THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/30/2013 Under the Dome, Sleepy Hollow, Wilmywood Flicks Most Lucrative 2013

Good Morning and Happy Monday to ya!  A slew of praise happening as we finish out the year.  So, let’s continue that trend!  A lot of people were talking about this over the weekend. It wasn’t the top grossing movies, but the most successful ones that got the most bang for their buck and North Carolina has 4 on the list, three of which were shot right here in Wilmywood.  Here are the top 9 most lucrative movies of 2013, according to The Wrap: TheWrap - SuccessSo congrats to the cast and crew of: The Conjuring, Bad Grandpa, We’re the Millers and IM3!  Don’t know what ROI means?  It’s Return Of Investment.  The Wrap explains it in simple terms:

To calculate ROI for a movie, you take how much it grossed, subtract how much it cost and then divide that figure by how much it cost. For example, “Insidious: Chapter 2″ cost $5 million to make. It grossed $160.4 million. So here’s how we did it: $160.4M- $5M = $155.4M. $155.4M/$5M = 31.1.

CES2014Our beloved CBS series Under the Dome is among the honorees at Variety’s upcoming Breakthrough of the Year Awards, which will be held Thursday January 9th in Las Vegas at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).  Dean Norris will be on hand to accept the award. CES is the world’s largest electronics show.  It will attract more than 150,000 attendees and will have close to 3,000 exhibitors. It runs January 7th through the 10th.  READ THE STORY AT VARIETY.COM

I know stories similar to this one have already come out, but when our shows get kudos, you deserve to know. The Global Dispatch reports that due to Amazon’s $700,000 per episode buy,  it made the show profitable before it even aired. (The Amazon licensing deal partnership along with international rights made “Under the Dome” an insanely profitable enterprise, again, before it even aired. ) Because of these factors, the UTD team had less stress with how they crafted the show. Rachelle LeFevre said it best:

“There wasn’t as much pressure,” The CBS execs “were able to make big, ballsy decisions as a result, and success is what comes from that.”

Of course it didn’t hurt that the show was an instant hit.  It was the most watched summer series in more than twenty years.  Nielsen tallied up the live viewing as well as the DVR numbers and estimated that the show averaged 15+million viewers.  Amazon picked up season two, 9 months before it will air, 6 months before filming begins on season two.  That Amazon will continue with the same kind of licensing deal, exclusive domain for the online streaming of the episodes four days after they air.   READ THE ENTIRE ARTICLE NOW!

SHWitchesNow onto our other successful television show that has made its home here in Wilmywood. Laurel Brown (@DocBrown_TVdid a great piece as part of Zap2It‘s Year in Review.  It was definitely the Year of the Witch. Laurel highlights some of the best of the best from this years television shows and suggests who could beat up who.  She leaves us with the question: “Will the “Sleepy Hollow” witches dominate 2014?” Awesome Laurel!  It’s a fun piece.  READ IT NOW.

And speaking of some great cast, Lyndie Greenwood says good-bye to Wilmywood:

Nicole Beharie also said good-bye over the weekend as well.  It looks like today just might be the last day of filming the EPIC season finale! Well, that’s the plan anyway! And sorry, I cannot reveal who is left filming.  Wouldn’t wanna spoil the finale for ya!  They never shoot in sequential order anyway, but I’d rather not accidentally give anything away.  We will just have to wait until January 20th to see who is left standing!1016242_434988879942442_1440392906_n

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 10/18/2013 Danny McBride, Rachelle LeFevre, Banshee, Sleepy Hollow and more

Happy Friday!  Yesterday on the blog, I gave you a blip from Danny McBride on Jimmy Kimmel.  Well, we got some more in.  Raise your hand if you were in the skating scene at Jellybeans!  Here’s Danny as he explains what happened, including the clip from the shoot that day!

