THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/18/2013 – Variety Helps Spread the Message, Hank and Jed, PCAs and more…

Howdy and Happy Hump Day! Yesterday was a fun-filled crazy day for film blogging. Not, one, not two, but three were posted as so much was going on.  I will recap and add some goodies this morning!

Yesterday on the Wilmywood Daily Facebook page, I deemed these folks as the Best NC Film Family ever! Hilarious! This Raleigh, NC Family has got more than 6 million views since last week! If you haven’t seen this video yet, you will LOVE it!

ncFLAGThe Governor’s office sent out a press release yesterday.  Film and Television Production spent at least $254 Million in North Carolina this year. That’s direct in state spending folks!  It’s been one the most successful years in NC Film history. The release stated that production companies generated more than 4,000 “well-paying” crew positions and nearly 25,000 job opportunities, including talent and background extra positions. There were more than 5,700 production days in more than 30 counties this year. READ PRESS RELEASE NOW

keepncA lot of people read this press release and liked what was included, but many were more intrigued about what was not included:  the reason for such high direct in state spending. The 25% film incentive.  An interesting omission, indeed.  Perhaps they thought is was a given?   The economic impact numbers help make our case that the incentives should not end on Jan. 1, 2015.  Regardless, we will continue the push until the big vote in May.

Ted-Johnson-VarietyI wanted to thank Ted Johnson, the senior editor for Variety for bringing this message to Hollywood.  Did you know that some people in LA think that our incentives don’t even exist anymore?  Crazy.  Production Companies and studios need to know that North Carolina is still very much a viable option.  So, thanks Ted, I think this article will be a big help.  READ HIS ARTICLE NOW

Variety also brings us this wonderful news about our NC shot  Homeland. The  season finale pulled in its largest audience to date.  READ ARTICLE NOW!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/17/2013 – NC Film Critic’s Choice Nominees, Sleepy Hollow Misnomer, PCA’s and more.

sleepy-hollow1

Goooood Mornin’ Wilmywood!  Let’s kick off the blog this morning with a Sleepy Hollow concern from one of the entertainment bloggers out there in the world.  HW Hill was a little confused about Sleepy Hollow missing an episode, saying, “I guess it didn’t get a full episode order, or it was just meant to be that short.”

No worries, HWHills!  I got your back.  My sources over at Fox set the record straight.

“Fox decided to air them differently.  The Season One order is 13.  It’s always been 13 and they are shooting 13.  We just decided to combine episode 12 and 13 into a 2-hour finale.  In fact, the finale is gonna be epic.  It’s gonna be huge.”

Episode 11 will air January 13th, 2014, 9pm EST and the big finale (Episode 12/13 combo) will air Monday, January 20th beginning at 8pm EST on Fox!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/11/2013 Max Steel Tests For Lead Roles, Times Like Dying, A Holiday Party and more!

Let the testing begin!  We’ve got a few choice actors and actresses fighting for two top notch roles in the upcoming flick, Max Steel, soon to be shot here in Wilmywood.  Of course, the top spot is Max himself.  And as for the female role, The Tracking Board reports it is currently listed as “undisclosed.”

MaxSteel Test

Anyhow, from left to right, here are the contenders ladies and gentleman!  (“Prisoners”, “Lost”),   (“Necessary Roughness”), and Noah Silver (“The Borgias”) are testing to play Max. For the undisclosed female role both  (“Parenthood”, “Ironside”) and  (“The Nine Lives of Chloe King”, “The Gates”) are in the running.  Who do you think will be heading to Wilmywood?

An Indiegogo campaign had begun for the short film Times Like Dying.  Lemme just say, they had me at Evan Vetter, who is in my personal top 5 favorite filmmakers in Wilmington.  Of course he’s is teaming up with some other very loved filmmakers as well: Shon Blotzer, Anthony Reynolds and Parrish Stikeleather.  You’re money will be very well spent with these guys involved.  So, spot them a 5 or so.  You will be glad you did! Times Like Dying is a 20-minute narrative short film set in the Post-Civil War South involving a man named Percy Dixon and his brothers who are stuck with no good options. They are facing the loss of their family farm and backed into a corner. They decide the only way to save their livelihood is to rob a bank. After the robbery, the Dixon clan become separated, but rendezvous at a small farm where they have a chance encounter with a lawman who has seen better days. Over the course of the night, the truth of their actions is discovered. Loyalties are tested. Hostages are taken. Surviving the night begins to outweigh saving the farm. tscc3 E_EtcThe Eclectic Etc. is having their Grand Opening/Holiday Party this Saturday night from 6:00pm-9:00pm. THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 12/10/2013 Sleepy Hollow Film Crew plays Secret Santa for Wilmington Families and more!

