What can NC attract with the $10 Million Film Grant?

If the gavel goes down on the short session without including the film incentives, and we are 100% stuck with the $10 million Grant, our friend Jeff Hidek from the Star News put out a great visual. Remember I said IF. Even though things look quite grim, the short session is not over.  However, if some productions can bypass all the hoops to jump through and can wait until January 1st to apply for the grant, this is what we can expect to attract. And of course we could only land a handful because the money would go fast. That being said, very well done, Jeff. READ ARTICLE NOW in regards to this illustration.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 04/14/2014 Mtv Movie Awards, PaxEast Afterglow, Casting Call for How and Why and More.

By Sheila Brothers and April Vickery

Goood Morning!  Hope you had a great Azalea Fest Weekend.  This was the first Azalea Fest I have missing in 13 years.  Geesh!  But hey, it was worth it to follow our local boys, Hank and Jed Movie Pictures to Boston for PAX East.  A crazy time and worth every bit of dragging ass this morning!  Here’s a few pics from the weekend.

Our Domies are running two Units today. They will be splitting counties, one in Southport as they head back to the church and the other next to Screen Gems on One Tree Hill Way.

JuliaSarahStoneFX’s How and Why put out their first casting call over the weekend, and Ashli’s definitely got a tough one to cast!  But hey, this is Wilmywood!  So, spread the word for our girl!  See below:

We have one actress who will be playing triplets. I am in need to find 2 photo doubles (would LOVE to find twins!!) who can match her from behind to be used when we need to see all three triplets in a shot. We do have a young actress playing the role, but she is playing a tomboy so from behind it is very likely she will look like a boy. With that said, I would accept options of boys and girls but everyone would need to prepare to alter hair to match how they decided to have the actress look (but I am also seeing if production would consider using wigs). It would also be great if child has some acting experience because they might be asked to read lines off camera in some scenes.

This is a paid position, but the rate has not been finalized, but it shouldn’t be less than $125 per day. Those selected would need to be available to work in Wilmington, NC on Thursday May 1st, Friday May 2nd, Monday May 5th and Tuesday May 6th (please note that these dates can always change). Because this is such a specific look I am looking for, I am willing to consider kids from outside of the Wilmington area, but please note that we will not be able to pay for travel and lodging.

So here is what I am looking for: 11-15 yr old Males and Females 5’4 ½” and petite. I am not sure what color they are going to have our actresses’ hair, so I would open it to blondes and brunettes. The following sizes are in reference to girl sizes: Top/shirt- xs or 0, pants/skirt: 0, hips: 28, 7 or 7.5 shoe. In reference for boys, just need options of small petite guys who wear size small.
If interested and you meet requirements please send recent photos (one shoulder and up, one full body length facing the camera and then one photo full body length facing away from camera), age, height, weight, wardrobe sizes, contact information, and your location to howandwhyextras@gmail.com SUBJECT:PHOTO DOUBLE

cats eyeOn Saturday, the Wilmywood flick Cat’s Eye turned 29 years old. The horror movie written by author Stephen King (maybe you’ve hear of him) and directed by Lewis Teague  incorporates a stray kitty into three different suspense stories. The film stars a young Drew Barrymore who was also the lead in another little NC film by Stephen King’s Firestarter in 1984!

Speaking of novels up on the big screen, have you caught up with Resurrection? Our beloved NC boy Jason Mott (author The Returned which the story is based on) and Kevin Sizemore are making NC film proud. Last night , Kevin’s character “Gary” was introduced and boy did he make an entrance!! Only a couple of more shows before the season finale. You have all week to catch up and then be on Twitter to live chat with the cast using the #Resurrection hashtag.

Speaking of that ABC hit show, it looks like the EW Community folks want me to save my interview with Jason for the finale. They have something in mind that I am quite excited about for this week, so I am happy to oblige!

07/29/2013 Eastbound, Sleepy Hollow, The Conjuring

Over the weekend, The Conjuring (even though it wasn’t first place thanks to The Wolverine), still held strong and earned $22.1 million.  Box Office Mojo predicts it to hit over $100 million by next weekend.