OrlandoOn the Sleepy Hollow front, Some more details are coming out about Captain Irving!  According to E! Online, it looks like Orlando’s character has not only an ex-wife named Cynthia, but a teenage daughter named Mae.  We will meet the two ladies after the baseball break and you can count on seeing them in multiple episodes.   Regardless of their failed marriage, they seem to have a good relationship, however Cynthia is concerned about Irving’s relationship with his daughter. Expect to see them stick around for a few episodes.

The rain has put a major damper on Sleepy Hollow’s schedule and now they are working even more crazy hours than usual to catch up.  They head to Brunswick County, one location will be the Brunswick Town Museum in Winnabow.  Ichabod and Abbie continue shooting throughout the weekend as they will pull an all-nighter.  First at the 2nd St. parking deck, then at the NHC Courthouse on N. 3rd St.  Man, they are working INSANE hours!  Kudos to the cast and NC film crew for pulling this off!

The North Carolina shot Banshee‘s second season has a premiere date.  The 10-episode season will kick off Friday, January 10th at 10 PM. The Cinemax show nabbed a Special Visual Effects Emmy and shares a similar success story as Sleepy Hollow, picking up a second season just after the 3rd episode aired. It also gave Cinemax the largest audience ever for an original series finale. Cast members include Ivana Milicevic, Ulrich Thomsen, Frankie Faison, Rus Blackwell, Gordon Hopewell, Ryann Shane, Ben Cross and Anthony Ruivivar.  Good news!  They will all be back in January!

Today is the first day of production for The Squeeze.  They have a few company moves, kicking off the day in downtown Burgaw.  They then head to the railroad bridge in Castle Hayne and finish the day at the 6th St Bridge near downtown Wilmington.  Yeah, this is not your typical golf movie.

The UNCW Film Studies group is shooting a flick called “Late Friendship”  they will also be downtown Saturday afternoon on the 200 block of N. Front St. in the Vance Alleyway.

Under the Dome’s Rachelle LeFevre wants you to save your wallet and the planet with her, “Don’t be an Idler” campaign.

Success continues for Under the Dome as CBS Studios International announced yesterday afternoon an exclusive multi-year licensing deal in Germany. According to the press release,  they will “stream the ground-breaking series UNDER THE DOME on the Watchever subscription video on demand service (SVOD) service starting in January 2014. The agreement will cover seasons one and two of the show, and will run after its initial presentation by the ProSiebensat.1 Group, where it has recently completed its first season and generated top ratings.”

Melissa-McCarthy-ElleOur Tammy star Melissa McCarthy appears on the cover for Elle‘s Women in Hollywood issue — and critics are slamming the magazine for covering up the full-figured actress’s body.

While her fellow cover models Reese WitherspoonShailene Woodleyand Marion Cotillard showed plenty of skin, Melissa sported an oversized coat. Several websites blasted Elle for the cover-up. Slate called her the magazine’s “token plus-size cover girl,” whose coat is “so huge…she could hide her Mike and Molly co-star Billy Gardel underneath. Perhaps photographer Thomas Whiteside only knows how to photograph the usual stick insect models, because he clearly has no clue how to highlight McCarthy’s curves.”

Elle responded to the backlash in a statement, saying, “On all of our shoots, our stylists work with the stars to choose pieces they feel good in, and this is no different: Melissa loved this look, and is gorgeous on our cover. We are thrilled to honor her as one of our Women in Hollywood this year.”   What do you think?  Post your comments below!

WHAT’S UP IN WILMYWOOD 07/15/2013 The Weekend Afterglow

A great time was had over the weekend. Let’s start with the Pipeline to a Cure, the benefit to support Cystic Fibrosis.  We decided to auction off a date with Under the Dome’s John Elvis who came out to support.  We ended up raising $800.  Here’s some great photos from the night:

Toni Silvagni, our own surf hero here in Carolina Beach was honored on Saturday night, which means he didn’t get to go to the premiere party for The Perfect Summer that was shot here just a few months ago by Swirl Films.  But thank goodness they aired it multiple times over the weekend on the Up Network (TWC 283), so everyone got the chance to see it.  Have to give major kudos to Swirl for getting in some of the best establishing shots on our area.  Makes me wanna move there…oh wait…

