THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 04/18/2014 Mike Vogel Goes Hallmark, Max Steel, The Longest Ride, Shannon Rippy and more.

Hippety-Hoppety damn good mornin’ to ya! Under the Dome is off today as it is Good Friday, and a good Friday it is indeed.  However that doesn’t stop us from seeing stars, one in particular.

InMyDreamsFilmPosterOur homie Domie Mike Vogel comes out of the Dome for the Hallmark Hall of Fame movie, In My Dreams this Sunday night on ABC at 9pm EST. (I know the video claims it’s on tonight, but it is on this Sunday) Nick (Mike Vogel) and Natalie (Katharine McPhee) are the perfect couple, only they have never actually met. After tossing coins in Haywood Fountain, the two start dreaming about each other. According to fountain mythology, they have exactly seven days to turn their dreams into a reality. Now doesn’t that sound as sweet as all get out! Don’t miss it!

MAXSTEEL_CASTMax Steel‘s Ben Winchell who plays the lead Max McGrath makes his way into town this weekend and his counterpart Ana Villafane will make it into town early next week!  Yay! Producer Julia Pistor as well as writer Christopher Yost was here as well, they are headed out, but will be coming back shortly as things will start getting super fun soon enough!

Looks like Nicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride has pushed their start date to mid June. I will keep you posted on any other details that come out.

shannonRippy

It has been 13 days since anyone has seen our film friend 53-year-old Shannon Rippy Vannewkirk.  Investigators with the Wilmington Police Department now believe there may be foul play surrounding Shannon’s disappearance. Apparently new information has come out that are turning the police’s minds towards the negative. They cannot say what that information is, but they are confident that foul play is at hand. At the vigil held last night on the steps of the federal building, the negative news that foul play is in the mix, it hit home for many. Thankfully in addition to the police on the case is the Cue Center for Missing Persons. There is no search team in the country better than the Cue Center. “Someone out there knows something and that’s why we have to spread the word. Someone may have seen something, someone may have heard something,” said Seidman to WECT.

WWAY,  however, has the latest on the vigil from last night. READ NOW

Sarah Jones: The investigation heats up

SarahSlate2

The investigation is heating up into the death of 27 year old camera assistant Sarah Jones while on the set of Midnight Rider back in February.  The blame game is being push around from the director’s “whatever it takes” attitude to the city, citing pressure for more films to come to the quaint town.   Deadline reports that Savannah has been “hungry to grow into a contender” vying the film industries in Atlanta and Wilmington since they put into play their new and improved film incentives a few years back.

It’s starting to get ugly, folks.  Deadline’s got the story.  READ NOW

SarahJones__SOCThe Society of Camera Operators paid tribute to Sarah Jones this week in its annual awards ceremony.  Earlier in the week a candlelight vigil took place on Sunset Boulevard with nearly 1,000 supporters in attendance. Sarah’s parents attended both of these events where they accepted a plaque in Sarah’s honor and spoke on her behalf.

sarahjones candleThe tragic death of 27 year old Sarah has sparked a great amount of attention to the importance of on set safety.   The film ‘Midnight Rider‘ has suspended filming since the encounter with a train that injured 7 crew members, including Sleepy Hollow hair stylist, Joyce Gilliard and took the life of Sarah Jones.
A scholarship fund has been set up in Sarah’s name and an address to send donations is included in the full story here.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 03/03/2014 Secrets & Lies, Under the Dome, Tributes at The Oscars

Happy Monday Wilmywood! Looks like a tweetfest was on over the weekend!  You’ll see what I mean.  Let’s get started!  A great first day of filming on the set of ABC’s Secrets and Lies on Friday. And a long one too.  A sixteen hour work day concluded around midnight for our talented cast and crew filming in the Porter’s Neck area. Aaron Kaplan tweeted a pic from the set.

Included in the mix was Ryan Phillippe, Juliette Lewis and Natalie Martinez just to name a few. Natalie tweeted on Friday:

Oh and kudos to Cinema Catering, I heard the food was fabulous.  May taste buds around the set today indulge once more!  Over the weekend it looks like the SNL crew had a little fun on the intracoastal waterway.  Producer Aaron Kaplan tweeted a shot of our lovely Natalie:

The cast and crew will be back in the Porter’s Neck area again today. Natalie is gonna be one busy lady for the next few weeks as she is doing double time on Secrets & Lies AND Under the Dome. And yes! Today’s the day! The film family is back together!  Day one begins in Burgaw it looks like it’s going to be a long day as well for our Domies.

It’s gonna be one hell of an episode!  If you remember when we, along with every other media outlet,  reported that this is the “Stephen King” episode.  Yep, written by the horror god himself.  And by the way, rumors are flying about the brilliant writer already being in town.  So, be on the lookout, you never know where he might be floating around Wilmington.  And yes, our man, had to tweet his excitement, too!

Jack Bender is directing this episode.  We can safely do the math on this one.  King+Bender=Epic Premiere episode!  Can’t wait until June 30th to see what they are dishing out!

Meanwhile you know the actors love our restaurants here in Wilmywood and the latest  love comes from Dean!

“Topsail oysters on a Sunday afternoon at the Dock Street oyster bar are the salties BEST this time of year #wilmington

And can I give some MAJOR KUDOS to Rachelle LeFevre who hosted a little get together for the cast and crew over at the Blue Post Friday night before all the craziness begins!  What a woman!  Love her!

So, yes we have two productions running and by late next week, we will have three.  What we called The Red Zone, is back to it’s original title, the “Untitled Nikki Toscano Project.”  This will be the week of breaking casting news!  As soon as I know anything, I will fill you in.