The Star News was throwing out all the hot news over the weekend.  First let’s start off with Eastbound and Down. Jeff Hidek reports HBO president Michael Lombardo offered up a bit of a tease about the future of Kenny Powers.   “You’ll find Kenny struggling with marriage, suburbia and his continued demons.”  Love me some Jeff!  Read his full blog –   If you subscribe to the Star News anyway.  Season Four airs on HBO September 29th.    The gang will be shooting at Independence Mall today.  MikeSpencer took some great pics from the 26th at Maides Park.  Check ’em out!

Production began over the weekend for Sleepy Hollow in New Bern.  Today they begin having a little fun at Tryon Palace also in New Bern.  The Star News reports, “Scenes for “Sleepy Hollow” that are being filmed at the Palace will primarily take place in the eastern courtyard — between the outer and inner gates — and the smokehouse, located just behind the Kitchen Office.”  See the entire article if you subscribe to the Star News Now.  They will continue to film in New Bern for the next few days before they return to Wilmington.

Although the Wrap party was this weekend, Under the Dome has only a few days left until they leave us for a few months!  They are back at the stage and a 2nd Unit is heading to the Ideal Cement Factory today.  Oh, and did I mention, it’s DOME DAY!  Woo Hoo!  Yes! I am so saving the best for last.  Episode 6 is on tonight baby!  10pm EST on CBS!  And of course, Hell’s Kitchen is the official viewing party headquarters, so if you head downtown, it’s the place to be!

WHAT’S UP IN WILMYWOOD – 06/05/2013 – Want Tickets to the Under the Dome Premiere?

Wilmywood Film Peep of the Day

Sean Bozeman – Production

Happy Wednesday!  Did I get any sleep last night, you ask?  That would be a negative!  Must be slappy happy cuz I am in a very good mood indeed!  Maybe because we got some FUN FUN FUN stuff to talk about!

utd_wilmington_premiereWell, Cassie Foss with the Star News went ahead and spilled the beans.  Yes, the big news I’ve been teasing you with is the BIG LOCAL premiere of Under the Dome.  It’s gonna be four days prior to the television premiere.   We at Sunny 104.5 are proud to team up with CBS and our sister station CBS10-WILM to bring this event to Wilmington.  And here’s the best part!    I hope karma is in your favor, because you could be going to this fabulous UTD Red Carpet event.  That’s Right!  We’ve got tickets!  The premiere will be held at Thalian Hall, Main Stage, Thursday, June 20th at 6:30pm.  Oh, did I mention VERY SPECIAL GUESTS will be in attendance?  How about Rachelle LeFevre, Dean Norris, Natalie Martinez, Mike Vogel, Britt Robinson, plus the main man, Stephen King himself.  It will include a Q&A session with the UTD team!  Make sure you listen to Sunny 104.5 and visit the web site as I can’t wait to spill it!  And of course give away tickets to this one-of-a-kind event!  I will dish when I am allowed to!  Go ahead, gimme a “Woo Hoo!”  Ya know you wanna!

Ms. Penny Lane

BartenderSheilaI decided it would be a good thing for me to live the life of an extra for the next two days.  Really dive into why people love working background so much. I did get to meet Susan Sarandon and her pretty puppy Ms. Penny while getting my wardrobe for the day.  Let me first tell you yesterday was a loooong day! I did the Sunny Morning Show, then went straight to the set of Tammy at the Blue Post downtown.  And waited.  And waited.  And waited.  Still waiting.  The blood in my veins began to congeal.  Waited some more.  Convos in the room spread through the echoing banquet room like white noise, endangering my mind to slip into a deep coma.  “BARTENDER?”  What?  What was that?  Oh, me, that’s me!  Oh, joy to move the limbs!  Like melted butter down a hungry man’s throat at Red Lobster, the blood started coursing once again!  I am ready…

To wait once again.  What the – !  What just happened?  It’s like waiting in line for two hours to ride The Zephyr, and the damn teenager who runs the ride decides it’s time for a long smoke break just as you make it to the front of the line.  :::::SIGH :::::

FINALLY – we make it to set!  All the lights, all the cameras, all the action!  Now wer’re havin’ fun.  Of course, you can’t talk, so I like to entertain myself.  I find that pantomiming really dirty things brings a smile to my face, and any lip reading guys within 10 feet of me. Okay, that part wasn’t true, but I wanted too!  Can I tell you just how damn funny Melissa McCarthy is!  The comedic timing is brilliant and her ad-libs are better than the script (that she co-wrote).