1064036_10152992247495117_575935430_oSo, let’s flip back to Under the Dome real quick.  Episode 4 is tonight on CBS at 10pm.   As if living under the dome wasn’t already cruel enough, tonight Chester’s Mill is being hit with a meningitis outbreak, and to make matters worse the medical supplies are running low.
Don’t forget Live tweeting with the cast and producers at #UnderTheDome.   Or hang at the viewing party at Hell’s Kitchen downtown at 10pm.   The gang is shooting back in Currie, NC today.  They UTD4only have two more weeks of production before the cast heads to where ever they will go.  Still waiting for official word for a season two.  If that does indeed happen, we won’t have to miss the gang for too long.  The cast had another rambling weekend. Colin and Mackenzie joined Nick, Aisha, Rachelle, Dean, Jolene, John, Alex for dinner than all those over the age of 21 enjoyed the rest of the night downtown.

Finishing with some quickies, Michael Phelps was back in Wrightsville Beach over the weekend at The Yacht Club. Tomorrow, Eastbound and Down is shooting Union Missionary Baptist Church,  and Maides Park.

That just about does it for me; I will have more Wilmywood updates for you tomorrow morning and every weekday morning at 7:30am & 8:30am LIVE on Sunny 104.5.  Got Scoop?  Email me:  Or message me on Wilmywood’s FB .  Or just post your comments below!  Until then, that’s a wrap!

WHAT’S UP IN WILMYWOOD 07/08/2013 – It’s Dome Day once again!

It’s Dome Day once again, so either watch Under the Dome at 10pm tonight or set your DVRs!  And you know where to go for the viewing party.  Hell’s Kitchen is the place to be.  Some of the stars show up for the weekly event, you never know who is going to be there.  If you are a fan of John Elvis who plays the character Ben, he’s a regular, so stop on by and say hello!  Tonight is his big scene showing off his mad skating skills.  What were the stars up to this weekend? Rachelle LeFevre spent some time in Charleston over the weekend at the Market Pavilion Hotel and was especially entranced with their down home,  southern food.   Looks like Mackenzie Lintz went back to her homestate of MidnightRamblersGeorgia to hang with some of her besties.  Jolene Purdy, Nicholas Strong  and Alex Koch aka the Midnight Ramblers as they call themselves, rambled all over Wilmington.  Nicholas said they were at the beach, the pool, they barbequed, even had a dinner party set to Sinatra.  Here’s a pic they tweeted over the weekend.

Only a few days left to win a map of Chester’s Mill & a signed copy of #UnderTheDome by Stephen King! Enter now!

Ty Pennington of Extreme Makeover fame, was hanging with some local friends at Topsail Beach over the weekend.  Did you see him?  I wonder if he is as ADD in real life as he is on the show.  No matter, he is sooo adorable!

Eastbound and Down is  shooting on Tabor Lane just off N Kerr Ave today.  There’s a casting call for Wednesday’s shoot from NCasting: EASTBOUND & DOWN: “This will work Wednesday.  I need 5 Mexican males ages 18 and up. Please spread the word!!! Have them email me a CURRENT photograph with the following information – NAME, AGE, HEIGHT/WEIGHT,

Excitement is filling the air as we gear up for Sleepy Hollow.  They begin production in two weeks. As far as casting goes for the Fox show, I do know they will be looking for Revolutionary War re-actors really soon. I will keep you posted or you can check for more details at Revo Casting Calls on Facebook.”

Hope everyone had a great 4th of July.  Where were the stars celebrating? Well, wherever Eastbound and Down cast members celebrated, they got an extended weekend.  They won’t be shooting until Monday on Fremont St.  The Under the Dome folks are shooting in Burgaw today.  Rachelle LeFevre spent her time in Wrightsville Beach.  She was looking for someone with a boat.  Hopefully she found someone!  Other cast members also had a great time on the 4th.

dean norris ‏@deanjnorris “Grilling meat. Wrightsville Beach. A shit ton of explosives. Yeah, this ain’t CA we will be blowing shit up!! I love America. Happy 4th”
Jolene Purdy@jojopurdy “Party crashing on the 4th with the ramblers @1NicholasStrong #alexkoch
John Elvis (who plays Ben) was also out with the crazy kids! They spent their time pretty much all over Wilmington! There’s still a lot of questions about how the dome works.  So, here’s what we know so far.