SG10Major rumors are swirling about the NC Film Crew. Apparently, they deserve kudos and candy canes.  The  locations department of Sleepy Hollow decided to give back this year to complete strangers.  They took donations from the hundreds of crew members working on Sleepy Hollow, every department, and together they raised $1000!  They headed to Toys R Us and played Secret Santa,  secretly paying off 18 layaway plans at the toy store.  I called the production office for confirmation. As an added bonus, the store manager informed one of the crew members that Toys R Us is also going to make a matching donation to Toys For Tots! Now if that doesn’t inspire you to pay it forward, dunno what will!

The ratings for last night’s episode of Sleepy Hollow will come out later today – I will give you the full report in a separate blog on how The Golem performed.  The Sleepyheads are running two units, both filming on the lot today.

UTD_DVDCutie Pie, Hunter, with Wilm on Film, released the Under the Dome dates.  Looks like they will open offices on January and production will begin in March. And for the record, give some kudos to Hunter.  He is a lot like me, underpaid, an army of one and collecting a lot of great production news. Ha! You go boy!

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 11/20/2013 Fincannons win Artios, Pieces of Talent, Sleepy Hollow location revealed

Atkinson (NC) High SchoolGood Morning Peeps!  Let’s kick it off with a Scribble to the Scribe!

QUESTION: WE are trying to figure out what building is being shown as the Tarrytown Mental Hospital where Abbie’s sister is?  It is driving us nuts. Looks like old Topsail High School, but we’re not sure. Didn’t know who else to ask!  Thanks, from the folks at Wilmington and Beaches CVB

ANSWER: Great question and a popular one.  The exterior of the old Atkinson High School has been transformed into the Tarrytown Mental Hospital. It is located in Atkinson, NC.  As for the interior, some of the interior is the old school, some is a set on stage like Jenny’s room, and some is the old Brunswick hospital.  On a historical note, the school was used from 1924-1975 as a high school and then finally a middle school. Today, the building is used  for  auctions each second Saturday; and rented out for special occasions and  movie production.

PiecesMore congratulations for our local boy Joe Stauffer’s Pieces of Talent.  The Horror now has a total of 17 awards. The film’s most recent win was at the New York City Horror Film Festival where they took home:
Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography (all Joe Stauffer), and Best Actress ( Barbara Weetman )

Check out the Full Award List NOW!   The film stars  David Long, Kristi Ray, Barbara Weetman, Nate Panning, Jon Stafford and Taylor Kowalski.

MORE ABOUT PIECES OF TALENT:
Charlotte (Kristi Ray) is an aspiring actress struggling to find her big break, but until she does, she can look forward to a future of waitressing and living with her pushy mother. Between being harassed at work and pestered at home, salvation seems farther and farther away – until she meets David (David Long). Rescuing David from an aggressive bouncer, Charlotte finds out her new friend makes movies for a living, and she immediately forms a connection with him. David of course takes kindly to the pretty woman’s newfound friendship, and decides he’d love to work with Charlotte on his next project. Charlotte has no idea what kind of filmmaker David is though, as we find out that starring in David’s movie can really be a career killer – zing!  Pieces of Talent is now available for pre-order on DVD.

keepncThe state has been doing an independent impact study on how the film industry affects our economy here in North Carolina.  It began in September and should be done next week.  But results may not be out for another month or two.  I will keep you posted.

KeepNCFilm.org is asking you to make a 2 minute or less video about what it would mean to you if we lost NC Film and send them to your legislators.  They need everyone, cast, crew, vendors and small businesses who are affected by the industry.

“The industry has been good for small biz in NC. We can say to a studio: we have all that here. We don’t need to ship it.”~Dale Williams, UPM

“These incentives are absolutely crucial. If the incentives are not extended the way that they are presently, it will absolutely destroy the industry here,” said Rosin. “Without the incentive, you will be uprooting the lives of a lot of people.”  ~Jason Rosin, IATSE Local 491

“I dare anyone to find better film crews than in Wilmington and North Carolina” ~Exec. VP Screen Gems Studio, Bill Vassar

“We have a legislation sunset in a few months, creating uncertainty-producers want to see is the sunset go away.  Films and shows that are being planned 18 and 24 months out are not looking at North Carolina because they don’t know what is going to happen 18 months from now.”” ~Dale Williams, UPM

Just another day on Sleepy Hollow: One unit just left the Battleship NC completing episode 9 just as another unit arrived to start their day filming episode 10.  Two units are filming today, one in Burgaw and the other on the lot at Stage 10.

OJA lot of people wonder if Captain Irving is good or evil.  I think we change our minds about him episodically.  Perhaps we should just ask the man who plays him, Orlando Jones.

“If you asking my mother, I am totally good.  If you ask my wife, I am completely evil.”  Check out what we can expect this Monday as we travel “Into Darkness.”