Zach Hanner

Zach Hanner

My friend Zach Hanner got to bounce quite a few lines with her in this scene, great to watch a local perform with the big Hollywood players.  But the most endearing experience was when Charles Calhoun was at the bar, who I was serving in the scene.  His first position was a direct camera shot.  Then he was asked to move so only his back was in the camera’s eye.

Charles Calhoun

Charles Calhoun

I think Melissa could tell that he was bummed.  She walked over, introduced herself, then explained the reason she moved him.  It was because she really liked his shirt.  But she didn’t stop there.  She actually made sure that they had a moment on camera together for a beat before she walked past the bar.  Wow!  It was so touching.  Humanity at its finest and a total class act.  I am really loving this woman!  So, yeah I am about to pass out.  I will have to tell you more stories tomorrow!  The Tammy crew is back at the Blue Post today!

That just about does it for me; I will have more Wilmywood updates for you tomorrow morning and every weekday morning at 8:30am LIVE on Sunny 104.5.  Got Scoop?  Email me: sheila@1045sunnyfm.com.  Or message me on Wilmywood’s FB .  Or just post your comments below!  Until then, that’s a wrap!

Here comes the competition: SC’s new film incentives

Yesterday, Gov. Nikki Haley signed into law a bill offering more incentives to movies and television shows that want to film in South Carolina.  And the new law makes the incentives permanent.

The previous incentives offered, 15% on all Wages and 15%+ on Supplies.  Now, the law allows film companies to be reimbursed 20 percent on payroll taxes for wages given to out-of-state people and 25 percent for state residents. Productions can also save up to 30% on the taxes spent at local business.  BUT the breaks don’t kick in until a TV show or film spends $1 million.

We still have better incentives here in North Carolina, but SC is now more appealing than before.  Check out the complete article from the Associated Press in the Star News.

WHAT’S UP IN WILMYWOOD – 05/10/2013 – Perfect Summer, Tammy, Port City Pop Con and More

Perfect SummerWell, I have to give a big thank you to a few news outlets for giving some kudos to the surfers.  Wednesday, a couple of surfers who were working on The Perfect Summer saved some people stuck in a bad rip tide.  See Cassie’s story here in the Star News.  This is nothing new, however.  If you spend your summer at the beach, you know our awesome surfers save lives every week, even more ofter than our lifeguards.  It’s just something they do.  They are always scanning the water.  They totally deserve the recognition.  The Perfect Summer, starring Eric Roberts, is shooting in Carolina Beach today.  They head over to Fort Fisher tomorrow.

Now moving on to Tammy.  Looks like Melissa Mc Carthy, Nat Faxon and Toni Collette will be shooting today on Nun St.  And speaking of Toni, another star sighting!  There was a HUGE buzz in the air at Whole Foods Wednesday around lunchtime.  Darcie reports two store employees were excitedly chatting about Toni Collette after one had just rang up her purchase.  Love it!

There’s going to be star sighting GALORE this weekend.  Not only due to all the stars filming, but POP CONNING as well.

deewallaceDozens of stars are here now and are gearing up for tonight as Day 1 of Port City Pop Con begins! Michael Biehn, Ernie Hudson, Dee Wallace, Margot Kidder, Camden Toy, Scott Grimes, Bob Guiney, Rob Wiethoff (John Marston RDD), Robbie Rist (Oliver, Brady Bunch).

Great line up!  I will definitely see you there!   That just about does it for me; I will have more Wilmywood updates for you tomorrow morning and every morning (Monday-Friday) at 8:30am on Sunny 104.5.  Got Scoop?  email me: sheila@1045sunnyfm.com.  Until then, that’s a wrap!

The Johnny Depp Effect

JohnnyDeppYou say one name in this town and people simply go INSANE! And that name is Johnny Depp.

Well, this certainly isn’t the first time people have cried “Wolf!” or “Johnny!” in our case. Last year, someone said they spotted him at a Port City Java, and within minutes the whole town was saying he was filming here. Well, we can thank the Star News’ Fran Norton for the most recent one and WWAY for reporting Fran’s story without doing their own homework. It was very short lived, so if you weren’t on FB or Twitter Friday morning, you probably missed it. But it really got me very aggravated. Why? Well, let me tell you how it all started.

craigslist_01-300x225It began with a CraigsList post: “Feature Film with Johnny Depp (Wilmington)”

“Feature Film with Johnny Depp currently casting for principal, supporting, and extra roles! Pay is up to $842.00 per day depending on role and experience!! Good Luck!”

