DOR releases their report for 2014 direct film spending in NC.

The Department of Revenue released their report for direct spending. Productions spent $241,372,169 in North Carolina on goods, supplies, wages and employee benefits in 2014, receiving $60,343,039 (25%) in rebates.

Just a quick clarification from the NC Film Office: the numbers released by the NCDOR reflect what productions SUBMITTED on their required forms–which they can file at any time the production is ready– and does not necessarily mean that is what was spent or jobs created that specific year. For example, the NCDOR report does not have the full season of “Secrets and Lies” and its “Sleepy Hollow” numbers are for a previous year (not 2014’s S2); thus the total number is not ALL of what was spent in 2014. There are also productions listed that filmed prior to 2014, like “Well Wishes” and “Los Jets.”

Now, that being said, taking the top spot was who we expected. Sleepy Hollow spent a hefty $43,648,743. The Fox production also took the top spot when it comes to hires. Sleepy Hollow employed 1593 folks (Season One).

Our CBS show, Under the Dome spent $35,158,244 and employed 500.

The Cinemax series Banshee brought us $35,051,297. (no employment # listed)

Homeland was not far behind, spending $31,029,540. (no employment # listed) Submitted from 2013.

Other productions of note include The Longest Ride which spent $23,345,745 and hired close to 600 people. Another big job giver was the family film Max which hits theaters in July.  They spent $18,630,757 and employed 1082 people.

Further breaking down the report, productions spent $136 million in New Hanover County and just over $95 million in Mecklenberg County.

In total, $241,372,169 was spent in North Carolina by film and TV productions last year with 8381 jobs created. Check out the links below to see what’s film has spent in North Carolina over the last 9 years.

THE WILMYWOOD DAILY – 09/25/2014 Banshee, Homeland, Under the Dome, South of Hell, Paper Towns

Howdy!  As you can tell, I have not been posting everyday.  Why?  Well, with the NC film incentives coming to an end in December, there are no new productions that are making announcements, no new offices setting up.  It is simply bone dry.  So, yes, NC Film obviously affects my little small business I call a blog.  I do have some tidbits to share however. So, let’s get right to it.

Sadly this week, Banshee (pictured above) and Homeland in Charlotte are tearing down their sets down and relocating them to other states due to the film incentives expiring at the end of the year. Banshee will relocate to Louisiana while Homeland won’t return to Charlotte next season. The location for Homeland is yet to be determined.

Thank God, Producer Marty Bowen (who was just here for The Longest Ride) has returned to Charlotte to set up offices for one of the last films to come to North Carolina this year. It’s called Paper Towns and stars Nat Wolff.  Nan Morales has been named Line Producer. Production begins in November. There is not a an email set up yet, but you can send your crew resume via fax: 855.593.5484.  (Fax?  Who does that anymore?)

Battlecreek decided not to head to North Carolina. They will be filming in Mississippi after all.

Under the Dome extras casting director Vanessa Neimeyer will relocate to South Carolina for the project South of Hell for WEtv. Also headed that way are many of the crew members, office staff and a producer from Under the Dome as well. No word yet on where Under the Dome will be shooting for season 3. GET MORE DETAILS NOW

‘The Longest Ride’ star “Rango” passes away.

Rango [PBR]

Earlier this week, the Professional Bull Riders announced that Rango, one of the stars of not just the elite Built Ford Tough Series, but also the Nicholas Sparks movie, The Longest Ride, passed away on Sunday morning. According to PBR, the 7-year-old bovine athlete was admitted to the hospital for intestinal issues and passed away after experiencing heart troubles while receiving treatment.

Rango was owned by four-time PBR Stock Contractor of the Year Jeff Robinson. He said, “I have had several hundred bulls compete at the Built Ford Tough Series level and he was my second-best bull ever. He wasn’t my second favorite bull – no, he was No. 1(a). He meant a lot to me. There is no way he will ever be replaced.” [PBR}

One of the crew members who worked on the project in Winston-Salem, NC was also taken aback by the news. “He was a big deal in that movie, he was written into the script and everything.” Rango was a cast member.  “He even had his own doubles,” the crew member said. Other bulls had a little make-up done to create  his likeness. “It was great working with Rango. The Humane Society was there watching him like a hawk. We enjoyed working with them, too.”  Rango had a majestic way about him and he had 1,000s of fans. “He was probably the most athletic bull in the stable and a lot of crew members grew attached to him. It’s funny because these bulls, they look violent when they are out doing their thing, but when they are in their pens, well, I can’t speak for all of them, but Rango was very kind. And he was very well taken cared for, you could tell.”