Sarah_OscarNow moving on to last night’s Academy Awards, I will hand it over to Clare Halstead, our new contributor for The Wilmywood Daily.

Although the Oscars are usually a night for pure entertainment, there was another reason that the film community was tuned in. We lost a member of our film family last month due to an incident that could have been prevented. Sarah Elizabeth Jones, a beloved local IATSE 600 camera assistant was tragically killed while during a test shoot for the film Midnight Rider. The accident happened in Jesup, Georgia, where Midnight Rider was going to start filming the very next day. While Pink sang along with clips of the Wizard of Oz, I couldn’t help but think perhaps this was one of the movies that had given Sarah the inspiration to go into film.

But perhaps the moment of the night which left some people in joyous tears, others in disappointment was after the In Memoriam.  The Oscars paid tribute to Shirley Temple, Paul Walker, and Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, just to name a few.  Bette Midler, came on stage and left us weeping  with her Beaches theme,   “Wind Beneath My Wings.”  After the standing ovation, a banner below just for Sarah appeared.  While a few went to twitter saddened that Sarah was not in the big planned “keep us in your memory” section, I was proud, along with so many that she stood alone. It was like that song was just for her.

SarahRibbons

 Well done, Academy.  #ClassAct.

We all have these dreams that we aspire to achieve before our time is up, and sometimes those dreams seem so far away. I’m not ashamed to admit that while Pink sang, I shed a few tears. I couldn’t help but think of how painful it must have been for her Sarah_Memoriamfamily know that she wouldn’t be coming home, but how comforting it must be knowing that she was doing something that she loved. Sarah wasn’t afraid to follow her dream, and neither should anyone else. Although there wasn’t much said about Sarah Jones at the beginning Oscars, there were attendees that paid homage to her. Gravity, which won Oscars for Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Visual Effects carried the memory of Sarah with them throughout the night by wearing black ribbons on their lapels.

Now of course the two other reasons so many Wilmywood folks watched last night  was for our two North Carolina shot films. Bad Grandpa’s Steven Prouty was nominated for best makeup, however they lost out to the Dallas Buyers Club which had a winner earlier in the evening consisting of Jared Leto (the man loves love loves his mother). And then Iron Man 3 was up for Best Visual effects, however the Oscar went to Gravity.  But after the beautiful yet silent homage from so many folks who worked on that film, it was a pleasure watching them win.

secretsLiesYay!  The first production day of the season!  ABC’s Secrets & Lies kicks it off in Porter’s Neck.  Wanna know some more secrets?  How about how Producer Aaron Kaplan feels about Wilmington and why he chose to bring it here.  Hunter Ingram of the Star News snagged this fabulous quote:

aaronkaplan“When we were trying to decide where to shoot this, one of the most important things for us was that we had to pick an American city that felt very safe, very bucolic and a place that would be rattled by something like the murder of a child,” Kaplan said.

Aaron says more and he wasn’t the only one that agreed.  Find out who cited our excellent film incentives and crew base to seal the deal. READ MORE NOW

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 02/27/2014 Two Features Coming to NC, A Focus on Local Hires, Conjuring Sequel, Sarah Jones’ Family

ncfilmNorth Carolina has two more feature films coming to shoot this spring and summer. And each are both filming in more than one state.

Overflow Entertainment is taking The Sin Seer to two states.  North Carolina and Louisiana. The story involves Rose Ricard who has been given a very special gift by God — the ability to see the sin a person carries in their soul. While she uses her gift to, hopefully, rights the wrongs in society, she also knows the gift comes with a price tag.

Is it just me or does John Noble needs to be a consultant on this flick? (Sleepy Hollow reference). Producing is Angela White.  Paul Hannah is the writer/director.   Production is currently scheduled to begin May 5.

Pathways Productions is bringing us The Show.   Looks like they will also be splitting the love between NC and Atlanta, GA.  As it stands, they plan to shoot this summer.  The Show is about Percy King, a very talented musician who aspires to be a great band director, but of course a girl gets in the mix, and in the way messing with his emotions and leaves him questioning his morals.  The production company deems it a story about “man’s constant strive for perfection and his constant inability to achieve it and sheds light on a community of often misunderstood strangers that act as a family, even in the darkest of times, and shows you why no matter what, the show, much like life must always go on.” Justin Jacobs is writing.  JR Butler will direct.

No word yet if they will be filming in Wilmington or in other parts of North Carolina.  I will keep you posted.

Red27Stunt Coordinator Peter King and the Red 27 crew had their hands full Monday as over 50 stunt performers filled Stage 3 at EUE/Screen Gems Studios, for Under The Dome Season Two stunt auditions.  Now, normally you don’t see too many open auditions when it comes to stunts, around these parts anyway, but there was a damn good reason. 1) Meet new talent.  2) Local hires.  As we gear up for multiple shows filming simultaneously, Peter wanted to reach out to the Wilmington area and really see who is out there.  Monday’s 2-hour action packed audition gave Peter and his team a chance to meet performers face to face and get a taste of what they’ve got.  It’s really important to Peter to hire local first, then if there is a need that cannot be filled to look regionally.  And after reviewing the tapes yesterday, they think they found some great new folks to add to their list of local talent.  On a personal note: THANK YOU for hiring local!

ConjuringNew Line has set a release date for the sequel for The Conjuring. It will be a pre-Halloween release on Oct. 23, 2015.  Looks like Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will return.  Variety reported that the yet-to-be titled sequel does not have a director yet.  Location is still unknown at this time.