Hoping to find out more, Monday night at 10pm! Wanna know where some of the scenes were shot in Under the Dome? I got an email from Owen in Connecticut:

I watched the Under the Dome premiere, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and I have a strange question I’m hoping you can answer.  In the episode, Barbie (Mike Vogel), in an effort to avoid cows in the middle of the street, crashes through a fence and onto a farm where Angie (Britt Robertson) and Joe (Colin Ford) live. Shortly after Barbie crashes his car, the titular dome comes crashing down on Chester’s Mill … splitting an unlucky cow in the process! I know the majority of the pilot episode was filmed in Southport, Burgaw and Wilmington, but I’m guessing this farm is not in any of those three places. I’m not a local, however (I live in Connecticut), so I was wondering if you might happen to know where this series-setting scene was filmed. Any help would be terrific.

Thanks for writing Owen, and here’s your answer along with some other locations.

Under the Dome is shot in three different counties: New Hanover (Wilmington), Brunswick (Southport) and Pender (Burgaw and Currie).

– The scene where Mike Vogel (Barbie) crashed in the pilot and where the dome came down on him and Colin Ford (Joe) was shot in Currie, NC

– Big Jim’s Car Lot took over Southport Motorcars on North Howe Street in Southport.

– Chester’s Mill Clinic is actually The Ocean Trail Convalescent Center also in Southport.

– Big Jim’s house is actually in two different counties.  His back porch is in Southport on E. Bay St, but the inside of his house is near downtown Wilmington on Chestnut St.

– The location used for the kids partying after the dome comes down with John Elvis (Ben) and Colin Ford (Joe) is called the 6th St Bridge (aka Harry Forden Truss Bridge) which is just past Downtown Wilmington.

– The location used for the gas station where Mackenzie Lintz(Norrie), Aisha Hinds(Carolyn) and Samantha Mathis(Alice) stops before the dome comes down is in downtown Burgaw at a defunct gas station at the corner of E. Wilmington/N. Wright St.UTDset062013_0454

– The exterior radio station is in Southport, but the interior is on Sound Stage 7 at EUE/Screen Gems studios in Wilmington.

– Other interiors at EUE/Screen Gems includes the bunker where Alexander Koch (Junior) holds Britt Robertson (Angie) captive.  This is also on Stage 7.

– On Stage 8, you will find the Sweetbriar Rose, the cafe run by Beth Broderick (Rose).UTDSet062013_0306

Anymore location questions? Post ’em below!

The dome has descended upon Chester’s Mill and there is no way in or no way out! Get a sneak peek of what’s in store for the town and its residents as they become sealed off from the rest of the world in this summer’s critically acclaimed series based on the bestselling book by Stephen King, from Amblin Television. Stars Dean Norris (Breaking Bad), Mike Vogel (Bates Motel) and Rachelle Lefevre (Twilight) will be joined by executive producers Brian K. Vaughan (Lost) and Neal Baer (Law & Order: SVU).  Norris, Vogel and Lefevre will participate in an exclusive autograph signing following the panel at the CBS Interactive Booth at 3:30 PM – 4:15 PM on the convention floor.

I’ll catch you tomorrow night Under the Dome on CBS-10WILM at 10pm! Don’t miss tomorrow’s blog, some more movies coming into town, plus…well I will wait until tomorrow.  Don’t want anyone stealing my stories!  Happens all the time!

Based on a bestselling Stephen King novel, executive produced by A-list showrunner Neal Baer and with a cast that includes Dean Norris, Rachelle Lefevre and Britt Robertson, this is one summer show that isn’t debuting after the official end of the season because of a lack of network confidence.
