An article came out yesterday from the Associated Press about the NC Film Incentives, the pros and cons according to legislators.  They also talked about the HIGHLY anticipated Impact Study that was conducted at the end of last year.  If you are like me, you have been EAGERLY waiting for this.  The good news is that it is done, and already some Wilmington folks have already been briefed on its findings.  It will be released to the public sometime this month. READ STORY NOW

SarahJones__SOCThe Society of Camera Operators paid tribute to Sarah Jones this week in its annual awards ceremony.  Earlier in the week a candlelight vigil took place on Sunset Boulevard with nearly 1,000 supporters in attendance. Sarah’s parents attended both of these events where they accepted a plaque in Sarah’s honor and spoke on her behalf.

sarahjones candleThe tragic death of 27 year old Sarah has sparked a great amount of attention to the importance of on set safety.   The film ‘Midnight Rider‘ has suspended filming since the encounter with a train that injured 7 crew members, including Sleepy Hollow hair stylist, Joyce Gilliard and took the life of Sarah Jones.
A scholarship fund has been set up in Sarah’s name and an address to send donations is included in the full story here.

secretsLiesYay!  The first production day of the season!  ABC’s Secrets & Lies kicks it off in Porter’s Neck.  Wanna know some more secrets?  How about how Producer Aaron Kaplan feels about Wilmington and why he chose to bring it here.  Hunter Ingram of the Star News snagged this fabulous quote:

aaronkaplan“When we were trying to decide where to shoot this, one of the most important things for us was that we had to pick an American city that felt very safe, very bucolic and a place that would be rattled by something like the murder of a child,” Kaplan said.

Aaron says more and he wasn’t the only one that agreed.  Find out who cited our excellent film incentives and crew base to seal the deal. READ MORE NOW

Meanwhile,  the love continues to pour for Sarah Jones, the beautiful camera assistant who died during the train accident.  A Slates for Sarah Facebook page was created and if you haven’t seen it yet, get ready to be moved.  God, I love this industry.  So beautiful and creative.  Yesterday, this page stood at 421 likes when I saw it.  Now it’s over 8500 and growing quickly.  No one will brush over Sarah’s death.  She matters.

This was a beautiful tribute.  Please share it with everyone!
A lot of people are also asking how Joyce Gilliard is doing.  She is the fabulous hair stylist that has worked here in Wilmington often (Sleepy Hollow, The Conjuring).  She was up for tweeting this morning.  She let everyone know how sad she is and just how devasting it was to go through it all.  She also cleared up a few things.
“I was hit by the train and not the debris. The worst day in my life. I will need counseling. My coworker died beside me.”
She said that she has metal and pins holding her arm together.  Lots of love and prayers to Joyce.  She is being released from the hospital today.

Today is the first day of Principal photography for “Times Like Dying.” Jim Cody Williams is in from LA who if you look up on IMDb has worked a ton. He was in “Pirates of the Caribbean 2,” “Dodgeball,” and “Sons of Anarchy among many many more films and TV roles. He was also in the original Pace Picante commercial, where he said the famous line, “New York City?” Time to go play cowboys, boys! Gitty Up!

houseofcards

Delaying HOUSE OF CARDS in Maryland due to their film incentives being up in the air. Sound familiar?

In a letter to Maryland’s Governor Martin O’Malley, which you can read at Deadline, the Senior Vice President of Television Production, Charlie Goldstein, states that while he absolutely loved filming the first two seasons of House of Cards there, because of the incentives being up in the air (vote to come in June), they pushed production until after the vote and they are currently obligated and have already been looking at other states with great incentive packages.  He went onto say, if the incentives don’t continue, they will move the production elsewhere.

If there is any doubt in any legislators minds, read the article, they are not bluffing.  This will happen to us if we lose our film incentives.  Other states will gladly welcome productions with open arms, and we will be left in the dust.  Thousands of jobs gone, million in revenue halted, small businesses damaged and/or shut down.

In the meantime, thank you Dr. Ernie Ward who is running for NC Senate, District 8.  And yes see for yourself.  WHAT DOES ERNIE WARD STAND FOR?tweet_ernie_ward

Scott_KevinIn case you haven’t seen this, Scott Davis did announce  a date for the The Celebration for Cuz.  It will be March 16th, at Hugh Macrae Park from 2 pm to 6 pm. This will be held at  Shelters 5 and 6 with the Volley Ball court between them. This will be a picnic style celebration so please bring food and drink for you and yours. Due to the public park rules, we are having to limit music to a DJ format…. Classic 80s and 90s Rock should be appropriate. There will be a small stage with a microphone set up so that those of you who wish to share something will have an opportunity…..Our family continues to be lifted by your words and gifts…. For those of you who have a schedule conflict, I am sorry. This was the best available. Again I look forward to hugging each and everyone of you….