Hmmmm.  Time to do some digging.  Now, anyone should know, a casting company for a A-list attached feature film does not use CraigsList. That is a red flag right there. But then the other two sources that were used to create this news story were from Facebook and AxcessTalent.com.

Clint, from Axcess Talent says they got it from EastCoastAuditions.net. Normally, the listings he gets are legit, so this bothered him as much as it bothered me. Since I spoke to Clint, very nice guy by the way, East Coast Talent still has not taken down the post, which was a replica of the CraigsList post. Clint no longer has Wilmington attached to the casting call.

As far as using the Facebook page as a “news source”, The Wilmington Casting Call page had the same verbage, it was from CraigsList. After I spoke to the admin, he agreed with me and removed the post as well.

I can hear Yoda right now: Long winded is she. Okay, getting to the point. Why was I so aggravated? Multiple reasons, so let me list them.

1) How many people sent their personal information to this CraigsList person because of our Wilmington “news” reporting? THAT IS HARMFUL.  I cannot stress that enough.  HARMFUL!

2) The Star News is not a rumor magazine. It is a news source we are “supposed” to trust! Do your homework!

3) Same goes for our TV news, they didn’t bother checking if the Star News did their homework. Again, we are supposed to trust you!

4) Facebook and CraigsList are not reliable sources for a big story!

5) Did I mention that Johnny Depp was the breaking news story Friday morning, with a huge picture of him on the home page of  Starnewsonline.com.  Argh!

With all that being said, I absolutely adore so many of the reporters here in our town. Jeff, Cassie, Ashley…no one can touch them, they are incredible.  And yes, we all make mistakes.  I certainly do all the time.   But it seems as though the news lately, locally as well as nationally, doesn’t bother to check their sources, they just run with it and hopefully, it’s right.  It felt like all they cared about was web views and it was a “lemme get this out there so we can be first” mindset.  It would be one thing if there were TMZ, The Sun, or some entertainment magazine, but they are not.  We count on them for reliable and accurate information.

So will the real Johnny Depp Movie please stand up! Please stand up!

Untitled-3I received a voicemail from the Staff Production Coordinator, Micaela Brown, who is currently on the Johnny Depp flick, Transcendence and she said, “I got your message and I am calling to confirm that you are correct in that Transcendence is NOT filming in North Carolina.”  Depp’s other flick, Boston Mass, is already underway in South Boston.

I can tell you Transcendence will be filming a small piece of it in New Mexico this summer. That I know because I spoke with a casting company there who is currently casting day players and extras. It co-stars Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman, and more.

Johnny Depp does have 20 other projects in development, so who knows, maybe one will come our way, next month, or next year.  And after me going on and on about this, maybe I am missing something.  Maybe he is coming.  Hell, if that’s the case, PLEASE let me be wrong!

Major kudos to the Wilmington Regional Film Commission and the politicians who believe that the film industry needs to remain strong now more than ever.  For me personally, 90% of my friends either work directly in the film industry or are affected by it in a positive way.  The restaurant owners, the store owners.  And it trickles down to the people they hire.  It was a wonderful thing to see and show my son how when people band together, they can do great things.

Also, I wanted to personally thank the hundreds of people who turned out to show their support.  I caught up with Rachelle LeFevre who is currently cast in CBS’s Under The Dome.  She and her handsome man joined our industry folks at the rally and I thanked her for being there.  She smiled and said, “I absolutely had to come.  We love filming here.”  Well, we love having you here, you lovely lady!  On a side note, she loves to hang out at many of the local restaurants including, Manna and Catch.  She knows how important film is to our local economy.

On a final note, a flyer was handed out on Saturday urging you to THANK the North Carolina Speaker of the House, Thom Tillis for his leadership and support of our industry.  It said to be brief, and speak/write clearly.  Make sure to leave your name. address and phone number:

Thom Tillis – Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives

NC House of Representatives, 16 W Jones St. Room 2304, Raleigh, NC 27601, 919.733.3451, Thom.Tillis@ncleg.net

The Hollywood Reporter: 1,000-Plus Protest Bill Targeting North Carolina’s Movie, TV Tax Breaks

The Star News: Film community rallies against bill that would undercut incentives

That just about does it. View more pictures from the rally here. Tomorrow, I go back to the airwaves with the live version of this blog with news of yet more films coming to the Port City.  “What’s Up In Wilmywood” airs Monday-Friday 8:30am on Sunny 104.5.

