ted-Johnson-VarietyI wanted to thank Ted Johnson, the senior editor for Variety for bringing this message to Hollywood.  Did you know that some people in LA think that our incentives don’t even exist anymore?  Crazy.  Production Companies and studios need to know that North Carolina is still very much a viable option.  So, thanks Ted, I think this article will be a big help.  READ HIS ARTICLE NOW

Variety also brings us this wonderful news about our NC shot  Homeland. The  season finale pulled in its largest audience to date.  READ ARTICLE NOW!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/11/2013 Max Steel Tests For Lead Roles, Times Like Dying, A Holiday Party and more!

Let the testing begin!  We’ve got a few choice actors and actresses fighting for two top notch roles in the upcoming flick, Max Steel, soon to be shot here in Wilmywood.  Of course, the top spot is Max himself.  And as for the female role, The Tracking Board reports it is currently listed as “undisclosed.”

MaxSteel Test

Anyhow, from left to right, here are the contenders ladies and gentleman!  (“Prisoners”, “Lost”),   (“Necessary Roughness”), and Noah Silver (“The Borgias”) are testing to play Max. For the undisclosed female role both  (“Parenthood”, “Ironside”) and  (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”, “The Gates”) are in the running.  Who do you think will be heading to Wilmywood?

An Indiegogo campaign had begun for the short film Times Like Dying.  Lemme just say, they had me at Evan Vetter, who is in my personal top 5 favorite filmmakers in Wilmington.  Of course he’s is teaming up with some other very loved filmmakers as well: Shon Blotzer, Anthony Reynolds and Parrish Stikeleather.  You’re money will be very well spent with these guys involved.  So, spot them a 5 or so.  You will be glad you did! Times Like Dying is a 20-minute narrative short film set in the Post-Civil War South involving a man named Percy Dixon and his brothers who are stuck with no good options. They are facing the loss of their family farm and backed into a corner. They decide the only way to save their livelihood is to rob a bank. After the robbery, the Dixon clan become separated, but rendezvous at a small farm where they have a chance encounter with a lawman who has seen better days. Over the course of the night, the truth of their actions is discovered. Loyalties are tested. Hostages are taken. Surviving the night begins to outweigh saving the farm. tscc3 E_EtcThe Eclectic Etc. is having their Grand Opening/Holiday Party this Saturday night from 6:00pm-9:00pm. THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/10/2013 Sleepy Hollow Film Crew plays Secret Santa for Wilmington Families and more!

SG10Major rumors are swirling about the NC Film Crew. Apparently, they deserve kudos and candy canes.  The  locations department of Sleepy Hollow decided to give back this year to complete strangers.  They took donations from the hundreds of crew members working on Sleepy Hollow, every department, and together they raised $1000!  They headed to Toys R Us and played Secret Santa,  secretly paying off 18 layaway plans at the toy store.  I called the production office for confirmation. As an added bonus, the store manager informed one of the crew members that Toys R Us is also going to make a matching donation to Toys For Tots! Now if that doesn’t inspire you to pay it forward, dunno what will!

The ratings for last night’s episode of Sleepy Hollow will come out later today – I will give you the full report in a separate blog on how The Golem performed.  The Sleepyheads are running two units, both filming on the lot today.

UTD_DVDCutie Pie, Hunter, with Wilm on Film, released the Under the Dome dates.  Looks like they will open offices on January and production will begin in March. And for the record, give some kudos to Hunter.  He is a lot like me, underpaid, an army of one and collecting a lot of great production news. Ha! You go boy!