Without spoiling the movie for ya, and if you haven’t read the book, let’s just say that Rango and Scott Eastwood’s character share an exciting moment together towards the end.

Rango is set to have his own credit in The Longest Ride which will hits theaters on April 10, 2015.  In the meantime, PBR reports they will conduct a special tribute to Rango during the 2014 Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 22-26 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

One of the more popular bovine athletes on the PBR’s BFTS roster, Rango was a bull that riders were excited to face. A qualified 8-second ride on the 1,500-pound bull often meant a winning score. Rango last bucked on Sept. 6 at the Jack Daniel’s Invitational in Nashville, Tennessee, facing two-time PBR World Champion Silvano Alves in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. The two teamed up for a score of 92.25 points which was enough to not only win the round, but also propel Alves to a second-place finish at the event. It is the second-highest score recorded this year, and was the most-watched video highlight on the PBR’s digital channels last week.

Appearing on the BFTS scene in 2011, Rango bucked off 63 of the 75 riders he faced in his four-year PBR career for a buckoff rate of 84 percent. He challenged many World Champions, including J.B. Mauney (2013), Alves (2012, 2011), Guilherme Marchi (2008) and Mike Lee (2004). His average ride score was 90 points – with the highest being the 92.25 points Alves received just one week ago; it was matched by Marco Eguchi in Albuquerque, New Mexico, earlier this year.

The upcoming film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks best-seller, “The Longest Ride,” which is centered on a fictitious PBR bull rider, also featured Rango. Fans will be able to see Rango in action in the film, which hits theaters on April 10, 2015.

The PBR will conduct a special tribute to Rango during the 2014 Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas on Oct. 22-26 at the Thomas & Mack Center.

“He will definitely be missed; he was just like one of the family,” said Robinson.

Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood get ‘Happy’ for Service Dogs on September 8th.

New ‘Happy’ Video Featuring Humanized Dogs to Debut 9/ 8 .

‘Happy2 – Dog Days’ to Support Nonprofit Providing Service Dogs for People with Disabilities

A press release has just been issued and we can’t wait until Monday!  Happy2 – Dog Days (, a  new video set to the Pharrell Williams song “Happy,” featuring humanized dogs on vacation at Wrightsville Beach, will be released on September 8th.

Two local photographers/videographers, Ned Leary and Will Page, aim to support Canines for Service, an Wilmington-based organization committed to providing service dogs for people with disabilities nationwide.  They are releasing the fun on September 8th.  Here’s a teaser of what’s to come.

According to the press release, the video includes four main dogs and an appearance by a Vietnamese pot bellied pig.  After winning a trip to Wrightsville Beach, the video tracks the dogs as they visit the beach, go to bars, fish and kayak, activities that highlight the unique lifestyle there.

Happy2 – Dog Days also includes guest appearances by Britt Robertson and Scott Eastwood, who were just here for Nicholas Sparks’ The Longest Ride. They filmed their fun scenes at the local favorite Buddy’s Crab Shack and Oyster Bar in Wrightsville Beach.

In the first local Happy  video, Leary and Page filmed local residents as they danced around Wrightsville Beach. Now they decided to do a sequel. They wanted to create something even bigger that included more dancing. After filming  some furry friends for one scene of the new video, the pair decided the entire film needed to be about dogs.

Director Ned Leary decided to kick it up a notch and use the fun to support our local non-profit, Canines for Service.

The filming duo completed the video in six weeks, without any financial backing and all on their own time. Leary, Page and the dogs’ owners/handlers were all previously unknown to one another before filming and include a waitress, a doctor, a premature infant ICU nurse and a Coast Guard instructor.

“Once we decided to shoot the entire video around the idea of dogs visiting Wrightsville Beach, we knew we wanted to highlight the work of a great service dog organization,” Leary said. “Canines for Service does such wonderful work for people with disabilities in the state, and we hope Happy2 – Dog Days will introduce people to the powerful work they do in helping people with disabilities live with greater independence.”

For nearly 20 years, Canines for Service has helped people with disabilities live with greater independence. The organization helps select and train dogs for service.