**UPDATE** I spoke with Carey Jones, Vice Chair of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission this morning on the air about Bill H994 and the Rally.  Here’s what she had to say: LISTEN NOW

Remember the great press release that sang praises for the first quarter of this year due to the film industry boom in NC?  Let me refresh your memory:

“As the first quarter of 2013 comes to an end, the North Carolina Film Office (NCFO) continues to see record-breaking numbers for the state’s film industry.  Over 20 productions have indicated they intend to film, or have already begun filming, in North Carolina, with a total direct in-state spend in excess of $138 million while creating more than 13,000 job opportunities, including 2,100 well-paying crew positions for the state’s highly skilled film professionals.”

With the reminder being put in place, an unsettling panic from every branch of the film industry has spread across the state as a bill is being introduced by our “representatives” of North Carolina.

This reminded me of another article in the Star News that came out just before Azalea Festival.  If you remember there was a little talk with completely skewed low numbers coming out of some of the General Assemblies’ mouths.  Billy Saffo was outraged by their comments.  After I read it, I sure as hell wanted to slap somebody.  But I thought, wow, they’re ignorant, and shook my head because they was no way anyone could take them seriously…Was I wrong?

State Reps, Rick Catlin and Chris Millis and (along with others) have submitted the first draft of what many are calling a JOB KILLER BILL, H994.

So, what is all this mess about?  From what I understand, the intent of this bill is to repeal the cash rebate and replace it with a tax credit.  And they want it retro to January 2013.  I can’t imagine CBS, Warner Brothers, and NBC being okay with that.  I believe that is called breach of contract.   We all can conclude, however, if this did happen and the filming well went dry, as many think it would, how long would it take to get things back the way they are now?  It took, what, 6 years to get the 25% tax incentive in the first place..

Last year, productions spent over $376 million in North Carolina and created more than 4,100 well-paying crew positions and nearly 20,000 job opportunities.  So, the question is would North Carolina like to have 75% of $376 million or nothing at all?  Again, let me remind you, this year alone the film industry has already spent “$138 million while creating more than 13,000 job opportunities, including 2,100 well-paying crew positions for the state’s highly skilled film professionals.”

But it not only affects the thousands of people hired for each film, but it will have a major impact on the vendors as well i.e. hotels, local mom n pop shops, lumber, paint stores, restaurants, tourism.  The list goes on and on.  The productions spend the money where we need the money to go.

The media picked up on this ire from the film industry quickly.   Star News’ Cassie Foss jumped right on it: Local film leaders say bill would end N.C. film industry.   Kudos to our Mayor to continue the support.  Julian March posted this WATCHDOG ARTICLE today.

So what can you do?

1) JOIN THE RALLY!  Filmmakers, Actors, Set Dressers, fans of the film industry, YOU, all of you, are invited to attend a rally!

Saturday, April 20th – Riverfront Park (Market Street and Water) – 1:45pm.

The Facebook invite says: “Bring your family, call your co-workers, reach out to your vendors, invite your neighbors, make sure your friends that work as extras are are aware. Contact your DGA friends, make sure the Teamsters and their families are aware. This bill is designed to end the film industry in NC. It is up to all of us to change the course.”

Here’s another link from the Wilmington Regional Film Commission urging you to attend the rally.

2) SIGN THE PETITON – I am sure it will get signatures, dunno if we can get 100,000 but I like to be optimistic.

3) WRITE YOUR REPRESENTATIVEYep, the tried and true method, let them hear from you.  Especially the vendors I mentioned above.  You need to let your voice be heard if you would like to keep what we have.

Bill H994 is only a first draft, so no need to panic, but I can certainly understand it.  Let’s hope it ends up on the cutting room floor.

Lemme know your thoughts, and if I understand everything correctly.  If not, lemme know.  School me and the rest of NC.  Everyone needs to know. Post your comments below or email me: sheila@1045sunnyfm.com
