Is Film Dead in North Carolina? No. Here’s Why.

I know a lot of people are bummed, devastated, heartbroken (INSERT YOUR FEELINGS HERE). So I thought it would lighten the mood a little bit and give you a few things to think about.

Under the Dome is leaving, yes that is true, however, we are not dead. Film is not dead in North Carolina. It’s not even close to how it was in 2013 or 2014 and who knows if it ever will be, but there are some things we can look forward to.

There are a few possibilities. Since Dirty Dancing never used the $4,000,000 from the NC Film Grant, there are production companies who have already applied. It looks like Wilmington (if all goes well) will hopefully have one if not two pilots. One from TNT and another possibly from NBC. One would have an October start date. That’s all I am saying about that for the moment.

Now, in the next two weeks we will know what kind of numbers are going to come out of the General Assembly. We know at the very least it will be $10M but what we’re hoping for is something above $25M. $40M+ of course is preferable. That will keep some of our crew afloat. Once we get that in play we should have some definite confirmations from productions companies who wish to film here.

I do know that on the western side of the state there is a Danny McBride flick that would also like to film this fall.  That will depend on the NC Film Grant for this fiscal year. It’s titled The Legacy Of A Whitetail Deer Hunter and stars Josh Brolin and Danny McBride.  And can I please give a HUGE thanks to to Jody and Danny for trying to bring everything they can to North Carolina.  I know the crew and vendors are very grateful.

We should know who exactly applied for the grant by the end of next week and how many.

So all hope is not lost. I hope this gives you some peace. I know it’s hard because our film family is being torn apart as people have to relocate to do what they do for a living. But there will be at least some work to look forward to.

Love you guys and gals – stay strong!

Under the Dome Vacates Wilmywood: More details

So, it looks like my sources were once again correct. Although there has been no official words to come out, crew members who work on Under the Dome, commented on social media platforms with sadness, frustration and agreement, not corrections to the story.

Today, I got word that CBS has initiated strike orders for all the sets. I also heard there will be a set dec sale sometime soon, but that it will be small. Most of the show’s belongings will be broken down and shipped out. Under the Dome wraps season 3 this Friday.

Ironically, this was the last official prop purchase for Under the Dome. I do believe I see our NC Film Industry in there.

If you haven’t seen the sets at EUE/Screen Gems Studios, I would HIGHLY recommend you take a studio tour ASAP to see the stages where Under the Dome calls home. The tours run Saturdays and Sundays at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. At least for now.

The only good news I can tell you is that now with Dirty Dancing releasing the $4M in unused grant money, we will be having a pilot or two this fall, but I am holding off on releasing the details at the moment.

FYI: Pilots will only keep folks employed for 3 weeks or so.

I’ll keep you posted!

RUMORS FROM THE LOT: Under the Dome to leave Wilmington for Season 4

We should have read the writing on the wall, or lack there of when the already iconic “Sweetbriar Rose” exterior in Burgaw for Under the Dome returned to its natural form. But because these guys persevered despite the cost and stayed in Wilmington for season 3 – we thought maybe just maybe they would consider staying here one more season.  That’s if there is a season 4.  But we already know there will be.

However, multiple sources have told me that an announcement was made today.  I was told that Executive Producer Peter Leto let folks know that if Under the Dome gets picked up for another season, they will not be returning to Wilmington.

Rumors are swirling about the CBS show heading to Utah for the 4th season, and that this move was spearheaded by Executive Producer Neal Baer. Utah has basically our old film incentive, a 25% rebate.

No official announcement has been made regarding a 4th season yet, nor is this information I am giving you now.  I am just telling you what I am being told.

This is sadly Banshee all over again.

Please feel free to thank our North Carolina General Assembly and Governor Pat McCrory for putting 300+ more people out of work.

I will try to get confirmation on this matter ASAP.  More details to come.

Under the Dome is allowing EUE/Screen Gems to tap another stage for the studio tours this weekend. This Sunday, THREE of the stages used for Under the Dome will be on view. That’s a first for Screen Gems—three stages!

I can’t tell you what’s on the stages because it changes so much from weekend to weekend, but here’s a rundown of what I do know:

When they started the tours this spring, the house from ABC’s Secrets and Lies was part of the tour….now, it’s being transformed into something else….and you may or may not see it this weekend, depending on what happens with shooting today and with weekend construction. But it’s likely you’ll see it as they move forward!

Stage 4 has multiple sets—and they change them all the time for Under the Dome—this will be on view both Saturday and Sunday—THIS IS THE NEW ONE WE HAVE ACCESS TO THIS WEEKEND, both Saturday and Sunday.

Stage 7 is not available to see on Saturday, but you can see it on Sunday. It houses the iconic UTD diner, The Sweetbriar Rose.

Stage 8 is changing constantly….you’ll be able to see how UTD is using it right now on both Saturday and Sunday.

Tours are Saturday and Sunday at 10am, 12pm and 2pm.  GET DETAILS NOW

Under the Dome Ratings and One Word for Season 3

Although the two-hour season three premiere of Under the Dome was down 38% from the season two premiere, they still crushed the competition. Our Wilmywood shot show had nearly double the viewers than the other network rivals. So, we should still be pleased with the numbers. UTD garnered over 6 million viewers.  Not bad for its third time around.

From time to time, I contribute to the Community section of Entertainment Weekly regarding all television productions filmed right here in Wilmywood. Since we haven’t had much to talk about TV wise for months, it was great to be able to write and capture video for this awesome magazine.  My work is online only, but I still get pretty pumped about talking about filming in our awesome city!  So, whether you have seen the premiere of Under the Dome or not, here are the cast members attempting to describe season 3 in one word.  Enjoy!
